Call to Action: Vote in Massively Poll

Bright and Shiny,
American Wonder
I voted to keep it going, realizing how stupidly impossible that is, now that the studio is permanently gone and NCSoft would never reverse the decision out of embarrassment.
|
1) As pointed out above, NCsoft shutting down CoH permanently and NCsoft reversing their decision is a false dichotomy. A third, very reasonable--and not embarrassing at all--option exists to sell the game to another company, one for which City of Heroes would be in their long term goals. I'm not asking for charity here, real money could be offered for the game.
I've seen a lot of people vehemently insist that that would never happen. With all due respect, unless you're the CEO or on the board of NCsoft, I think it's impossible for you to know that. I have been presenting valid financial, public relations, and marketing reasons why NCsoft would be amenable to letting the game go to someone else. I've been hammering home the point that helping to keep City of Heroes alive is indeed a very smart move for the company with tangible, real benefits.
2) The studio is not yet "permanently gone." Yes, 80+ people are out there pounding the pavement looking for a job. But it's a tough economy, and it's only been a week. I'm certain that some of them will find new jobs fairly quickly; they do, after all, have a proven track record of developing a genre-defining game. But again, don't you think that one week is a little early to be declaring it "permanently gone"? I realize the time constraints we're under, which is why I've been staying up until after 5:00am every morning (6:30am or so this morning because I had some press releases to get out) and getting up at 9:00am.
3) Having said all that, THANK YOU for voting yes in the poll. This just goes to show that although we can disagree about minutiae, at the end of the day, we're all fans of the game. Pulling together and doing that even though you're not hopeful is a much appreciated sign of support. I hope that we'll eventually be able to turn the tide and give you positive reasons to think, "You know, this crazy movement might actually work..." Until then, like I said, thanks for helping us out.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.

Voted and linked in sig to spread the word to all threads I post in. I'm going to add this to my character bios in game, too (they all currently have "Help Save the City" messages, with a lot of room for more, to help non-forumites get involved).
Voted. Passing the message around. Over 88% positive, seems the haters moved quickly but aren't growing. I imagine a troll personality makes a person act like a bot.
I guess another possible reason for thinking it's time, in the case of someone who doesn't play, might be the "8 years". That's a herring. Try the game, try other games, it's ahead of the curve because it does what we dream of doing (bringing out the hero in our heads, not a hero written by someone else). For others, that might be Angry Birds. Using a "latest engine" is only a minor fraction of the experience. It's been brilliantly explained so many times in the last few days: it's what the developers do with the engine.
I agree absolutely with TonyV above, the game can live on. It might develop slower with the team having been hit over the head, but I don't mind if it develops slower. It's where I like it to be already.

August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.
This is houtex, aka Mike, signing off the forums. G'night all. - 10/26/2012
Well... perhaps I was premature about that whole 'signing off' thing... - 11-9-2012
Even tho you deleted my COHFaces for some natural mayonnaise..
I voted in your favor.

2. True, I only have the history of MMO shutdowns to go by. I also would be shocked if any would come back if given the opportunity, outside of the community team.
3. Any remote chance is something I will always be behind, as I have played many, many MMOs over the years and only stuck with this one. I am mentally preparing myself to move on as a protective precaution. Currently I am playing with Diablo III, Guild Wars 2, and Planetside 2 for the most part - still play Team Fortress 2 and a little Tribes Ascend once in awhile. I also love fighting games a whole lot.

Petition to end shutting down CoH:

Kind of a bizarre topic to vote on. Sort of like putting to a public vote: Should video games exist?
And a whole bunch of people would vote No on that too.
(Semi unrelated side note: I think it's funny that a number of people who think video games are silly think its completely normal to scream at a television when sports are on.)
Done. We know there are still way more pro-CoH supporters out there;

GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Voted and Promoted.
You have to remember, some people will vote no who had a bad experience with the game, (like that PVP advocate who posted a thread a week ago) and some people will vote no just to be troll negative. Its reflective of the great gene pool that is the interwebs. Our goal should be to rise above the static and make sure our noise is heard by the appropriate ears in a pleasant of matter as possible.
Remember the great quote from grand theft auto: "you get more hookers with franklins than with baseball bats."
Or something. I may be off a bit on that one.

It kind of reminds me of when Jason Scott blogged about the sudden closure of AOL Hometown. Although he got a lot of positive feedback, some of the responses were negative, smug, and unhelpful which he categorized in a follow-on post. I think we're looking at a similar situation here, just in a different context. Or to put it like Jason Scott did, the non-positive responses can be lumped into the following general headings:
You'd think an event like this would cause people to think, "if it could happen to CoH, it can happen to my game" and consider the consequences of investing so much of their life into it. Just because something's old and doesn't have state-of-the-art graphics doesn't mean it deserves to be thrown away like tissue paper. That so many sites dedicated to retro gaming exist, and that so many older video games are constantly being 'ported to new consoles or featured on digital distribution services, stands as a testament.
