  1. I think it all boils down to what makes you happy (what you find rewarding) in a game. Me - I get a sense of accomplishment from the journey, and don't really care if I ever get to 50. I like having lots of alt archetypes to dabble with, so I'm happy that I can play VEATs even with my only lvl 50 being a hero. I don't like teaming or raiding (after years of doing it in EQ), so I have never done a Hami or even a task force. I love the casualness of COX, which is perfect for my non-competitive/lazy/scattered style of gaming. If the devs introduced "Epitome Archetypes" of the kind suggested, I'd probably shrug and resign myself to the fact that I'd never get to play 'em. I fully acknowledge that I'm not a typical MMO kind of person, but I think COX is the perfect MMO for me.
  2. I play a lot of low level alts. I've been playing for a little over a year. I have only one level 50 character. I solo almost exclusively, except when I can get my wife to duo with me. All that said, I am among the ranks of those who don't see a dramatic difficulty increase in the Praetoria content. It seems a "little" harder, but nothing I can't handle on any of my 6 Praetorian characters (all level 10 to 14 currently). I sort of suspect if the people who posted above about veteran players not being used to the early game anymore are correct, given my relative newbie perspective. It's good to feel competent even though I can't compete with uber-players zooming through missions with big bumps to difficulty settings.

  4. Seems to me that some people who post here should try a little role-playing. When's the last time you heard of a superhero or supervillian whining about being "slapped in the face?" I have a hard time envisioning any of my favorite comic book characters saying, "He gots a Shiny an' I wants one too or I'ma hold my breaths. Waaah!"

Seriously, though, these enhancements are SO trivial that I just can't see the point of all this high dudgeon... even on principle.
  5. I've had lots of the issues posted above, and I chalked it up to it being a new feature with glitches to be worked out. I figure I'm getting WAI information about 30% of the time, and I'll just be satisfied with that for now.

    VEATs and HEATs

LOL, Biospark for the "slap in the face" comment you posted while I was composing mine!

    VEATs and HEATs

Speaking as a Newb (playing for a bit over 9 months), I have to say it's a mixed blessing. My main character is level 46, and part (a small part, but a part nonetheless) of the incentive for not playing alts was the desire to get EATS (i.e. more alts). So when the lowered requirement was announced it kinda took some of the wind out of my sails. But it's not really what I'd consider a "slap in the face," as we used to call every change the Everquest developers instituted. It'll just take a bit longer for my 46 to get to 50, since I'm gonna start a Peacebringer tonight. I'm not all that into rewards-as-gloating-rights aspect of things. More concerned with having fun in the moment.

In my opinion, a casual player does not sweat the details, or worry about min/maxing. They just like to punch or shoot things every once in a while. Going with that definition, I think our mythical casual player would slot whatever dropped that worked for their character.

After the casual player has been around for awhile, they would be more concerned with "red" colored enhancers and would probably of heard of E.D. or at least gotten the advice not to slot more than 3 of any type of enhancer in a power.

I also think that the casual player would craft drops that he could and slot those, whether those are common or sets. I don't think that casual players actively go after set bonuses, but I could be wrong. I think that the casual player would see it as too much of a time investment to learn and plan and bid and build.
That's me. I've been playing for around 9 months. As long as I'm able to run my missions solo in what I consider a reasonable amount of time I don't worry too much about what's in my slots. I use what drops (DO's, SO's, recipes). I do craft what I can from (mostly) hoarded salvage and dropped recipes even if it's from sets that wiser players distain. I learn from the message boards what I "should" be doing but don't sweat it too much as long as I'm having fun. Every now and then I'll spend a little time improving characters that I feel are under-performing.
  9. I think of myself as a new-to-the-game "casual player," and I have NO problem at all with the way the market operates. I've got a lot of alts, my highest level character is 37, and I don't ever stress about the fact that I've only made around 100 million inf on her. If I never see a purple, well, that's my own fault/decision/laziness. The inf I do have is a result of using tips from this forum (thanks, Ebil Ones), and for me it's enough for now. I firmly beleive that if I wanted to take the time I could accumulate a lot more, but right now I'm having more fun doing other things. It's a game, it has rules that govern what can happen in the market, and if players don't like what those rules permit, they're free to complain about those rules, I suppose. But don't complain about the people who are operating within those rules as they now stand.
  10. Playing strictly solo, and preferring finishing missions to defeating masses of critters, I usually stick to the default settings till around level 20, when I throw in bosses for extra excitement/drops. Depending on the toon, I'll fiddle with other settings once in awhile to mix it up a bit.
  11. I'd just like to say that it makes me feel less dumber to know that others have been driven nuts by that mission too!!!

If you can "enjoy the content" and "be very very unhappy" simultaneously you're more schitzoid than me. Maybe you should not get GR until the question has been answered. That way you don't actually HAVE to "PAY FOR" the content; it'll be your very own decision whether to buy it.

  14. It can happen:

I met a woman at a bar about 10 years ago and during casual conversation we divulged that we were both shopping for new computers. I was reticent to admit that I wanted it for gaming but when I did spill the truth, she gushed, "ME TOO!" Now we're married and have 4 computers and 6 monitors on side-by-side desks. She got so heavily into Everqeust raiding for awhile, that I had to fix and serve dinner for her at the computer five nights a week... while playing my own games.

    Then check for names.
Then move your characters and delete the random one.
  16. A few years back, I was whining to a psychologist that somebody was mad at me. She asked, "Well, does EVERYBODY have to LIKE you?" I thought for a moment and replied emphatically, "YES!"

I think that's why I can't be satisfied playing a character labeled as a "Villian," even though some of my favorites are my stalker, MM, and Dom. So, due to my own personality quirks/flaws, I'm gonna move them blueside where I'll be heroic and loved by all the good little pixels I'm saving instead of kidnapping.

    Isn't "AMERICAN" a label?

Personally, I am MATTER (Can't seem to come up with anything more general than that.)
  18. I feel like I've had great success ToTing solo with low level toons.
I've tried out all of my 24 alts, and there are definitely some that do much better than others, though. One of the best is my Lvl 20 Mind/En Dominator, which contradicts a previous poster's comment - maybe we have different playstyles or powers? I also did quite well with a claws/regen Scrapper, who went from about level 5 to 10 ToTing and a Thug/Dark MM who progressed through about the same levels. Worst was my Rob/Force MM (lvl 22) who got pwned by every baddie - they just ignored the Robots and went straight for the toon.
I messed around a little with zombie and banner events, but found them tedious and not good xp solo (no surprise there).

    Where is?

You can also find Annah (and almost anything you're looking for regarding CoX) on Paragon Wiki, which has been immensly helpful to me as a Newbie. Generally, it's faster to look there before asking here - although the folks here are "immensly helpful to me as a Newbie" too.

  20. I wasn't around for past holiday events, and I won't get to log on to the game for about 8 more hours (my boss wouldn't appreciate it if if I was playing here at work).

I just read on ParagonWiki that the Halloween Salvage will drop from the "Trick" spawns this year, rather than as Treats. My question is, is it likely that a solo player will be able to handle those Trick critters? In other words, will the spawns be too many or too high level for a single (reasonably competent, I hope) level 20-30 solo newbie blaster or scrapper(aka Me) to defeat?

    Thanks, in advance,

    Cheesy
  21. Now I want to make a new character named "Boughten Sold" who will spend all his career hovering around Wentworth's.
  22. Solo altaholic newb here:

I'll be spending as much time doing whatever I'm in the mood for, as my spouse will allow. Hopefully the weather will be lousey so she won't want to go for any of those long hikes in the woods that have recently cut into my CoH time. I might try to get my lvl 24 blaster to 30 (my highest level character) or I might feel like bringing some other toons up to speed. I DO plan to use the re-activation feature to log on my wife's lapsed account and invite all my alts to my personal SG.

    Server Qualities

I think ParagonWiki has an interesting description of the various servers' quirks too, though I haven't been playing long enough myself to assess how accurate it is.

Edit: the above post beat me to it!
  24. Noob here. I've been playing CoX for about a month now, almost exclusively on Guardian (which I picked randomly when I got my trial account) and almost exclusively solo. I've got 7 heros and 5 villians, and exceeded my goal of getting all of them at least to lvl 9 (lowest four were 6 before double XP started). Best was my MM, The Gonkulator, who went from 8 to 16, making him my highest lvl character.
After 4 years of Everquest 40 hrs/wk, I'm lovin' this game.
  25. Is there a way to transfer a recipe from a Hero to a Villian? My wife and I recently started playing, and we each have an account. Is there a "special" location where we could trade the recipe between Blueside and Redside characters?
