I gotta throw my support in here too! My game-designer gland says that this is an extremely good way to go about this. Very very good.
As for pricing, I think the base price to purchase one should be something along the lines of 1-4 Full-section re-dos at the tailor (like changing Upper Body type from armored to baggy, for example. That crap gets pretty pricey with levels. At level 50, a section change is 500k, single detail changes are 200k if the section wasn't changed. Just as reference.)
As for the CURVE of the price... some curve that starts out smooth enough that removing 4 or maybe 6 IOs doesn't hit you very hard. And maybe every... three days? week?, the price goes down by one Black Hole bought. (hm, maybe go down by two each week?)
If it were.. say.. a 15% increase per... how would that look?
1.00 --- 1.15 --- 1.32 --- 1.52 --- 1.75
2.01 --- 2.31 --- 2.66 --- 3.06 --- 3.51
4.05 --- 4.65 --- 5.35 --- 6.15 --- 7.07
8.14 --- 9.36 -- 10.76 -- 12.38 -- 14.23
It doubles in price by the 6th purchase, triples by the 9th, quadruples by the 11th, and hits 10x price by the 18th
That seems... almost reasonable, actually. Perhaps a bit steeper of a curve.
Like.. How about 25%?
1.00 --- 1.25 --- 1.56 --- 1.95 --- 2.44
3.05 --- 3.81 --- 4.77 --- 5.96 --- 7.45
9.31 -- 11.64 -- 14.55 -- 18.19 -- 22.74
So it's about twice the price at 4, triple by 6, quadruple by like 8th, and 10x by the 11th. You know, I think something like that would work better.
Anyway, all I'm saying is that this is a great idea and I love it. -
To add on to what these other fabulous posters have said, I want to thank you for being polite.
Those threads where the poster is frothing at the mouth and ready to kill someone are somewhat disturbing. -

My friend had this trouble when he started up playing again recently!
What fixed it, oddly, was simply right-clicking on the CoH icon, and choosing Run As Administrator.
Suddenly, it worked just fine. -
Welcome to the game of wonderfulness!
As far as equipment and suchlike goes.. you shall see the true awesome of Not Having Every Damn Thing Being Bound on Pickup!
Quote:And on the other end of the spectrum, I had an insanely fun Task Force team that was a Scrapper, an Empathy Defender, and SIX Blasters.I've seen amazing teams with no tank, no DPS, and no heals. It was all defenders. All buffs and debuffs, and the piddly damage that a defender does solo was buffed beyond stupid levels of power.
Sort of the WoW equivalent of doing something tough with an Arms Warrior, an Elemental shaman, and six hunters.
Sure, people died, but death is just a slap on the wrist and we had enough stuff to get everyone back up within seconds to EXPLODE MORE THINGS AHAHAHAHAAA!
I'd start blabbing more about this game, but.. between Memphis Bill and the in-game tutorial.. I don't think I have anything left to talk about.
Oh and about travel powers. If you end up wanting to try Teleport, there's a keybind that makes it bearable. Just type:
/bind SHIFT+LBUTTON powexec_name Teleport
You hold shift, and teleport straight at the spot you clicked.
But, I'm more a fan of speeeeed. You learn the layouts of everywhere really well! -
Whew, I was a bit worried there. I'm pretty poor redside, and I thought I had just lost my 40mil, Kismet +acc, and Obliteration/Eradication IOs. Glad they hadn't yet expired... but kind of miffed that it wasn't more apparent that they would expire at all. Still, at least it only applies to emails you send to yourself!
The main reason I had so much wealth sitting in storage was that I removed an incredibly lucky and wealthy villain from my characters (finally), and am incredibly indecisive and didn't know who to give things to. D: -
The Council Marksmen still sit back at a safe range.
... *bursts into tears* -
Personally, I'm not a very evil person. My characters generally reflect this, in that they have reasons good enough to convince themselves that they aren't evil.
Sunsoldier is a fan of the whole Arachnos organization (it's so cool how they made such a great country out of Etoile!) and is happy to do superheroic work for them. It remains to be seen whether I'll side-switch her or not. Could go either way!
Teslanomaly is... I suppose you could consider her pretty damn evil. She's an enabler. Her job is to hunt down targets, shock them into submission, then overload and bork the medical grid to get them sent straight to her employer. She's who you call when revenge is really PERSONAL. She herself will not willingly kill someone, but does that actually matter in this case? Dunno.
Psycho Fangirl is pretty likely to cross just about any moral line. I'm sure she has a strict moral code, but it is completely ignored during anything fanaticism-based. -
I considered the game beaten when Arblis finished the Lady Grey Task Force, and the full panoply of RWZ story arcs. Everything else is now just delicious frosting, but that?
I held my own against odds I never thought I could.
I saved the ******* world. -
Quote:Honestly, it's difficult to pay attention to sciency stuff like this with all the hip-waggling going on there.hey wow-ers, how do draeni do it? they seem to have longer shins.
Maybe I'll see if I can get my screenvideocapturing crap working later and get some good detail on their walking/running animations.
Until I do that: In the interest of seeing how everyone does digitigrade-legged animations, the City Vau-er, WoW Armory has a small selection of animations in the character-viewing pane there. And don't make fun of the "I am levelling up" fashion failure
As far as real-life digitigrades being all standing on two legs goes.. Standing Cat is impressive and standing, but probably could not do much in the way of jogging or crimefighting. What do you mean I'm just looking for excuses to throw links around?! -
Quote:-- Well, to start with, I don't play masterminds. I sorta skim the MM changes and instantly forget everything. Even if there was a change for the bruiser/assaultbot, I wouldn't likely remember it.I left right before mission architect for... WoW. Now I am back!
But I am completely lost... there is so much new to the game my tiny mind cant comprehend it!
Did they fix the stupid Thug Mastermind Bruiser?
Did they fix the stupid Robot Mastermind Flamethrower?
Did they fix the Lolpvp? (I looked and discovered WoW pvp is superior to CoX)
Did they fix the farming?
Did they fix end-game content?
Wuts a... a GM farm?
I must know! Tell me everything you guys know
- Nope, Lolpvp is still Lolpvp. It's not finished, and I'm fairly sure it's not high-priority either.
- THE farming? What does that mean? There's lots of farming everywhere. Farming medium insps for SG bases through the shadow shard? Farming behemoths? Farming story arcs? Farming <insert AE Exploit of the month that will be fixed shortly here>?
- What do you mean, "fix the end-game content" anyway? That's... just really vague.
Also a list of "They better have fixed this" doesn't seem like the kind of demeanor that would allow one to enjoy anything. =/
I much prefer returning to a once-experienced thing wondering what they focused on, what they did, what their sweetest draw is. -
Okay, I officially love this thread. Digitrade legs are really cool and I love the idea of them.. and this is tons of both information and things to ponder on!
-
"Continue to"? I never have. *cackles*
I have a very hard time playing a character that isn't fun by level 25ish. That's just not acceptable. I'm not here to gaze somberly into the distance, awaiting a time when I can have fun. No, I'm gonna have a blast NOW. Maybe that's why I've never gotten anywhere with a bland weapon-wielding powerset.
"You get Crowd Control in only twelve levels!"
"But I'm not having fun!"
"But you will be having fun!"
"Why wait when I can have fun right now?"
Also, I exemplar all. the freaking. time.
Friends are playing new characters? EX into sewer runs! TF going on and I have time for once? EX into the task force! I'm bored and a mission team is advertizing? EX into newspaper mission team!
I did this before the Powers 5 Levels Above EX'd Level awesomeness and the Exemplar XP too. So it's all even better now! I build characters with this in mind too! When going for set bonuses, I try and make sure they apply by level 30 (or the level I get that power, whichever is higher). I don't fill my low levels with nothing but CJ/Hurdle/Health/OtherSupportingPowers.
And I still challenge myself when Exemplarifying down into a group by being reckless beyond belief. Actually, I sorta do that all the time.
Anyway! My basic point is that I don't play late bloomers unless I really truly love their concept. They're boring for like 75% of the game. I'm not a fan of that. -
Oooh! I love this question and am glad it was dug up! My previous answer most certainly is correct for me, too.
-
Quote:Just on this particular note, I like to roleplay, and part of that is that most of my characters will not attack loitering gangsters. However, I do need the XP, so I walk close enough that they decide it's a good idea to commit Assault With A Deadly Weapon on a registered superhero. It's all fair game then!Getting licensed as a Hero entitles you to a lot of wretched privileges. As Poshyb joked about before, being a "Hero" means you can literally eviscerate someone for loitering. We know that the Hellions aren't nice, but "IRL"*, physically attacking someone for obviously being part of a gang isn't okay. You need significantly more evidence than that.
*Ow, I said it, ow ow ow.
My more anti-hero characters though.. they are okay with hellion golf. >_> -
Yeah, that was some nasty weirdness last night. I were also on virtue, past midnight, trying to sell off crap from a deletion-impending character. I found that when an item made it to the WW storage but putting it up for sale just wouldn't stick, I had a few minutes to put everything else on the market with ease, and just that one item would be screwed up. Then came back a few minutes later and spammed post on it till it posted.

I would never commit to stating that a character is a keeper. Unthinkable awful things could happen at any time, and I might just have to remove them.
When characters are actual characters- not just powerset combos- that is when they're safest.
My 22 DB/Invuln Tanker? Probably going to be deleted. I like Dual Blades, I like invuln, I like tankers that are past 20... but she isn't a character. Just a datafile. Even if I were to come up with a story for her now, I would still recreate her. Hell, I probably won't come up with any concept I like until AFTER she's been deleted.
My Dark/Pain Corruptor? Probably going to stay. She cracks me up. She is the most cliche'd unoriginal character ever, and it is hilarious. I have a history of just being unable to enjoy Defenders/Controllers/Corruptors at all. But when I play her, I enjoy myself. Why? She's the Rouge Angle of Satin. She's a Healzor, she's both broody and snooty, she wears dark red and black and her breasts are on the obnoxiously high end of the scale. She's not leaving anytime soon.
Ah, another thing I realize: I don't much care about backstories. I live in the present. It doesn't matter how rich and detailed a backstory someone has, if the character as they are right now isn't interesting in some way or another, they just don't count to me. More than one of my characters has fallen to the old "Great backstory, not really much of a character" issue.
All in all though, it's a balance between gameplay and how... real they are to me. A good amount of both, and they're just plain fun to play! And having fun means being a keeper. -
I... I instigate things. I make crap happen.
I'll be on a team and everything is going pretty smooth, and all of a sudden you'll see in chat-
[Team]Destined to Die: :3
And your reflexes kick in and you try to help out your team and OH GOD THEY ARE EVERYWHERE I DIDN'T KNOW THAT MANY GUYS WERE EVEN IN THIS ROOM HOLY CRAP WHAT HAPPENED TO AGGRO CAPS?!
Generally there are about two people left standing after one of those. Oh god it is fun.
Or running into pocket D, leaping up on a table and being all like "OH GOD RUN THERE'S AN ICE DRAGON AFTER ME **** I'M HIT SAVE YOURSELVES!!!" and using Hibernate.
Or stopping suddenly when I see someone awesome, and riddling them with praise! BAM BAM BAM! And then I'm gone booooom! -
http://www.kongregate.com/ is where I go occasionally when I'm like "Must.. do... uh, SOMETHING!"
I highly reccommend Amorphous and Sonny 2. Dayum. -
I actively avoid affiliating with ANY Guild/Clan/SG/Corporation/Alliance/whatever. ANY of them! I simply hate the way they are.
So as you might expect, my play experience is far different from the one that all the hoity-toity connection-ridden wine-cooler-drinking SG vets have. But you know what? I still have fun! I meet tons of people, play with every playstyle, do whatever sounds fun at the moment, help new players whenever I spot one in need.. anything!
I use broadcast (as if that helps), I fill extra spots in my team with global channelers, I use a polite-invitation macro all over the /search list to pick up everyone, anyone with the slightest desire to play with others! I don't need those clique-goers, I'm a champion of the proletariat, baby!
And when I don't feel like putting in all that effort, I might as well play something else. Nobody is going to pick me. -
Man! I already have Architect edition. I'm tight on money right now but refuuuuse to drop my CoH subscription no matter how many random breaks I take from it.
Aw well. This is still awesome for absolutely anyone who hasn't gotten it yet. -
Quote:A proc in a toggle or autopower gets one chance to go off every ten seconds. How does putting a proc in a toggle work? Im not really into game mechanics (yet) and am curious. I have the Gaussian's Fire Control proc (Build up) in Tactics and have not really noticed anything.
Right? I think? -
Quote:Well, now I know how to gain rep faster than forum rep farming. I mean seriously? 165 new rep points. O_oChompie deserves even more positive Forum Rep for starting this; yes. Just because. Aint it grand.
People should take this as a lesson: Be happy!
Quote:It's the people.

The people you can team with.
That I can PM Castle and say, "Hey, what about...?"
Or request a costume piece from Jay.
Everyone on the forums.
It's the people.
Quote:There are a great many things, but I think, for me, it comes down to two.
I really feel like my characters are uniquely mine. The combination of free-form backstory text, sooo many appearance combinations and the great variety in possible builds even within the same AT make it possible to feel they really are your creations. That sense of attachment leads to investment, both in terms of time and emotional attachment.
Most fundamentally for me, though, I love the combat engine. Yes, the AI is dumb. I really don't care. What matters is that combat is sufficiently random. I have to do things to react to the fact that no combat plays out exactly as planned or exactly like the last one. At the same time, though, I don't feel as though I'm completely at the mercy of the RNG. It's just random enough that my actions control the majority of my destiny, but I can't be certain they'll do exactly what I intended.
Finally, related to the above, the fights feel epic. Taking on lots of foes gives me great joy. Even if they could all be outflanked by a sack of potatoes, it still feels fun.
My characters feel like characters, not just a powerset combination. The game nurtures and feeds that feeling far, far better than any other.
And yes, the AI doesn't even need to be super-smart! Fights are varied and full of split-second decisions and yeah!
That was another thing I was gonna mention, in fact! I LOVE that the game is not easy- it's forgiving. If you screw up, you can DO something about it! Pop inspirations, use godmodes and nukes, spam knockback, hide behind a corner and wait for your AoE's to recharge as the tide of evil charges towards you- there's always something else you can do, and even when you fall for good, your travel power can get you back there right quick!
Also- in this game, it's okay to have things that seem horrendously overpowered! Want to pop four purple inspirations for a tough fight, making you nigh-untouchable? Sure, no problem! Nothing unbalanced about that.
Any other MMO would not even CONSIDER giving players something like Aim+Build Up+Drain Psyche+Inferno. Or Unstoppable. Or Rise of the Phoenix. Or Shadow Fall or Radiation Infection or Tar Pit or Freezing Rain or Benumb or aaaanything like that. We're allowed to have unbelievably powerful things. It's really a novel idea.
Anyway, loooooove thiiiiiis gaaaaame. -
So, I went on a little hiatus from CoH- left the account running, just didn't really play. I came back today. Playing this game gives me that wellspring of glee in my chest, ohmygod it is fun! I love everyone! Best thing ever!
The littlest things, even, they make me so happy. The ridiculous "fweeeeeeeh" sound that the confetti-spewing presents make- SO HAPPY!
Everyone I meet is happy and energetic and just having a great time! It makes so much of a difference in how awesome everything is!
What little bitty things in CoH make you super-spastically-happy?
EDIT: AND KNOCKBACK! *giggles madly* -

A good way to avoid hurting people's eyes and brains and such is to go by this simple rule:
The more of the screen it covers, the dimmer the color should be.
Searing bright yellow works great for laser-eye powers, but is a very bad idea on, say, Dispersion Bubble.
The way the colors are placed on powers, picking a dim version of any color will usually result in a power that is less bright, but still the color you chose (whereas on costumes, the dimmer colors are greyer shades of the bright colors)
So like, choosing Red is really bright and even painful, but going a few bubbles to the right and choosing the dim red- it is much less intrusive on the eye but still red.
