Sylvester McCoy suggested this in a relatively recent interview I saw, and I think he mentioned telling it to Moffat, so I would rate it as being pretty high in the possiblity list. Not guaranteed, but high.

Quote:Not that likely, unfortunately. At least, not in the form you're probably thinking.Yes, things are known to get a little extra wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey around the Doctor. Speaking of which, what are the chances we'll see a "multiple Doctors" special for the upcoming 50th anniversary?
The first three actors have passed away (Hartnel, Troughton, Pertwee), several of the actors are obviously older that it's going to be tricky (Davidson, McCoy, but especially both Bakers who are almost unrecognizable now outside of their voices), one that will only do it without the wig and in a different costume (McGann), and one has stated uncategorically that he will *never* reprise the role (Eccleston). That leaves Tennant and Smith.
Replacing all those actors with reasonable look-alikes would... I dunno, they got away with replacing Hartnel a couple of times when he was ill, and after he had passed away, so I guess replacing the dead actors isn't that bad really. But replacing the living actors just because they don't resemble themselves as of thirty-or-so year ago feels a bit odd.
There might be some weird jiggery-pokery they could pull [See BabelColor's The Ten Doctors: http://www.youtube.com/user/BabelCol.../8/_nCb3y4J850] and with a *serious* budget they might even make it reasonable, but I fear another reprise of 'Dimensions in Time'. -
Quote:The only way I am aware of is by buying an old 'Good vs Evil' edition box and entering the code to your account. For a time you could buy a GvE item pack instead, but that was before Freedom and the Paragon Market came into play. How do you get a hold of one of these? I'm a VIP subscriber but don't have access to the VIP Gold Club in Pocket D...is there a way to get one?
I'm kinda puzzled that it isn't on the Market already, to tell the truth. -
Quote:This is one of the things that really amuses me. Also, the term 'boy' used to refer to servants, of any gender, and all children (again of any gender) were called 'girls' [Technically boi and gurle in Middle English]. In olden times (about 13th century or before), gender differentiation in children didn't become an issue until puberty, when it actually does make a difference. While not all of this survived past the 13th century, bits and pieces did.Which isn't as long standing as most people think. For the longest time it was the other way around.
Apparently as late as 1900, dressmaker's guides referred to blue as the traditional girl's color (being paler) and pink being the color for boys.
And it persisted longer than that in some places at least. A 1927 news story about the Princess of Belgium being disappointed at having a female child, as she had already decorated the nursery all in pink, in anticipation of having a male heir.
So "pink for girls, blue for boys" may be under a century old.
(the fun things you learn watching QI!)
For example, dressing all children identically lasted up to the Victorian times. Bring an early Victorian matron into the modern day, and she'd be very confused as to why we are making boys and girls dress differently and play with different toys.
A lot of the rigid class and gender roles really ossified in the Edwardian period, prior to WWI. We can't *really* blame the Victorians for it, as much as we'd like to. -
If you know that specific variant, then it's pretty clear. The thing is, the people who know that variant of the Norse myth won't need as much discussion about it as you have.
Of course, there are multiple versions of Hel, as mythology is rarely as clean and consistant as modern mythological compilers tend to present it. The Norwegian, Icelandic, Danish, and Scandinavian versions of these myths vary wildly from each other, as much as their languages do. -
Three Stooges aren't my favourite to be honest (I'm a Marx Brothers kinda guy), but the guys they have playing the Stooges look and act dead on as far as I can tell.

They brought her back. And then said it wasn't really her. And then rebooted and said she never died. And then killed her off. And then brought her back. And then said it wasn't really her. etc. etc. etc.
Whenever they feel the need to darken Spidey's mood again, they'll bring her back and then kill her off again. She's the eternal WIF character. -
Given that ambasadors are normally sent to the country/region they are assigned, it's entirely possible this is a really public message to this guy that the governor wants him to go far, far away.

Quote:I was just trying to to The Great Escape. I defeated 30 Ghouls for the first part, then I went to the sewer part, but my powers were suppressed, is that normal for the second part?
No, it's apparantly a bug of some sort. I bugged it myself, and I think I've seen other mention of it elsewhere on this forum. -
Hi all,
Weird issue. After having been logged in for awhile, I start to notice odd graphical glitches. Grass areas being solid black, some torsos on NPC or enemy models going completely transparant (specifically Destroyer lieutenants and Tunnel Rat in missions), walls going transparant, and the newest one, every 10'x10' square being walled on all sides with black walls with what looks like giant eyes in the middle. This started before the last patch, but it seems to have gotten worse since then (although that might be just that I had more time this weekend to play so I was on more.)

I've bugged this with support, but since I haven't noticed anyone else complaining about it, it's probably something with my setup. -
My first job in IT was to take punchtape from the local HR data entry station, and drive it to the central headquarters building in the next town over to be run into the PDP minicomputer system for payroll.
So, the pigeon thing isn't that inconceivable. -
James Cagney - one of the 'tough guys' of the 30's and 40's, did the musical 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' in 1942. Not exactly a sucessful break, as he went right back to being the tough guy in the rest of his films.
Also sometimes the typecasting just... shifts:
Mark Hamill has gone from one type-cast to another: Luke Skywalker to the Joker voice-actor.
DeForest Kelly did as well, going from stock western villain to stock sci-fi 'humanist'. -
Hi all,
This is probably a stupid idea, but let me set the scene.
I'm on a TF team. I've not been on this particular TF before, and I haven't researched on Paragon Wiki before either. I am completely baffled, and am completely dependant on the leader to tell me what's going on, as he's the only one being presented with the pop-up dialogs.
So I'm sitting there thinking: Hey, why shouldn't I have the opportunity to read the dialogs as well?
Now, there is already a semi-solution: In the newer missions some of the stuff is showing up as caption dialog that everyone can see instead of pop-ups. Also, I could be the team leader, then I'd get the dialogs. But then I'd be slowing down the rest of the team because I'd want to actually *read* the dialogs, not just scan them fast for any gotchas.
So this is a two-parter idea. One, allow other people to see the dialogs, so they can get the idea of what's going on.
Two, there may be a term for an 'opposite of a speed run' already, but I'm going to call it a 'Stop and Smell the Flowers Run' until someone tells me different. A nice wordy name that fits the concept. A TF run (or any other mission at that) where everyone is given the opportunity to read the dialogs & mission text, so they understand why (in-character) they're doing what they're doing, as well as what specifically is being asked of them.
Feedback? -
I've always thought that it was a shame that CoX doesn't have proper seasons and weather. I know how much of a pain it would be to implement it, so I doubt it will ever happen. It's just something that I'd like to see.
-
I've seen some speculation around the Interwebz about Black Widow and Hawkeye. Mainly around what will they bring to the table relative to their super-powered teammates, with respect to the versions of all these characters as shown in this series of movies.
In my opinon, what they will bring is 'team'. They're modern, covert paramilitary agents used to working together and with others. Written correctly, they would be the support inside the team to keep the over-the-top egos, the culture-shock victims, and the mentally-unstable powerhouses pointed in generally the right direction as much as humanly possible. Basically they will be able to demonstrate the value of teamwork directly and viscerally to the rest of them. -
-
So they're finally moving on to more realistic fights?
-
It's so embedded in the way contests work in Canada, that it's easier to include the trivial math question than to argue with lawyers about whether it's necessary or not for a specific contest.
-
The sonic probe was in the story just to demonstrate her rejection of the Doctor by naming it a 'probe' instead of a 'screwdriver'. It had no purpose beyond that. It was used three times in the story:
1. To reset the robots' black box to report 'accident' rather than 'vandalism'. And this was done purely to alert the Doctor/Rory/the audience, that she *had* one.
2. Unlock a door that previously wasn't locked. (At least I heard the sonic noise before she led Rory into the time engine area.)
3. Have something unspecified to do with boosting the sonic screwdriver Rory was using.
So, it's really just a signpost on the social/mental condition of Amy. As such, I think it could have been written better. -
Quote:Yeah, it's a Canadian thing. There's a 'Sweepstakes' Law in Canada that prohibits luck-based contests and gambling. I believe the original form of the law is from about the same time as American Prohibition, but unlike Prohibition it wasn't repealed. It just got neutered by a clause that allows skill-based contents. Further futzing with the law has created the 'math question' as what is possibly both the silliest and yet the most entrenched legal loophole in Canada.I didn't have the energy to comb through all 11 pages to see if anyone commented on this but I noticed this in the CC Winners Form Exibit B
CANADIAN RESIDENTS NOT FROM QUEBEC! To claim your prize, you must be able to answer the following question correctly:
12 x 10 + 4 = (please provide answer)
I had a good laugh which was then followed by confusion. Is this a Canadian thing? Why is there a math bonus question on the Winners Form? Someone explain this to me please because I am amused/confused and need an "OHhhhhh, THATS why!" moment...for closure. -
There is a Canadian Sweepstakes law that was put into place to prevent illegal gambling. All luck-based contests are illegal in Canada. However, to get around this all lotteries and other contests have added a 'skill-based question' (usually a math question). It's one of those cases where people have found such an insanely trivial way to get around a old, seemingly irrelevant law.

Quote:It's not so much the Marines being Americans, as even Europeans and the like don't realize how much their languages have changed over time. Example: My father's from the Lake District, England. He had to train his accent when he moved to Canada because people had difficulty understanding him. When presented with a person speaking the Old English dialect that had been common to the Lake District hundreds of years prior, he was unable to understand it as well. The thing that threw him the most was the amount of slang. He was able to pick out some words, but the phrasing didn't give him enough context to understand the meaning.I think the Marines would find it amazingly easy to talk to a number of the Romans. Our language's base were all known by the Romans and Latin was one of the roots of our language and not to mention they were well traveled. They'd likely pick it up with a more than 50% accuracy (while the Marines being Americans would likely have issues but whatever)
What a lot of people don't realize that a *lot* of common usage is nearly all ages is a form of slang. For example: "Your pen has run out of ink." This is a slang phrase, and the one I was given when I started to lean French as a phrase that didn't translate into other languages well. 'Running out of ammo' is the same slang, and more pertinent to the topic. You're taking your amunition for a jog outside? What? Common Latin (and common other languages of the period) will be full of similar slang phrases that the Romans likely won't even realize are slang because it's the common phrasing of the time. They will likely need to approach the Marine's English as a mostly new language that uses some words that they've heard something similar to, but not in a way they're used to. The shifts in pronunciation will be tricky as well.
This can be overcome, of course, but it won't be easy for either party. It means starting of with the standard 'See Spot Run' stuff that both the Romans and most experienced Marines (as they've spent tours in non-English-speaking or English-as-a-fourth-language regions) will be familiar with when encountering people without common dialects.
Thinking it would be easy is somewhat insulting to people who train all their lives as official translators. What they do is *not* easy, as phrasing and dialect can completely throw a translation. And when there are people with weapons on either side of the translation, a thrown sentence can be disasterous. -
Again, I'm not convinced the Marines would even bother attacking the Romans in force. It's not like Marines don't have their own compliment of nerds and geeks throughout the command structure. The second they figure out time travel has occured, I think they're more likely to pull back for a 'command-level' rethink and evaluation
Afterall, these are not stupid people. Stupid people don't get promoted in the Marines. Stupid people get their people killed without benefit, which kinda halts promoton prospects in the modern military. Smart Marines will want to know *exactly* what's going on, and what effect they are having. They are going to recon, and attempt to question natives.
In a unit that size, it is entirely possible there will be a couple of Marines who can speak and/or read Latin. Which means that with a lot of effort on both sides, communication is possible. (Living Latin as actually used by the common man being sufficiently different from Classical Latin as taught in schools that the communication will not be easy.)
This is not to say that they won't end up fighting Romans. Just that there is a lot more going on than 'Marines automatically shoot anything that moves.'
Also, the Romans legions have a good compliment of smart people in them as well. Unlike what movies and what-not teach, just because they existed two thousand years ago does not make them naturally stupid. We are not naturally any smarter on average than they were. When Roman legions ran into people who had better tech/tactics than they did, they didn't try to steamroll them, they tried a variety of non-military tactics to co-opt them. Celtic cavalry and ironsmiths, goth mercenaries, eastern bowmen, all got hired on/incorporated into the Roman empire. Because the Romans were experts with a skill that isn't based on tech/tactics. Making good-sounding deals. Given half a chance, I think the Romans would rather make a deal with the Marines than try to fight them. -
Quote:Not being a doctor myself, I'm under the impression that a lot of the innoculations and immunities we enjoy are against the versions of the diseases that exist now. That the diseases from a hundred years ago, let alone two thousand years ago are likely different enough from their modern counterparts to be a serious problem. Take influenza for example, there are hundreds of different strains of influenza running around now and they have to guess as to which version to innoculate people against every year. None of these versions even vaguely match the versions that would have been running around Rome at the time. The food and water thing is a definite possibility. But it also cuts both ways. The Marines wouldn't (probably) be immune to the various bugs and nasties that could be found in the local food supply, because let's face it, hygiene wasn't a very strong suit in that era. The locals would also not have immunity to the bugs that the Marines would invariably carry.
However, tipping point would probably go to the Marine medics and docs as they would have some knowledge on how to go about treating food poisoning and the like.
Over the short term, who cares? Most of these things would take a week or more to incubate, I think, and the way this scenario is set up it will be over in a week.
The question I have, would the Marine unit actually attack? Yeah, they've been dropped into this scenario, but what makes them believe the mysterious voice telling them to attack the Romans? What's stopping them from allying with the Romans, and building a *better* Rome?
