I've spent hundreds of $ on this game, I want my money back
You may have seen it as an investment, the law sees it as playing a game.
Those whose current subscription goes past shutdown will presumably get refunds for the extra months, those who just bought a bunch of points might be able to get a refund.
Me? I've spent hundreds, maybe thousands on CoH. What I got back was worth so much more.
My arcs are constantly shifting, just search for GadgetDon for the latest.
The world beware! I've started a blog
GadgetMania Under Attack: The Digg Lockout
I think the only person who has successfully attempted such a lawsuit was Richard Garriott; though he didn't sue specificially for these reasons, they did involve how NCSoft killed off Tabula Rasa. Too bad he didn't include ownership of the IP as part of the suit ...
I consider every minute spent on this game, and every dollar, well spent. All games close eventually, it's the nature of online games, and while I'm devastated and heartbroken by the loss of the game I've called home for 7 years...I wouldn't even considering demanding the probably close to $2000 I've spent on it back. For me, I got everything I wanted in exchange for that money....thousands of hours of joy with great friends that I'd never have met anywhere else (literally thousands...my main character alone has 1366 hours on her, as of this post, and will have many more before the final day). My money was used for development, and paying the salaries of the people that made that joy possible. Now, as for recently spent money on future sub time and points...they'll compensate us. Standard operating procedure in the closure of an NCSoft game includes at least a refund of that, and usually a final closing event and a compensation package. In the end, you paid for a service and you got that service. And, if you're like most of us, the service you got was irreplaceable, but the money well spent.
YOu're likely never going to get your money back.
Think of it as if you had invested in Pogs or Doomtown CCG or some other hobby. The hobby wasn't sustained and now your money is gone.
Questions about the game, either side? /t @Neuronia or @Neuronium, with your queries!

I can't believe I just spent money days ago to purchase a new powerset.
It would have been nice to have gotten some warning before this happened. I won't fault the company for only caring about it's bottom-line profits but I daresay it sets a new precedent for lows.
The MMO player deserves a little more consideration next time before they do these things. Maybe perhaps ease them into it and let them recover some funds in this hard hitting economy?
Their actions have veritably blacklisted them in my book as far as future options for MMO's goes. I used to have the greatest respect and admiration for NCsoft. If they had treated the customers better perhaps I might have even tried GW2. As it stands I won't go near any of their MMO's for a long long time.
Thinking on it realistically. The company weighed their options and saw the success of their new MMO launch. This gave them the confidence to say "Ok we'll dump this old IP with the knowledge that we can keep profits going with our new products."
I should have known.
Still I thank them for all of the great service they have provided year after. Even I was blown away by all the new content and powersets month after month. (Thats what makes this all so surreal and strange.)
They worked hard and they KILLED harder I guess?
Take care NCSOFT. You are classy but only when you are honest...
For 8 years, I paid for this service and I don't regret a penny of it. Still cheaper than going to the movies. I do want a refund for the sub that goes through May of next year.
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

"Unfortunately Mr. EvilGeko we cannot refund the dollar amount, however we can transfer your pro-rated subscription to one of our many other great games".

I thought they might, but I don't think any of their other games have subscriptions anymore.

"While we cannot refund your subscription we can transfer the pro-rated amount to your NCSoft points account"
Or whatever they are calling their generic online currency - as the saying goes you'll probably be able to get your money back when you pry it from their cold dead hands
Hope I'm wrong though given the length of your sub, I certainly hope you get a refund rather than some cheesey offer.

Then its going to be;

Points... not sure on this one.
They *have* done "gift" packages (normally an account for one of their other MMO's) which is *above and beyond* what they are legally entitled to do.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.
Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.
So sad to be ending ):
From previous experience of MMO closure from NCsoft... refunds on subscriptions are pro-rata'd from the announcement date back to the card that did the payment.

A refund of the "unused portion" of the sub is fair, IMO. Refunds of 8 years of subscription fees (as I've seen people calling out for) is just silly. That's like asking for your past rent to be refunded when you move out of an apartment building that's being demolished.
Thursday Aug. 30 was my b-day so I bought 15 dollars worth of points that night, it was about 11pm then find out 12 hours later about the game, yeah that really sucked.
Cancel the kitchen scraps for widows and lepers, no more merciful beheadings and call off christmas!

I don't want anything back. I just want it to stay on.
If they offered me anything, I would refuse.
If they offered to refund me, I would also refuse.
I spent this money for the experience I had: Awesomeness defined.
It's just too bad that money is the issue that's causing the Final Boss of the game to truly show up and kill it. Asking for a refund or threatining suit is just being... petulant. I'm sorry I said it because it's a little hurtful now given the circumstances, but there it is.
Be heroic, and accept your investment in what it was: Good at the time. Perhaps Great. Or better.

August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.
This is houtex, aka Mike, signing off the forums. G'night all. - 10/26/2012
Well... perhaps I was premature about that whole 'signing off' thing... - 11-9-2012
I was so incredibly saddened to see that CoH and PS are being abruptly shuttered. I loved this game so much, it was my favourite MMO and I had always just assumed that it would be around forever...
That being said, I've sunk hundreds of hours and hundreds of dollars into this game, and that was all predicated on the fact that the game would be around and playable for years to come. I saw the money and time as an investment, and them shutting down the game robs me of that.
Does anyone know a good lawyer? Maybe we can get a class action lawsuit going since they've let us down, taken our money and we won't even have access to the product we paid for with the expectation we'd be able to continue playing it. I consider this a violation and I want to make them pay for squandering this time and money, for taking my money and throwing the product I paid for away.
