XCOM: Enemy Unknown

I was surfing around the other day and wandered into the XCOM: Enemy Unknown site. I never played the original but I've heard of it. So I checked it out and it looked pretty interesting. But the fact it's turn-based turned me off as I'm more of a RTS guy.

Then I got to the base. Check it out: http://youtu.be/U88EcjtDnyE

Now I'm a little more intrigued.

Very cool, but I am more looking forward to the X-Com game that is set in the 1960s and is a FPS game.

I'm looking forward to it. Thank gods they chose to stay with the turn-based tactical war-game model.

It's 106 miles to Grandville, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing faceless helmets

The "glam cam" aspect of the game may get a bit old after a while as well as slowing down the game play but I'm definitely prefer this to the FPS take on the old game. Also the showing you what counts as cover and how much is a plus in my book.

As for the base mode, it reminds me a bit of Little Computer People or the Creatures series, looking in and watching all your soldiers during their downtime.

They need to go back and make Fallout, X-com all turn based, that's how they started and how they were successful, leave the FPS to new games and never mess with the classics.

Too many 50's to list here's a few you may know.

XCOM:Enemy Unknown is turn based but has a moving camera to show the cinematic style results of your turn/action. Forgot the name of the XCOM that's a FPS.

I'm eager to see this game, played the original. Ah the fond memories, the frustration, the anger as squad members freaked out and shot members of their own unit in a blind panic, a grenade that comes out of no where and wipes out a whole unit. Yep, can't wait for the fun to begin.

Saw this recently myself and it definitely has me intrigued. I'd heard of X-Com before but never gotten into it. I'll probably pick it up.

The original X-com was/still is a wonderful game. It sets a great mood with its musical score and the way information unfolded in ufopedia....then comes the first night-time terror attack, usually in Buenos Aires....

Grab it on steam for a cheap price and play away!

I never played the originals, but I'm looking forward to both X-Com's. The current Game Informer (Mario on the cover) has a good look at the opening hours of the Strategy game.

The Demo is up on Steam, downloading it now.

The demo...doesn't quite leave a good impression. The demo itself was far too short, and doesn't showcase what X-COM is about. Furthermore, the textures were very muddy, there was too much mouse acceleration, and the graphical options was very limited

But you know what? I'm still excited about this game. All the video feed and live streams have convinced me that this is a worthy successor to X-COM. If my issues with it aren't resolved in the final product, I'll be slightly upset but if the gameplay holds up then I'm willing to overlook it. Then I'll be upset later. Much later

Well two words. Sid Meier. His stuff has rarely steered me wrong and it's his team that's behind it. They also seem to be big fans of the old game so hopefully those two factors mean that I won't be disappointed.

Just played it, seems pretty fun. At first glance, it feels like a X-Com game, the one free mission built some tension. I liked that you can pull up the list of modifiers for a shot (so can see why you have the % chance you do). The various soldier specific abilities could be good, will depend on how they are arranged, am also interested in seeing how exactly the loadouts you can choose effect things. The base looks really good and should be fun building it up.

They've already admitted that it was just a quick demo they'd thrown together for something else, and decided to make public. Releasing a demo early at ALL seems to be a miracle anymore.

Just saw this thread. I've been playing this game for the last couple days, and I can say that it's totally amazing. I'm not a big fan of strategy games, but I did play the original, which is considered arguably the best game of all time. This new remake had big shoes to fill, but I think they did a great job with it. Definitely check it out even if you don't usually play strategy games. There are tons of gameplay videos on youtube, so you can get a good idea of what the game is like.

Got it last night, thank heavens that I don't need to be constantly connected to play. How many of you "customize" your troops looks? CoH habits are hard to die.

Playing on normal, so far no wipes, just the occasional "No I didn't want to move that player, now they are in the open" deaths. Lost one sniper that way.

Akshully, the guys who made the original Wasteland (spiritual predecessor of the Fallout series) are coming out with Wasteland 2. They had a Kickstarter a few months back and while they were originally shooting for $900k in funding, they ended up with close to $3 million. Anticipated delivery date of the game is October of next year. The game will be a turn-based one to boot.

I almost bought XCOM, but I held off. I never played the original, nor have I ever really gotten into "this type" of strategy. I like turn-based, grid movement RPGs (Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyria Chronicles, Vandal Hearts), but never really got all into the games with resource management duties.

Still. I downloaded the demo; now I just have to find the time to play it.

As a long-time fan of the original series, I have to say that Firaxis knocked it out of the park. This game is better in almost every way than the original. They took out all the tedium and busy-work and kept in the challenge and flat out terror.

I tried to play the demo when I had a window of a few minutes yesterday, but after 10 minutes of the tutorial, I realized I wouldn't have enough time to get through the demo. So I shut it off and took an old man nap in my recliner.

Went ahead and bought it. Looked interesting enough, and it's getting great reviews. Also, I want to support the gamble that 2K took.
