  3. Yes, you can do the Faultline arcs (well, only the two for levels 20-24, not the earlier two), just go to FL and talk to Jim Temblor (he won't show on your map or contact list, but he'll talk to you once you click on him) and he'll introduce you to Doc Delilah. Not only I like the story and the enemies in this arc, but it's a nice one to do to be "Entrusted with the Secret".

Likewise, you can get started on the Striga arcs if you like them (I haven't done them in a while with all the new stuff to do in this level range, but it's a good one for the Silver Bullet and Slayer badges that you'll need for the Atlas Medallion).

Other than that, you should also consider doing that first Midnighter Arc, if only to unlock access to Cimerora (then again, you have until level 35 to do that). Finishing that arc should also unlock access to Mercedes Sheldon's series of arcs. I personally like those, since they are harder than the usual ones (although since you just came from Praetoria, hard arcs should be nothing new). Then again, I really like the clone arcs (Keith's and Jeni's) too.

Barred all that, radios and a safeguard to get a regular contact is still an option. The problem with the new contacts, cool as their stories are, is that they don't like to sell insps (at least you can buy them in the hospital now) or buy your stuff, so having at least one regular contact is good.

Just for the sake of completeness, at level 20 you can also do Sister Psyche's TF and missions in Bloody Bay and Siren's...

Come level 25 things get better, you can get started on Roy's arc and, best of all (even if you don't like the story, it's good to get magic salvage), the Croatoa arcs, and you should have gotten more regular contacts by then, too.
  4. Ouch, I can't believe I forgot to check for answers to this post for so long! Sorry about it, and if any of you guys who posted see this again, thanks for the enthusiasm. Several people commented on the active/exercise aspect of this and indeed it is an important aspect, although I also like how it seems lots of fun, too (at least for short stretches).

As for letting people play with it, so far I'm not really allowed too. Mostly because it's not in tip top shape yet (there are a few bugs left, and one very annoying restriction: for now you have to be wearing long sleeves for the recognition to work right, and that sucks), so we'd rather not put it out there and get a bunch of people disappointed. Still working on it though (not as intensely as I was last year, new projects came up, but still working), and once it's ready, it will be available, free and open-source. I'll let you guys know when.
  5. My first character was Dr.Gamma, my Rad/Rad Defender on Freedom. I picked the server simply because it was first on the list then and poor Dr.Gamma suffered incredibly due to my many newb mistakes (at least I played mostly solo, so my mistakes didn't cause any suffering to others):

    - One thing I remember is that it took me ages to place ANY slots in my first blasts (SOLOING, and I actually completed the Faultline arcs before doing it), because I had read in some guide that I would mostly only use my debuffs, AoEs and CB after I got all of that (not true then, especially solo, but curiously a little bit more true now that I team a lot with him). Having come from a really grindy MMO before CoH, doing unslotted defender damage (not even sonic blast and before the new vigilance) did NOT feel slow at all for me back then!!! I pity people I know who STILL play that grindy thing... Still regarding powers, I thought EMP crashed my end (not only my recovery) and only ended up grabbing that amazing power at 38, after people in the forums set me straight.

    - It was playing him that I learned where everything was. Exploring and getting badges with a low level squishy with no stealth and SJ (not fly!) for a travel power. I remember how scared, and soon kissing the floor, I was the first time I saw Supa Trolls while looking for what to do after my first contact had no more missions. I got sniped to death in Founders (and, much later, by the ****ed Pylon 17 in the RWZ). For a long time I thought Giant Monsters liked sniping me randomly while I traveled through the zones, due to the huge amount of damage I sometimes took in places I had outleveled... Until I figured out it was just ambush mobs 10 levels above me left unattended! And to this day I ALWAYS kill my outdoor ambushes (unless they get lost, and NO, that does not include that Malta Titan GM).

    - Took me forever to learn how to use inspirations with him. For most content, his powerful debuffs and the small but quick heal were more than enough to survive even before I got the tasty CB stun, so when faced with a more-annoying-than-usual boss, multiple bosses, or especially AVs (toned down to EBs) with PToD, huge debuff resistance and tons of mez and damage, it was painful. By this and what I said above about exploring, I'm sure you guess I quickly got lots of debt badges (and then rarely died with the characters that came after, including squishies). I DID learn about anchors, herding (which I don't use anymore, but was handy when I played my first tank later) mobs into my debuffs from behind corners, pulling, and about every single enemy who had any mez (that was before toggle supression, when it all dropped). With him, I NEVER learned about hard-to-hit mobs (such as Rikti Drones, veng'ed Nemesis or CoT demons with dark attacks and auras) because of all the def debuff he put out.

    - I failed my first two bank missions with him (had NO idea what I was doing in the first one and got stunned and defeated with a kick in the face in the second one - see about not knowing how to use insps properly), so for a long time I avoided bank missions with any squishies and instead went for the [old] hollows arcs. Without the flight pack. Then I started loving doing bank missions with every character. Nowadays, not so much anymore: I only do the first one, hero-side, for the pack. Redside I love mayhem missions, though, and always have.

And I still play and enjoy him lots today (although he had been mostly retired for years before the incarnate stuff came out), mostly in teams but still having a blast soloing with him now and then. I have done all the high level TFs with him (except for Tin Mage, need to find a team for that), love using him to take down EB-watered-down-AVs or to help with real AVs (never really felt like trying to solo those, though, with any characters) and he was my first character to get the Very Rare Alpha slotted, even though he is probably not my most powerful (as in damaging and very tough) character solo (but he's probably up there among them), with his cheap but quite effective IO build. He's also my character who did (and allowed me to read) most content, since I played him before xp smoothing, the debt nerfs and patrol xp. I fought -everything- hero-side with him. I loved to fight mez-heavy DE and Freaks and to bust up Redcaps while in my 20s and 30s, and in my 40s I fought KoA, Malta (damned Sapper ambushes), Carnies (I only noticed much later that they drained when dying), Vanguard (never figured what the big deal about them was... until I went at 'em with a Scrapper) and everything else. I was surprised by how wimpy my hated CoT turned in the high levels.

My other 50 I've been investing most of my incarnate time on is my Crab (though having her in Champion, and having soloed almost exclusively until recently, makes it considerably harder to find teams for the higher level TFs there), made years later. Second character I ever made was my Fire/Fire Tanker, also on Freedom, who is a powerhouse but only hit 50 recently (after the FA buffs, yay!), after a bunch of others.

I never deleted any of the multitude of characters I've made (that's why I'm spread around 4 servers).
  6. What about villain ATs (if we can still call them that after Praetoria)?

Brutes and Stalkers are still in the thick of melee, aren't squishy (despite what stalker detractors might claim) and play different from tanks and scrappers, to add variety. Brutes have Shields, that people are crazy about.

Dominators are fun too, like a blapper/blaster/controller combo, and with all the control in their hands, they don't feel all that squishy either (and later you can always grab a defense armor and work on that)...

Glad it helped, then, and I hope you enjoy your choice! Do tell us if you do or don't, and beware of the squishiness of the low levels!

About DM... I forgot to mention earlier that, while it IS rarely resisted, some mobs do resist it A LOT. The most annoying that comes to mind are Banished Pantheon zombies, that have 50% resist to it (it's a pain) - but at least they're only minions. CoT spectral demons (including the annoying lt.) have 30%, but that never bugged me that much (they resist smash/lethal even worse). I don't think either is involved in any badges though (you only need to assassinate Spirit Masks for Banisher...)

And the reason I mentioned AoE was because of those boring badges like... the thousand rikti monkey ones and all those 333 croatoan critter badges come to mind. But I got some of those with my ST guys, often without actually trying for it (apparently, I have a deep subconscious hatred of redcaps, I always end up slaughtering hordes of them), so it shouldn't be too bad.
  8. So, about those candidates you had thought of (do you want to build with invention sets for this character, by the way?):

X/Nin Stalker, probably an exotic damage stalker I know would both be capable of stealthing missions, easy to push to soft cap with only 1 purple insp, and stalkers are perfect boss killers... right? Honestly I've never leveled a stalker past 12, I hardly ever see them, and the new buff only works on teams. Is Assassins Strike better for taking down bosses than scrappers with a higher survivability and raised crit chance?

I enjoy blasters and know they can do the damage to kill bosses best, but the rest of the spawn can be troublesome, and dying means waiting and waiting is lame.

I'd like it to kill quickly too, I know ill/rads are some of the best soloists out there, and tanks don't die, but they are SLOW... for the most part, if you know any highly damaging combo of another AT that fits the bill, I'm interested. I hear some good things about doms, and I know nothing of VEAT'S, so. All ears.
About the scrappers... I've played a lot with Claws and Spines (both are great and bring lots of AoE and even range, which almost feels unfair in a scrapper, but they can be slooow against robots), DM (great ST exotic damage and a small but constant heal) and FM (no mitigation but nice damage). I've also helped with and watched my brother's MA scrapper and was VERY impressed with it. Crazy ST damage, mitigation in the form of stuns that quickly stack to neuter a boss (he skipped the big KB though), a single AoE that isn't bad damage (and can later be complimented by something like epic fireball) and is great mitigation with KD.

Not sure about Regen though... My Claws/Regen hit 50 without any headaches, all right, but she was probably my melee character that died the most on the way there, when I wasn't quick enough with strategic use of her KD/KB powers and regen clicks. Willpower also has extra endurance and is much more survivable (at least if you're not at the top of your game, or if there's network or server lag), to the point it might feel TOO easy. SR has no extra end, but is very survivable as well, easy to softcap even with minimal investment and has that tasty +rech/+speed (it's also much less tight a build now, with inherent fitness). Pairing that with DM for the heal (the to hit debuff is overkill in this case, but helps in the lower levels) is great, too. Elec has end stuff AND +rech/+speed, but can feel squishier without much investment... Fire is squishier but does insane damage nowadays and also comes with a handy (no longer crappy) end recovery tool. I like the other armors too, but they do tend to hog end...

Stalkers are indeed great at stealthing and assasinating bosses, and nin is one of the best armors for them (plus it's fun: unique and full of utility). DM adds survivability and does mad ST damage, most of it NE and some smashing (MA theoretically does more damage, but it's all smashing, so I get the feeling DM ends up ahead - midnight grasp alone is a beauty, a critical from it almost feels like a much quicker and only slightly less powerful AS, especially right after an AS and placate, poor bosses). DM and MA suck at AoE damage though. Apparently, an Elec stalker does ok ST damage (thanks to AS) and very good AoE, and it's energy... Because of the Stalker's burst damage style, you don't feel the end going away as much, unless you start to scrap a lot.

Blasters are pretty easy to softcap to ranged nowadays if you go for IOs and it's not even expensive (not like, say, a Permadom or other mad recharge builds). That makes them really tough and you can go for the no mitigation, crazy ST and AoE fire damage. If you don't want IO sets though, Energy/ Blasters do a ton of mitigation with KB, are fast and have a nice mix of ST and AoE, and Ice/ comes with decent control. Pair that with hover and something like /Mental or /devices (which is not bad at all solo) or maybe /ice, avoid too much melee and you really shouldn't die much. Purples are your friends against EBs, but I never really had to use them against bosses with my blasters (even mezing bosses, after the change that let me keep hovering and the new defiance letting me attack and knock them on their behinds even while I was mezed).

Doms (especially Perma) look real good to me, too, but I don't have much experience with them, sadly. And my VEAT is great, but being a Crab, she's more of an AoE death machine (and very team/pet friendly) than a ST specialist for taking down bosses fast. Widows and Banes, aside from their great team buffs, won't really pull ahead of scrappers or stalkers solo... Fortunatas I got no idea, honestly, they look dominator-ish to me, but that's it.

As for Tankers doing low damage... That depends. If I decide to use both BU and FE, my Fire/Fire can take a boss down about as fast as any of my scrappers or stalkers (actually faster against certain enemies). Using only one of those, he's only a bit slower, but he ALSO does very good AoE damage (New Burn is a thing of beauty). Things melt FAST and he feels pretty tough - and when he doesn't, he has a great self-heal, and even a self-rez (that I don't think I have ever used yet). Shields/ and /DM have good tools to increase a tanker's damage, as does /SS if you don't hate the crash like I do (despite having the vet attacks to use during it).

And Ill/Rads don't kill that slowly (guess it depends on what you call slow), with PA and Phantasm beating on a poor guy debuffed to the gills, plus containment for your attacks (which are not so puny once you get to the epic pools). Fire Control and Kinetics are other decent sources of damage for controllers... That said, I don't think I'd pick a controller for a badger unless I really loved them, and since you said you get bored with MMs, you probably won't love controllers all that much...

    Quote:
Super Strength / Willpower Brute with Fly.
Fly is indeed nice for badging, but jet packs are so plentiful and cheap nowadays that if you'd rather have another travel power, you can still easily reach any of the badges hiding high up there. Brutes are indeed dependant on Fury (without it they do less damage than tanks), and on being attacked by a bunch of things to get it, not just attacking like a... brute. It's a bit easier to get decent fury nowadays and it goes down slower, but it's harder than before to get and keep the fury bar full. SS/ shines on Brutes with the high damage cap and reduces the need for fury a bit (but it still has the annoying crash). Willpower is, indeed, Willpower. (The only thing it's not great at is keeping aggro, or single really hard hitters with certain types of damage, I guess).

So... Huge post and I didn't really help you pick anything... But I guess the lesson here is you can pretty much pick something you like and that feels fun and there are powersets and builds in every AT that can make your badging easier. Maybe there is a difference in performance between a softcapped hovering Fire, Ice or Energy blaster, a Fire or DM/WP or Regen Scrapper, a /Fire Tanker or a /Nin stalker, but I doubt they're significant enough to make that much of a difference, even when you're hunting hundreds of specific things. The Stalker's stealth is an advantage in this case I guess (and I -love- how they play, even if they are squishy early on), but it's easily mimicked with a +Stealth IO and some other stealth power (like Super Speed, Cloaking Device or good ole Stealth)... As Chad said, go with what you will want to play.

Anyway... I hope this helps more than it confuses... Gah. Must be less verbose.

  13. I'm kinda trying to keep my hopes up, but I'm pretty sure this is yet another cool pack I won't be able to buy in Brazil. We're blocked from that part of the NC Store and the stupid Brazilian distributor won't update their website to include the new stuff! Last one I got to buy was the Cyborg pack. I can't figure WHY they do that, it't not like they have to pay for shipping or anything...

Off-topic: I can't even buy game time in the NC Store with neither international credit card nor pay pal, so I'm forced to buy them piecemeal every two months and apply the time manually (and they're overpriced, to add insult to injury). Have to be real careful with stuff like the Vanguard Pack, so I don't slip for a day and end up loosing it.

    Sorry for the whinning...
  14. Glad I saw this thread in the digest, I was about to defrag my hard disk because of this.

I'll send the info in-game as soon as possible, but I'll throw it in here too, for now (here go my poor computer specs):
    • Zone: as others have said, this happens when first loading the game, not zones or missions.
    • Started: After wednesday's hot-fix (I'm almost sure). On tuesday I was online not long after the I19.5 patch and don't really recall seeing this problem, before doing my STF. Then the next day, after the hot fix, I noticed it clearly.

  16. Personally, I prefer Fiery Melee to SS, mostly because I -hate- the rage crash with a passion (especially when solo, which is where I spend most of my time), but also because I always prefer dealing fire damage instead of smashing...

I'm also not a huge fan of the brute GOGOGO playstyle, even though I know a lot of people love it... Most primarily ranged and solo players I've seen (as I tend to think of myself and the OP indicates they might be too) tend to prefer a slightly more relaxed pace (actually, it's more like being cautious when being so squishy and alone) than what you feel compelled to do as a brute, especially when solo, where fury is harder to build and maintain (but still not so bad as it was before). As a consequence, my brutes remain at low level, while my tankers and scrappers thrive. I actually push forward hard and fast with the killing with all my character, including the squishies... I just don't like feeling FORCED to do that, or punished if I don't, and that's how fury feels to me. Very personal, I know, but I thought it was pertinent.

I'm currently working on a Fire/SD Scrapper (among other projects), and he's at level 36 or so, so I guess I can give you my impressions:

    - His damage output is indeed sick! Very satisfying.

    - He feels somewhat squishier than my other scrappers (including Dark and even Regen!, plus Willpower - I also have a invul scrapper, but he hasn't even reached SOs yet, so it's hard to compare). I haven't soft-capped his defenses yet (melee is around 40%, the rest is lower) and he has low DDR, his resists are not so great even with tough, and he has no self-heal (well, heal self, but that's interruptible), not even a healing attack as in Dark Melee nor any mitigation in the form of KD/KB or mez as in other melee primary sets (SS is better than Fire in this department). Willpower has no self-heal either, but the mad amounts of regen make it pretty much easy-mode regarding survival. I figure it will get much better when I'm soft-capped to everything, though.

    - To reach the softcap to all positions as a scrapper (without spending too much), I ended up sacrificing some accuracy (including bonuses), end-mod and recharge on his single target attacks. A Kismet +6% to hit I got cheap helped a lot with the accuracy (and we do have a power who gets zero benefits when soloing from any enhancements, so it's the perfect place for that), and the hole in my ST attack chain is usually filled with the AoEs obliterating everything around the bosses (who also tend to die fast), so it's not too annoying most of the time, but it gets a little annoying with tougher targets. Endurance consumption I have to monitor closely sometimes (but that's nothing new to me, and I'm to cheap to buy the uniques that improve end recovery, even though I have the money)... I think I'll end up going cardiac with him, and trusting team buffs to help with my accuracy when fighting those +4s (pre level shift) that pop up in some of the high end content. I sometimes wonder if I shouldn't have gone as a tanker with him to get to the softcap with a more flexible build, despite the considerably lower damage...

He's still a ton of fun to play! So, to sum up, I would recommend a scrapper if you don't mind working a bit harder to get softcapped (or don't care much about being a bit squishier than other melee types) and like the sick damage, or a tanker if you wanna be tough as nails and do a bit less damage (but still above what many other tankers can put out). And I'd recommend Fire over SS unless you don't mind the rage crash. If you go SS, the mitigation from that would also make you feel more durable...
  17. I can't believe I missed this (didn't hear about it until now). I live 10 minutes from there and was at City of Knowledge just last month talking to Gilson. Gah.

By the way, are you related?
  18. I'm one of the people who, despite staying quiet in the forums most of the time, liked most of the things you did in the game (or that were attributed to you anyway) and often spoke with enthusiasm about them to my RL friends. So I, too, am sad to see you go and hope you embark in even greater and fun projects in your future. I'll miss your (and BAB's) more technical comments in the forums most of all, about how things work under the hood.

I didn't read the entire thread, so I'm not sure someone asked about this already (except for, in a way, TonyV), but when you know and are allowed to talk about it, would you let us know what else you'll be working on? Say, via some tweet or something...

Yeah, you could do that. I was specifically answering to the "Grab gun or patron AoE INSTEAD of the crab AoEs" thing someone had said before, but you can always grab them all. I find that having that much AoE, though, doesn't really help me that much unless I'm fighting +4 enemies (which I don't like to do solo, and in groups I have more people to help with the AoE carnage). +1, +2 and +3 minions are dying pretty fast with just 3 or 4 AoEs (plus stacked assault and some damage bonuses) and pets and single target attacks take care of anything tougher much more efficiently. So I prefered to grab less AoE attacks (that frees lots of slots, too) and go for being tougher and having double assault and maneuvers.

I was a little surprised by this (not the faster animations, I do know how painful it is with supression) and went to check it out.

Venom Grenade animation is exactly the same for the gun and crab versions: 1.67s. In this case, it's better to pick the crab version, since the gun might cause redraw, unless you do grab a bunch of other gun attacks.

Bile Spray is, of course, a winner, but more because of the -40% toxic resist in VG than because of its (also long) animation time of 2.67s. I didn't check the AoEs in other patron pools because I doubt they'll make up for the toxic thing.

Regarding Arctic Breath versus Supression though, to me Supression seems to come out on top. While its animation is indeed slower (3s versus 2.67s for AB - not considering Arcana Time), it does a bit more damage, so the DPA is nearly identical: 20.67 for Supression, 20.97 for AB, unenhanced at level 50. That .3 difference in DPA, though, is more than made up by Supression's arc of 60 degrees, which is twice as wide as AB's 30 degrees. I also think Supression looks much cooler, but that's besides the point.

Heavy Burst is faster (unless it comes with redraw) and actually has considerably better DPA than Supression: 2.67s activation and 22.85 DPA, about 10% better than Supression. It's all Lethal Damage though, very resisted, so I -still- prefer Supression's energy damage most of the time. HB's arc is also half of supression's, only 30 degrees.

Frag Grenade has the best DPA by far, with 1.67s activation and 38.92 DPA, it's pretty impressive compared to the others. Even factoring redraw and damage type in, it would still come out far ahead. It mixes in some smashing damage, too, which is not as badly resisted as lethal. It has KB, but WAWG counters that. It's 10 feet radius - half of VG's and as small as WAWG - is a little disappointing. I seem to always hit more targets with my arcs. But I'll agree passing up Frag Grenade is a debatable choice.

So, the only clear winners in the Crab AoE choices are Bile Spray (with VG) and Frag Grenade (even with the small radius and KB). Supression is better than Arctic Breath (nearly identical damage, twice the arc) and trades 10% DPA for a less resisted damage type, twice the arc and no redraw when compared to Heavy Burst.

I didn't mention Omega Maneuver because, while I love it to bits, I think it's more of a fun factor thing... Right now my AoE chain is VG->BS->Supression and I should probably drop OM and grab FG for even more AoE carnage, but I like OM and feel the AoE is fine as it is.

  23. Thanks guys. I'll try the older Mids first, sentinel if that doesn't work (with the gesture and movie capture thing, I often already have too much stuff running along with CoH).
  24. Is there some place where we could get older versions of Mid's (that work)? I noticed a few of my older builds are not opening in the latest version (but I have not tried opening those for a while, so it could be an older problem) and I'd like to try different versions, find one that lets me open those builds and export them so I can import them in the newest version...
