Wait. HOW many possible character combinations?
2. You forgot to mention pool powers. I'd imagine figuring out the combinations from just that alone would be a headache.
3. Counting blank slots... do we really need to cheat at this point?!
@Rylas
Kill 'em all. Let XP sort 'em out.
Rylas, I hate your avatar >_>
Every time I scroll down in a thread you post in (also, that other poster with the avatar of all the pokemon stacking), my laptop hiccups for like 3-5 seconds when I get to your posts...and it happens every time, even if you posted twice on one page and after the page fully loads.
1. That number right there is impressive enough already.

- Yep!
- Actually no I didn't. I just forgot to paste them in from another document. It's fixed now.
- I know. It's absolutely insane how customizable this game is.

Nice. It never occurred to me to try out that many combos.
I did however spend some time doing the math to get a rough estimate of how many costume combo options there are in-game. It's a number with a lot of zeros at the end.1

For Peacebringers and Warshades, whether or not to take squid and lobster forms is a pretty big choice, so I'd say there are effectively four types of each. On VEATs, the only real choice is Fort/Widow or Spider/Bane, since you can still select powers from the initial set.
So, 1267 Primary/Secondary combinations total. Not too bad, IMHO.

Okay,
We talk, over and over again about how extensive the character customization is. And most of the time we're talking about the costume editor. Let's do a bit of "back of the napkin" math to run up a guesstimate of possible build combinations. As of right now on Live. 14 Archetypes Blasters have 13 primary and 7 secondary sets Controllers have 9 primary and 13 secondary Defenders have 13 primary and 13 secondary Scrappers have 15 primary and 10 secondary Tanks have 10 primary and 15 secondary Peacebringers have, essentially, 1 primary and 1 secondary Warshades have, essentially, 1 primary and 1 secondary Brutes have 16 primary and 11 secondary Corruptors have 13 primary and 13 secondary Dominators have 8 primary and 8 secondary Masterminds have 7 primary and 11 secondary Stalkers have 12 primary and 9 secondary Soldiers, at final level, have 2 primaries and 2 secondaries Widows, at final level, have 2 primaries and 2 secondaries 1281 Primary/Secondary 9 Primary powers (EATS and VEATS have more choices) 9 Secondary powers (Again, EATS and VEATS have more choices) 4 Inherent Fitness 3 Static Inherent (Brawl, Sprint, Rest) 1 Origin Inherent (One of 5 origins) 4 Ancillary pool choices (10 pools, 4 each powers deep, plus 3 additional "third tier" powers in the travel pools) 1 Epic pool choice (9 pools, 5 powers, varied by the 14 ATs) 24 Power choices 67 Assignable slots 73 Alpha combinations (including "blank") 46 Judgement combinations (again, including "blank") 73 Interface combinations 118 Lore combinations 46 Destiny combinations 37 Hybrid combinations Granted, a significant fraction of these are legal-but-broken-in-play or illegal configurations. But I haven't even begun to delve into possible enhancement combinations, and we're already talking about numbers in the tens or hundreds of QUADRILLIONS. |

And Hyperstrike, you said it sir! I for one still had 4 combinations I wanted to try BEFORE even thinking about the stuff i24 was bringing. *sigh*
@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.
I am a blaster first, and an alt-oholic second.
This is one of the reasons I never took very seriously people who asserted they'd played every powerset combination to 50.

And yes, the staggering number of character builds (not to mention which powers to pick in any given set combination) is one of many things that no game comes close to competing with CoH on.

If we're handing out combos for people to play, I'm calling dibs on TA/AR right now!

Great subject, Hyperstrike!
I've wondered about this myself.
And, indeed, whenever I think of the customization-greatness of this game, the actual power options are absolutely forefront in my mind, right along with the costumes.
It's really the combo of looks and mechanics that has always made this game truly the king of customization and of my enjoyment.
I think just the number of legitimate primary and secondary powerset combinations is a great enough number to celebrate.
And it was still growing!

Soldiers, at final level, have 2 primaries and 2 secondaries

The same doesn't hold true for Widows, because Night Widows really are a true extension of the base primary/secondary, instead of being a complete unique branch like Fortunata/Banes/Crabs.
3Primary and 2Secondary would also be acceptable, as there's really not much reason NOT to take the bane spider secondary branch to support your Soldier primary (Unlike the Crabspider branch secondary, which saddles you with an unused costume appendage).
When they made Stamina inherent, there was some debate on the forums as to if that increased or reduced the variety of builds available. So I decided to see
For a "standard" archetype, with a primary, a secondary, up to four pool powers and an epic pool available, the total number of unique builds at level 49 (the last level you get a power - just counting powers here, not slotting options) was 1,193,041,661,448. So there are just over a trillion ways to build a fire/fire blaster before slotting is taken into account.
Multiply that by the number of archetypes, the number of primary/secondary combinations, and then start in on the incarnate powers. We had not even begun to build all the possible characters. We needed (need? Hey, I can hope...) more slots...
Oh - no, adding Stamina did not reduce the variety of builds available. The level at which you have the maximum possible build diversity turns out to be 45 at about 1.56 trillion.
