Correct. In the wee hours of the morning (US time) Justice jumps up to 3rd place, and I've seen it in second a few times.

As far as the OP's question is concerned, I'm not going anywhere. I like Pinnacle too much to leave. I did move some of my seldom played characters that I didn't have the heart to delete to Virtue though.

I did that mostly to clear up some space on Pinnacle, since I just recently got my first villain 50 and wanted space for 3 VEATS, Widow, Bane, and Crab. The Widow I can use dual builds for to try both sides, but the Bane and Crab I wanted to be separate characters.

I'm also a horrible altoholic and the ability to move for free instead of deleting was greatly appreciated.

Not even taking Thunder Strike with him, I prefer the 1-2 of Charged Brawl/Havoc Punch. I'm also considering putting the Fortunata Hypnosis: Chance for Placate in Charged Brawl.

Still debating on whether I want Lightning Field or not. If I DO take it, it will be slotted for end drain instead of damage to help sap things after a Power Sink.

I should be able to attain enough mitigation to stay in melee pretty much all the time without too many worries. Mez will suck, but it always does for a blaster, so I'll make sure I have some breakfrees and keep an eye out for mezzers. If it's frozen it won't be mezzing you.

This is probably part of your problem. For some reason ATI cards and CoH don't get along well. No one is entirely sure why...well, at least no one that I've talked to is.

I heartily recommend something from nVidia.

In general this is more noticeable on Tankers than Scrappers but in general SD characters are a bit like eggshells, good structural integrity but when it fails they crumble completely.

If you really want to, you can hit 20-25% resistance to everything but Psi on a Shield Defense character. Closer to 30% for a tank. With softcapped defenses that isn't too shabby. Add in the fact that AAO also debuffs enemy damage and you have effectively more resistance than would otherwise be apparent.

Shield Defense tanks can hit almost 50% resistance to Smashing and Lethal if you add Tough to the mix.

People often seem to forget that there is resistance built into Deflection and True Grit. You can usually get decent resistance numbers out of them without gimping the power if you slot it right.
  6. On hero side, scrappers are generally the most solo friendly, and the majority of the powersets involve some kind of weapon.

Claws even has a couple options that are claws strapped to your wrists rather than jutting out of your hands.

Villain side I would second Muon's advice to try a brute.

The only other advice I have is: Don't limit yourself, try everything.

Don't like the idea of a character that throws fire because it's too "unnatural"? Create a costume that has pieces that could be fire generating machinery. I have a fire blaster who has a device built that launches gobs of jellied kerosene at his foes, which are ignited by a scavenged piece of a grill starting lighter. His secondary is Electric, which uses a battery pack to overcharge the grill lighter for use as a weapon.

Always remember, how your character's powers work is entirely up to you. You can create just about anything that operates via some sort of weapon or gadget, the only limitation is how you want to describe it.

In general, yes, villain side is more sparsely populated than hero side, but don't let that discourage you from playing there. Especially since with the upcoming expansion we will be able to create any AT and play it anywhere we want.

::Edited: Oh when I say useful I mean for a defender, as a blaster it would not even stay on the bar for 5 mins, nowhere near the amount of damage a blaster requires to function::

I really, really have trouble with taking a power that I will not use, when I could have taken something else that I will use the heck out of more regularly.
I 4 slotted Boxing with Kinetic Combat for a nice 3.75% smashing/lethal defense. I have no intention of using it, but that bonus is absolutely vital to me getting to softcap.

And actually I was mistaken in an earlier statement. I DO have access to 2 PBAoEs in which to slot Obliteration, but I'm not taking either one of them. And Obliteration is a HORRIBLE set to slot in a toggle, unless you have endurance out the wazoo. Lightning Field I'm skipping because other stuff was more important to me. And Thunder Strike I'm skipping because the animation is slightly at odds with my playstyle, which involves a lot of kiting and movement.

I guess I just have a mental block about this. I can easily understand coding a shield, axe, or sword as a costume piece would require a 'node' to attach to. But I can't understand why all powers that are obviously animation FX (Dark Melee, Electricity Melee, Energy Melee, Fire Melee, and Ice Melee), and those which somehow are less obviously animation FX (Claws and Spines) aren't treated the same way.

I was pretty sure that ALL the animation FX sets have AT LEAST one power in which the animation is either two-handed, or switches hands between strikes.

I might buy Claws as being specifically linked to each hand 'node', and being a "costume piece", since you COULD choose two different looks for right and left hand claws right from the main COSTUME tab...but that still leaves Spines as a standout. You can only select a look for your spines under the POWERS tab in the costume creator. To me, that would say they are coded more like the animation FX than the weapon skins.

I'm honestly not trying to be difficult about this, if it really is just a "numbers issue", which would create an unbalanced (overly-powerful) character, I fully understand. I'm not a min-maxer, and I'm not trying to figure out ways to get around the rules...I'm just one of those people who likes the rules to make some kind of sense to me.
Ripper draws a weapon with the left hand, using the exact same animation and nodes as Eviscerate.

There are only 3 powers in Spines that use the left hand, but since those 3 powers exist they cannot remove the weapon from the node on the left hand.

Every two handed animation was tweaked to allow it to be used with a shield. Really look at Bonesmasher sometime with a shield. You'll notice that the arms are seperated when they animate. On non-shield sets the hands are linked during animation.

Hurl uses just one hand, probably due to the left hand node being required for the power.

There are a lot of things that were adjusted to allow for shields, but Katana, Spines, Claws, and Dual Blades were unadjustable by their very nature.

I'll try to find the post from BaBs where he breaks down the combat stances.

As far as I'm aware, Spines and Thorns (the dominator set) are the only sets that are coded with both power effects and weapon skins. That's why they were unadjustable until they had the ability to adjust both at once. The spines sticking out of your body are a weapon skin, they had the ability to change those when weapon customization was released. However, all the projectiles are a power effect, if you changed just the weapon skin, the projectiles would still be the original spines. That's why we had to wait to customize them.

Nothing was ignored, the toon was already deleted before you posted. Please, speak of facts instead of trying to be jerk'ish. Btw, feel free to iggy me, too, since i don't agree with your last post.

Wasn't being jerkish, was just calling it like I see it. People attempted to help you with your problem, and instead of trying any of the things suggested, you deleted the character. That is a problem with YOU, not the powerset. I really think you posted this because you wanted to complain about it, rather than because you were actually seeking help with it.

The ONLY power in the set that has a particularly high endurance cost is Dark Regeneration.

Look at the rest of the toggles in the set: Dark Embrace = .21/sec, Murky Cloud = .21/sec, Obsidian Shield = .21/sec, Cloak of Darkness = .26/sec.

Death Shroud has a .52/sec cost, which is not out of line for a damage aura. Cloak of Fear has a .52/sec cost as well, but I don't know too many people that even TAKE that piece of crap. Oppressive Gloom costs less than Combat Jumping to run.

Most resistance or defense sets have a base cost of .26 on all of their toggles, Shield Defense being an exception. Dark Armor has a lower cost on it's toggles specifically to offset the fact that it has more of them than other sets. Your problem isn't the toggles, it's Dark Regen.

So, if you take the 4 resist/defense toggles, Death Shroud, and Oppressive Gloom, as most people I have seen do, you shouldn't be having the horrible endurance problems that you seem to be having.

I'm not going to ignore you, but I'm not going to offer you advice anymore, since you never take advice that is offered.

Now if you don't mind, I'm going to go enjoy the Dark Armor that you can't seem to wrap your head around.

  10. This would actually come in handy for me. I have diffculty playing pure support characters because I'm an almost pure keyboard player (if I could click on things with the keyboard I would). If I could just say "Speed Boost Teammate 1" and have it do it I might actually level a kin. Well, without having ridiculous amounts of keybinds set up to buff people at least.
  11. Q: What's a fun blaster?

A: The one you're playing. If you're not having fun, play a different AT. Or a different powerset.
  12. I decided to go with Smashing/Lethal when I realized that I didn't have to sacrifice as much from the build to achieve it. And since I was going with Cold Mastery anyway to get Hibernate I figured I might as well build on what Frozen Armor gives me.

I'm not taking a travel power at all on this toon, so the only place I have for Zephyrs is Combat Jumping. My character is Ice/Electric so I don't even HAVE a PBAoE to slot Obliteration in.

I'm kind of limited in what I can use on this particular character, and I've also never softcapped Smashing/Lethal on a squishy, so I figured I'd try it out.

    Stupid question

I've never pulled it off on mine, but I suppose it would be possible with a crazy enough build.

Are we changing the definition of opinion to that of "theory" in 2011?

Just recently, I had someone tell me "My opinion is never wrong." in a global channel in the game. REALLY?

    Seriously, what's up, people?
Pure selfishness, that's all it is.

In order to accept that their opinion is just that, they must first consider other people. Their opinion is inarguable truth because to them, no one else matters in the slightest.

Especially on the internet. You aren't talking to the person face to face so it's easy to tell yourself they don't matter, or even that they aren't a real person in extreme cases of disconnect.

This is just my opinion, and is therefore clearly the truth
  16. My main will be going full villain and back again, just because I want to play every scrap of content I can with him.

Other than that, I will be taking hero toons redside and villain toons blueside as the whim strikes me, or as determined by their backstory. I look at it more as "All my characters are getting twice the game to play."
  17. Exactly why I'm going with Smashing/Lethal defense instead.

I plan on playing as a blapper both in melee and at range, and I believe someone once proved that smashing/lethal covers some 65-70% of attacks in the game. I wanted reasonable defense in a variety of situations over nearly unassailable defense in a very narrow situation. Ranged defense does no good at all if you can't stay at range. Try hoverblasting in a low ceilinged cave and tell me how that worked out for you.

Not trying to say that ranged defense + hover isn't a solid tactic, I have a hoverblaster myself and he very seldom gets defeated. Just this time around I want a ranged/melee damage dealer. So for me, I slotted Tough and took Weave in order to achieve what I was aiming to do.

For a strictly team blaster that has a lot of support, no, the fighting pool isn't worth it. If you're trying to maximize what you can get in terms of reliable defense, it is absolutely invaluable.
  18. Very simple solution here.

If you can't figure out how to make Dark Armor work for you....don't play it.

Advice was given and largely ignored, at which point the problem is with the person ignoring said advice, not with the powerset.
  19. OP:

"What is the fun factor of this build?" is an IMPOSSIBLE question to give an answer to. Seriously, what exactly the hell is a "fun factor"?

Fun factor of something is impossibe to quantify with fact, because it is different for everyone. If I say "Sonic/devices blasters are fun", for ME it is a fact. As soon as I make that statement to someone else it becomes my opinion.

(Which is proof that something can indeed be fact and opinion simultaneously, weird huh?)

I don't know why you have such a problem with Mid's. It's not like this is a console fighting game where you cannot alter the characters. Your choices determine how well your character will perform. If you decide to make a controller and take and use nothing but melee attacks from power pools, that is your choice, but that character is going to suck.

If you choose not to min/max your character and refuse to use IOs, that is your choice, but understand that your character will probably not perform as well as someone's who put that extra thought and effort into it. No, neither are necessary, but neither is it necessary to denounce people for using a tool provided to them. That's like denouncing a carpenter for using a tape measure.

And you're going to view this as a personal attack and say that I'm just like all the mythical people who only answer a question a few ways. That's fine. You can lead a horse to reason, but you can't make him think.

    Have a nice day.

  20. I'd go Rad/MM personally.

Your survivability will be better with Drain Psyche. Irradiate and Psychic Shockwave look (on paper at least) to be a devastating combo.

You don't really have to be THAT much more mobile. Just fire Psychic Scream as you're on your way into melee range. I would only use Electron Hazeto group stuff into a corner, if at all, the animation time on that power feels pretty glacial for what it does.
  21. I'm planning on taking them both, and slotting Boxing as well (with 4 Kinetic Combat)

I put together a build that softcaps Smashing/Lethal defense, and gets around 30% to Energy/N.Energy, so for me Weave is definitely worth it as I would end up 4% short or so without it.

That said, I'm taking the Fighting pool very late in my build, when the only other things I have to choose are Epic powers (going Cold Mastery for Frozen Armor and Hibernate)

I may go Scrapper...simply cause the new Fury gains are a bit too frustrating for me to wanna play a Brute. Not to mention the colors of the power sets are fine, ill be keeping them classic, and i will be taking the Stealth power, not taking it because you wanna see a costume,is pretty silly, especially since the Def % is worth it.....im not sure how much itll cost to IO it to be a soft capped set,but it would be none the less interesting.
You can't softcap a Dark/Dark to everything. Well, at least I've never seen it done before. Broadsword or Katana paired with Dark Armor can be softcapped if you rely on Parry/Divine Avalanche for the melee, but I haven't seen a non sword set do it yet.

If you get to about 30% defense to all positions with a Dark/Dark you should be in good shape though.
  23. Well, then you have combos like Ice/Electric and Ice/Energy.

Why wouldn't you punch a boss in the face while he's frozen in a block of ice? Or in the case of Ice/Electric, enter melee to make that hold stick with Shocking Grasp after using Freeze Ray.

There's also the fact that you're not always going to be able to stay at range. Enemy AI likes to get up in your face, and a set like Fire Blast has nothing to dissuade him from being there. Sure, he's on fire, but if he's not dead yet it means he's pissed now. A Bone Smasher or Havoc Punch is a good way to tell them "I don't want you in melee range", especially if the Bone Smasher is followed up with Power Thrust.
  24. I had the same problem. Try right-clicking on it and chooosing "Run as Administrator"
  25. before IOs I shut off any toggles I didn't need at the moment.

If you're fighting Trolls or Warriors you don't need Murky Cloud, because nothing is going to hit you with E/N/C/F damage.

If you're fighting Psychic Clockwork, shut both of your armors off, they do nothing BUT Psi damage, which Obsidian Shield gives you resistance to.

There are things that do a mix of damage that you need to stay toggled up for, but you can get away with occasionally shutting some off.

If you run Cloak of Fear, that's a huge end drain for a power that doesn't do much.

Dark Armor's resistance toggles are actually on the low end of the spectrum at .21 a second. Most toggles are .26 a second. Shield Defense is the only other one I can think of offhand with costs that low.

And really, you only need 3 toggles to function: Dark Embrace, Murky Cloud, and Obsidian Shield. The rest of the toggles are optional. Cloak of Darkness adds some defense and immobilize protection, but you can run Combat Jumping for Immobilize protection, which is a much cheaper toggle.

I have a Broadsword/Dark Armor that is softcapped now, but befopre he had any IOs his end drain was beastly but managable.
