Cookie Monster wins the thread.
For me, no character is safe from deletion until they hit level 50. Possibly not even then. I haven't deleted a 50 yet, but it's just a matter of time.
I'm a roleplayer. I write. All my characters have concepts and stories. But ultimately CoH is a computer game, and if I don't enjoy playing the character in combat then they're gone. Do I like the powersets and playstyle? That's the deciding factor.
It's probably strange for me to put so much emphasis on mechanical functionality, since I identify so much as a roleplayer. But at the end of the day, unless you're sitting around Pocket D all day, a character's meant to be played.
If I like the concept enough, I might re-create a deleted character with different powersets. So my characters can be 'keepers' in that sense.
I had a 40 MA/Inv scrapper. And I hate Inv as a scrapper powerset. I loathe it with the flaming passion of a thousand trolls. So why did I have a 40 MA/Inv? Because his personality and concept was such a hit with my supergroup that he kept getting dragged along for Task Forces and mission teams. I didn't solo him at all.
I deleted him recently, but it was obvious he had to live again. So he does...with different powersets.
I have a 44 Mind/Emp controller that's in the same situation. I've grown to hate playing /Emp, but she's reached that level based purely on RP team play. This means she'll live again when I inevitably snap and delete her - but the deletion will come. Probably at 50. -
Quote:Robots/Force Field Mastermind is an excellent choice. It's very survivable. Your bots don't do anything strange besides shoot people and buff themselves, and the Force Field powerset is a pretty easily comprehensible mix of buffs and light crowd control.Awww you guy's are great ^.^ this is by far the best community so far and as of right now im playing as a villain mastermind robotics/force and loving it so much right now i think im gonna make a scrapper hero though but my villains name is Drone Daddy look me up and as of now im playing on infinity and have already met some nice new people just like me.
Robots/Force Fields is one of the most effective Mastermind combos in the game...because it has natural synergy. You have Force Field buffs. The Protector Bots also have Force Field buffs. They stack. They stack real well. So yeah, if you're going with a Mastermind for an early character, that's a good choice.
Masterminds can be tricky to control, though, particularly when you have a whole bunch of pets at later levels. Probably the most important thing is to figure out a control scheme that works for you. A lot of players like to use keybinds for their pet controls, though that's not necessary or required - it's just a popular way.
The conventional wisdom is that scrappers and brutes are the easiest characters for beginners to learn, because they're durable and do lots of damage. Also, their playstyle is more straightforward. But that's conventional wisdom. If melee doesn't work out for you, don't be afraid to try...whatever seems coolest to you. -
CoH is currently using around 880,000 to 900,000K memory for me, according to Windows Task Manager. That's high but, but not absurdly so....at least the game's still running fine for me. What kind of memory usage should CoH usually have, though? I can't remember.
That said, it does seem a lot of folks on the team here are experiencing 1.3 mil + usage - and slideshow game performance - which is clearly not right.
I agree, it looks like there's a leak somewhere, at least for some people. -
Quote:It's not quite rank-based humour...but uniform tags in the Singapore Army typically list the soldier's initials followed by his family name.A couple of interesting names I've come across during my Military career:
Sgt Steele
Private Dancer
Private Phuket
Logical, right? Except...Singapore's majority ethnic group is Chinese. Why's that a problem?
Private SA TAN
The real kicker is that this happens frequently. There's been several SA TANs in this army. One was in my company. -
Quote:Okay. One big gap in your guide... you haven't said anything about the HEATs and VEATs.Thanks! But honestly, I totally want to hear any changes that you would make. I can only give so much information, mostly based on my own experiences so other opinions are great here.
I know, Kheldians aren't exactly great for PvP.
But I thought the spiders do pretty well. They're not as dominant as they were under the old PvP system, but they're still good. It's probably worth mentioning.
Yeah, not everyone has a 50 and access to the epic ATs, but I'd wager most folks reading these forums...do. -
Quote:Well, you have to bear in mind that the list I posted...is the sort of thing lil' Nicki's parents and teachers make her write down after super-powered misbehaviour. Possibly repeatedly, until the message sinks in. So when faced with a Nemesis steamhorse, we'd get something like:-Sez you!
(Cyborg.. Steampunk, Unicorn.. Warhorse, whatever)
51. I am not a villain. I do not have patron powers.
51a. Nemesis is not my patron.
51b. Nemesis does not grant the 'Summon Pony' power.
51c. Even if I ask nicely.
51d. Not allowed to go rogue because 'the redside has horsies'. -
Quote:Right. One of my SGmates...well, technically he has alts?I have plenty of alts, because like many others, I enjoy trying out new powerset combinations & concepts. But at the same time, I also continue to regularly play my main level 50's. I believe it took me about 3 months to hit 50 on my first character. I still play that character now, 15 months later. Most of my in-game friends are the same way. I think you are making a bit of a mistake in assuming it has to be one way or the other.
But there's only one character he actually plays regularly - his original 50, his namesake Inv/SS tank. He's an RPer, and this guy is the only character he cares about.
Gameplay wise...because he only plays that one character, instead of investing in different alts like most folks, he's simply spent massive amounts of time on his build. Where most of us talk about outfitting a new alt, he talks about getting another billion inf to purchase one single extremely rare enhancement.
It's a totally fair way to play. -
What the hell, let's give this a shot. I doubt I'll get the nod, but whatever the case, I think this is totally awesome of our MA overlord. Doc Aeon, I salute you. My creaky old attempt at comedy is:
Arc #74191 - The Great Brain Robbery
Contrary to what his critics claim, Nemesis is actually just a nice old man! And he needs your help. No backstabbing or double-crossing at all. He'd never dream of such a thing. Perish the thought.
Arc contains 2 EB/AV fights, one each in the first and last mission. Final mission can be failed; this is intended to give the player a choice between two endings. -
My second-oldest character is this guy who...isn't really a martial artist. He fakes it - his mutant power is an energy aura around his body that deflects damage, and lets him put extra 'oomph' when he hits people.
He's an MA/Inv scrapper now. Power customization helps some, but really MA/Elec would be the best fit for my mental image of his powers. Also, I really hate Inv on scrappers, so the character's been at level 40-ish forever.
The weird thing is, even though I don't play him much, he's got critical mass of his own. Other folks in my RP supergroup really like the guy; he's been used by other players for fiction, comic appearances, and so on.
So I'm actually being pressured by other people to reroll him. Or IO him. The rationale being, if I do, the character will get out more.
But I don't wanna lose the badges, so... -
One of my blueside characters is a little girl. Who's a mad scientist...

(Yes, all of these came from actual RP. The full list has over a hundred entries, but most of them are player-character-specific. =) -
Yeah, so.
I ain't gonna claim it was easy, though. A couple of 'em made me think for a minute, specifically the one about Eastgate. And the aggro cap. Interesting test.
And yeah, the English...it's okay. Presumably the creator's from a German-speaking country. -
Quote:It's common in most countries, but the reasons why do differ. The Taiwan media operates mostly like America's - that is, most TV networks are aligned with either of the two main political parties. Thus the TV networks actively try to push a political agenda, and promote their respective side.ANYHOO, that was sort my intent to leave the readers wondering about. Truthfully though, I modelled the whole interview after the ones we see on cable news nowadays where people ofthe same political ideology get softball questions thrown at them all day and there's never a meaningful challenge to anything they say.
Not a political rant here either. CNN & MSNBC (for starters) do it with Dems, and Fox and a few others do it with Repubs, so there's plenty of blame to spread around on all sides.
The situation is somewhat different in countries like...say, mainland China. Or Singapore. Where there's essentially one political party in control of the country.
When I worked as a journalist in Singapore, my editor always said: we don't have to be positive about the government, but we cannot be negative - the worst we can be is neutral.
It's not even about active censorship or government oversight; by and large the governments don't play an active hand in controlling the media. It's just understood that there's lines you do not cross. -
Quote:A quick scan of the thread reveals that folks have posted the file names for at least part of the Sonic Blast powersetI appreciate the link, folks, but I don't get it. I can't find the data for the Frost Breath "hush" sound, nor the names or the Sonic Blast sounds nor anything at all besides the CoH Updater and Uninstaller. I think the odds are high that anything I tried to do would mess up the game. I'll just have to wait until Issue 20 or whenever custom sounds come out to make a sonic/.
Or are you having problems with the process itself?
See, what you're supposed to do is locate your CoH game folder - which should be in Program Files or something. If you've never messed with your local files before, you shouldn't actually see any visible sound files in the paths provided. The trick works by creating folders and files of the specified names - they then override the game sounds. Rolling back your changes is as simple as deleting those files you created. There is really zero risk here.
You can 'replace' game textures in the same way. You are not actually altering the game files in any way. You're simply making folders that mimic the game paths, putting something else there, which then tells the game - 'hey, use this file instead. -
Quote:I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this already, but...while Justice does have a rep as a server with a high Australian and Oceanic population, that doesn't help you all the time.Due to the fact that I work 2 PM PST to 11PM PST. My play times are from 10AM-1PM PST and 12AM-3AM PST.
Bear in mind I'm speaking [i]as a player in the Western Australian/Southeast Asian time zone.
See, 10am-1pm PST works out something like 1am-3am in Western Australia. So folks would be heading to bed. Heck, for the two other Australian time zones, it's even later at night by that point. So not that useful.
However, 12 midnight-3am PST is about 3pm-6pm in Western Australia, and that timeslot does hit primetime (ie. 5pm onwards) in the other two Australian timezones. So that should be fine.
All that said, Justice is a reasonably high-pop server anyway, so I doubt you'll have great difficulties. -
I have a similar setup with my TV - I just use a cheap wireless mouse and keyboard, however, comparable to what folks have mentioned here. The batteries in mine are not rechargable, but I keep a couple of spare AA and AAA packs...and it's not really been a problem. Only once has the mouse conked out in the middle of something.
The main thing, though, is making sure you're comfortable playing like that. I actually found that I don't really like sitting on the sofa with the keyboard on my lap. It's not really a natural position at all. Not so bad if I'm playing a single-player game, but if I'm in CoH, I probably want to type... -

Well, the question is...are stoners supposed to run in Granite all the time? Probably not. I'm just guessing, but I don't think the designers originally intended for folks to stay in Granite 24/7.
The other Tier 9 defensive powers are all 'oh crap' panic buttons, stuff you only use when you're in a tight situation. That includes the self-rez powers that Fire and Dark Armor get. Even the current Moment of Glory is like that, broadly speaking: you use it before you get into trouble.
'course, many stone players...take Granite and run it all the time. Because you can. But I doubt that was the idea when the devs sketched out the powerset.
It's kinda silly to set things up so that players level a character up to 38 (or 32, for tanks) and then proceed to ignore the rest of their powerset.
Just because you can stay in Granite all the time doesn't mean you should or must. Yeah, you CAN, but it's probably not the intended playstyle. The game doesn't stop you from doing this, but I wouldn't expect any design changes to make pure-Granite builds better.
Personally, I LIKE the idea of giving Brutes Stone Skin at level 1. I totally agree, having to take a power you don't plan on using is kinda suck. But...I doubt this will be changed. -
And further down the thread, the OP confirmed he was indeed fighting custom mobs with Fire Aura:-
[ QUOTE ]
Anyhow I think I found the problem and as embarrassed as I am able to admit this, I have made an error. The lack of dmg was because of the custom mob(not my mission) I was up against had fire aura. Well I'm relieved and at the same time ashamed for my snarky comments.
[/ QUOTE ] -
With Super Strength, your only AoE is Footstomp...but Foot Stomp is a really good AoE attack - better than Whirling Hands from Energy Melee. If you get a lot of recharge, Foot Stomp can be up pretty damn often.
You also have awesome single target damage in Knockout Blow...which is itself a hold. On top of the various knockdown effects in Super Strength, it's a set with both good damage and good crowd control.
Willpower is also good. I have a 50 WP brute myself. With IOs and such, you can have more HP than most tanks. Since you also have a lot of regen, what you get is a very tough character. Which...is good on teams.
Putting the strengths of both sets together - yes, it's a good team brute. -
[ QUOTE ]
In reality I hardly every solo. So what WOULD be an good build for my Brute?
[/ QUOTE ]
Personally...I'd say a Brute with more AoE damage. Energy Melee only has the one AoE attack, and Whirling Hands is pretty weak.
Something like Elec Melee may be better if you team a lot.
But honestly, play what's fun for you. It's hard to really screw up a brute. All combos can work. -
That is very strange and is not supposed to happen.
Hopefully someone who's more technically inclined can help you with this. -
[ QUOTE ]
I figure those guards, even if they are taking advantage of our law-abiding supers, are at least semi-effective in their job. Unlike those Vanguard Security Officers. They keep asking me to step over to them so they can check my clearance - but I can just breeze right by them and they don't even TRY to stop me. I really don't see what's keeping all the lower-leveled characters out of the RWZ... or villains for that matter. "Step over here, Lord Nemesis. I need to check your clearance. Or... Just go right on through - not like I'm going to stop you."
[/ QUOTE ]
But they are checking your clearance. See, every Vanguard security guard has the Radiation Blast powerset.
X-Ray Beam, see? By the time you walk past 'em, they've already peeked inside your wallet, seen your ID...
And, well, if you thought the hazard zone guards are perverts, well, the Vanguard guys also know your...uh...secret identity.
They've, um, seen beneath the mask.
Yeah. -
(QR) As others have said, scrappers and blasters are your best bet.
The reason is damage output. Killing things fast is the way to go.
Of course, you need to keep enemies from killing you.
A scrapper's tougher than a blaster, so that's a bit easier. You have defenses and stuff from your secondary to keep you alive.
All scrappers solo well, but Regen's particularly good for a solo player. Why? Well, one weakness of Regen is that it doesn't do well when large chunks of damage all come at the same time. But that's only a problem on teams. While solo, you'll slide by fine.
Secondly, Regen has Quick Recovery, and you get it at like...what, level 4? Other lowbies have to huff and puff until they grab Stamina or whatever at 20...or slot endurance reduction. You get Quick Recovery virtually from the beginning. Even at the low levels, you can KEEP KILLING. That's an AMAZING boost to levelling speed.
All that said, personally - my fastest soloing character is indeed a blaster.
As a solo blaster, you either need to kill stuff so fast it can't touch you...or have some kind of mez to lock stuff down. I personally play an Ice/Ice blaster.
With all the holds and slows, my blaster's pretty much untouchable against most enemies. They freeze. Then they die.
Other blaster types have their own mitigation and tactics. It's more of a knife edge than playing a scrapper, but if you get it right - yeah, it's faster. -
The most recent mention of 'Incarnates' was in the ITF. Since Cimerora was added in May 2008...
...no, you haven't missed anything on that front.
The big features that are coming soon are power customisation (ability to set custom colours for power effects), and side switching (with the Going Rogue expansion). -
First, don't call yourself stupid. There's nothing wrong in not knowing about technical stuff. Not everyone's a cyborg. You asked for help. That's being smart.
As KitsuneKnight suggested, you really wanna post in the Technical Issues and Bugs section of the forums. That's where the experts hang out.
If you do post there, you'll probably need to provide a full report of your computer system - what kind of processor you have, how much ram, what your video card is, and so on. This will help people figure out what the problem is.
Yeah, I know, you're not familiar with that kinda thing. Don't worry.
Windows Vista comes with a utility called DirectX Diagnostic Tool, or 'dxdiag' for short.
To open dxdiag, simply type dxdiag in the Windows Vista start menu search bar...the little text entry field at the bottom when you open the Vista start menu.
Click the 'Save All Information' button in the lower right hand corner. This will output the dxdiag report as a text file. You can then copy the contents of this text file into your forum post. The resulting report will contain a bunch of information about your computer - ie. just the kind of data folks need to help you with your problem.
I'm not an expert, but off the top of my head, it appears that you've got some kind of video card problem...I'd check to make sure a) your video card can actually run this game, and b) your drivers are up to date.
It's also possible that this is c) a Vista issue. City of Heroes is not officially supported on Windows Vista. That doesn't mean it can't run on Vista, merely that it isn't intended for Vista. As such the tech forums are quite knowledgable about Vista issues and there are several threads with solutions to common problems.
I think your issue sounds more like a video card/driver matter than a Vista problem, though. I run City of Heroes on a Vista computer myself, and I've never seen anything like this. But that's just a guess. I'm not an expert.
Hope you can get this sorted out. Good luck.
