Are EM/INV brutes a good build?
Don't know invulnerable brutes, but I have a tank with invulnerable and it is pretty durable. Just gotta remember that your strength comes from being surrounded to pick up the defense from invincibility. Some tanks/brutes are VERY mobile and that is a killer for invulnerable against the exotic damage.
As for energy, I have stopped playing pretty much everything I had with enerrgy melee. It is just too single target with not enough of anything else going on. It doesn't have to be an AoE monster for me, but I gotta be able to make some noise(footstomp), throw something(hurl/hurl boulder), or something. Even dark has like siphoning going on. I just need something to break the monotony of punch, punch, punch. You may enjoy it for the same reasons I hate it, but I have stopped a tank, brute, stalker and even my Ice/energy blaster. It just wasn't my thing, but hopefully this sheds even a glimpse into the set.
I actually have one of these, at 28 last I checked. So far... it's okay. Invuln is a little weak against exotic damage until you get Invincibility, and some passives to reinforce it, and Energy Melee is nice for inflicting very large amounts of damage against a single target. The latter set does have its issues though, it used to be overpowered, now it's arguably been nerfed a little too much. Of course, it's still perfectly viable.

Good? not particularly, but that's not to say it's a bad build either
Everything in City of Heroes can work. It's a matter of finding what is fun thematically and mechanically for you.
Energy Melee/Invulnerability will be really good at mauling a single enemy but be not as fast at taking out lots and lots of enemies relative to other sets. Invulnerability with give you great survivability against standard weapons like guns, knives, swords, and hammers but less against exotic and elemental attacks relative to other powersets.
EM v good single target dmg
INV very good smash lethal res and defense from groups (which fury builds up quite nice in too)
only complaint i'd have is EM is a very end heavy set... thus you need stamina / ++recovery enhs
Saber Spectre Inv / EM Tanker on Guardian
Wraith Scimitar EM/ EA Brute on Guardian
Attack of the s00p3rphr34k ID 49744
I got a toon up to lvl 10 with dark/dark but I didn't feel it suited me. There weren't enough melee based powers for me I guess.
In reality I hardly every solo. So what WOULD be an good build for my Brute?
One that you have fun with, or "feel suits you", as you put it.

Personally...I'd say a Brute with more AoE damage. Energy Melee only has the one AoE attack, and Whirling Hands is pretty weak.
Something like Elec Melee may be better if you team a lot.
But honestly, play what's fun for you. It's hard to really screw up a brute. All combos can work.

EM is great for soloing, but man does it suck on teams. I try leveling my EM/WP Brute and just get annoyed at how all I can do is punch bosses. I found myself scrambling for an epic AoE just so I can contribute some more.
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

Try playing an Axe/Fire Brute. Even after Stamina at lvl 20 you'll still need End Reducers in your build to be effective.
I was thinking SS/WP. I just read a guide that says it's an amazing set. And with the color changes coming in i16 I should be able to darken it to look a little more brutish and less tank.
What do you guys think? Good for large spawns and teaming?
SS/WP is very good, and fairly popular. I've enjoyed it.
Your AoE is mostly in Footstomp, which you have to wait a while for.
You should be asking further Brute-related questions in the Brute section, as you will get more specificly Brute-related answers.
Now, as for /Invuln redside, it seems that Psi damage is more common over there, so if I was going to play an Invuln character, I'd go with Scrapper or Tank. I.E. blueside.
With Super Strength, your only AoE is Footstomp...but Foot Stomp is a really good AoE attack - better than Whirling Hands from Energy Melee. If you get a lot of recharge, Foot Stomp can be up pretty damn often.
You also have awesome single target damage in Knockout Blow...which is itself a hold. On top of the various knockdown effects in Super Strength, it's a set with both good damage and good crowd control.
Willpower is also good. I have a 50 WP brute myself. With IOs and such, you can have more HP than most tanks. Since you also have a lot of regen, what you get is a very tough character. Which...is good on teams.
Putting the strengths of both sets together - yes, it's a good team brute.

I think that pretty much settles it. SS/WP it is.
Thanks for all the help guys.
