Discussion: Captain Mako Week Events!

you know something that would be really funny is if during the invasion AE went offline. Say Mako destroyed the generators, I know at least on Freedom , a lot of players would be out for his blood.of course this will not happen and afterward some players coming out of AE will say "invasion? what invasion?"

My hope is that Captain Mako will, in addition to whatever else he planned, make an appearance in each and every Death from Below and Drowning in Blood trial. Come on, those titles Scream "Shark Attack!"

No announcement, no warning, Just full fledged level 54 AV with some Elite boss henchman rise out of the sewers right before the hydra are defeated or Right after the AV fight starts in DiB, Mako wades ashore.

Then, have some in game therapy for character as they wimper "But I have been in those sewers a hundred times, there were no Sharks." Who knows, maybe scare some toons into the Hollows or Kings Row.

So other than the single day and time for each server is anything else happening? Sorta was thinking you know sharks in the water and such. So far nothing. If its just a fancy meet n greet why the big build up?

I found the event very disappointing - there wasn't anything different except to bring down Lusca which I've done a few times in the earlier days - didn't even get a badge, stood around in pocket D for a while and that was it. The event was built up to be something special, it wasn't.

is the event supposed to give no XP?

Bad Event is Bad. Right now on Exalted. Couldnt take full league from PI to Talos. Some of the team spawned in Talos 2. Event wasn't going on in Talos 2 until we started letting them know in help chat. If you can't support EXALTED how do you plan on doing larger servers like Freedom or Virtue? All Badies are 54. No XP. So if you aren't incarnate you will die. You need a team/league for lowbies good luck when you swap zones.

what happens? apparently a lot of waiting around, and no xp for defeating lvl 54 bosses. glad I didnt transfer my alt from Virtue to Exalted (since I wouldnt be able to make the virtue one)

YA so far the event sucks royally, in talos one there are two lusca's spawned, yawn, and then afterwards the after party in Pocket D will be where Mako is and he'll give some titles, sigh, no badges in sight,

Raid on PI by ferry. then in Talos. Its Corlex and arachnos. Then IP for super Lusca. Now Pocket D "party".

Party gave out a few kirby dots, a water blast set, and a costume.

So now you know.

i agree, on exalted heard a lot of broadcasting of "boring" then one of the devs piped in that if we wanted they could not do anymore villian vs player events. seems a bit of intimidation going on from the Devs. and a little thin skinned. after about 1 hour we went to PD to wait for the spoonful of sugar making the medicine go down.

I do get that it's a lot of work for the devs and this was pretty short notice to cobble together. It does sound like it's kind of a flop though and probably a good example of -why- these things need more planning and set up

agreed. it's nice that they put the effort into organizing it, buuutttt it would have been nicer if the actual shark attack happened like an invasion all week with the same mobs spawning like the rikti or nemesis did. xp would be nice too. lots of lusca is nice. new critters would have been nicer. utilizing the shark powers would have also been nice. idk how complicated it is to make a new critter but even adding a few water blast attacks and shark power attacks to existing critters [coralax] would have been not too hard i think...

anyway tangent. it is great of the devs to do this. specific time events dont seem to work from previous experience, a bunch of people wait around to be disappointed from their expectations that grow with waiting, and a bunch of people cant make it and miss the few rewards.


villain vs. player events are nice and the one i've ever been able to attend was a lot of fun and i hope to be a part of more. but :shrug: a little extra creativity goes a long way and you have to be careful not to over-hype some things.

The event was shown to be scheduled from 5pm - 8pm Pacific Time. I logged onto Exalted at 7:30pm and the event was over an hour before. That's bogus. Some of us do have to work, so it would be appreciated if scheduled times are adhered to.

i don't know if Mako ever showed up in the battles.ok lvl 54 showing up if i was not a incarnate or 50 i would be lvl 49 so the mobs are +5.

kind of a hard fight for most toons. and while on a populated having large teams will not be hard, but low pop will be hard, had a few people log in about 30 mins after the start. a little upset that they "missed" stuff.

one of the problems with having a 1 day event is the first servers the players have no clear
idea what is going on, by the end of the week, after reading the forums and "word of mouth" a better idea is known by all. even if the event was tested on test server, a more players would be better informed. Yes i know that ruins the surprise, but which is better a "surprise" with a bunch of upset players or a smooth running event.?

I logged on to Exalted after it was over, so I must have missed all the weeping and frenzied rage - all I found were people having fun hunting down the invaders all over Talos Island - we formed a team and spent an hour clearing up the place.

Summary of Liberty's "Captain Mako Week" event on the red side.

So the admin notice about Sharkhead goes up, and my signature Stalker is the first black-mask on the beach. So what greets me as I head into the fray? Lusca's in the water and a trio of level 40 Arachnos Fliers are sucking sand into their intakes as they meander around. And that's it.

The fliers last two minutes, and a handful of my evil brethren show up to take on Lusca. That lasted five minutes, after which it got real quiet for a stretch (presumably as event-attention was focused on the blue side). Then a trio of Lusca clones show up, all glommed together. Nine villains against three overgrown octopi.

Twenty minutes later, we're all chewing on sushi and wondering what's next. Well, then it starts literally raining octopus tentacles without notice, warning, or fanfire. A league of thirteen villains, and we're suddenly on the wrong side of 3:1 odds. Halfway through the fray we start seeing admin notices from Cap'n Mako trash-talking us, so we start breaking out the KY Jelly we had been saving up until that point and get ready to rumble.

'Cept he never showed up. And once we finished with the last of the tentacles, we're being told to hop on over to Pocket D for our Dev-sanctioned pat on the head.

Let me summarize this in case I lost someone. Red-side fight of Captain Mako week, and the champion of the arena was a no-show. Aside from the trio of chewable fliers at the very onset, Arachnos was also a no-show. Sharks were a no-show, since all we got were recycled octopus from Independence Port, but we still got "Swimming With Sharks" titles. And I didn't see Corolax one in the mix.*

On a scale of one to ten, I rate this event "potato" for a lack of variety and a major disappointment to everyone ready to take on a signature villain. Granted this is the "first run" of the week, so maybe there are a few bugs to iron out, but still.... if the event hasn't hit your server yet, I wouldn't get too excited. "Your mileage may vary" and all that.


(* In defense of the community staff, I got to speak with NCsoft_Freitag in Pocket D afterwards and he swore he spawned a few pods of Corolax for us. I went through my logs and couldn't find any defeated Corolax at all, so maybe he hit the wrong button or spawned them in the wrong location or something. All I'm saying is I personally did not see them.)

well, this sounds very disapointing, i mean i do enjoy beating down GMs and whatnot, but no rewards whatsoever coupled with no badges is basically just begging me NOT to show up

Here's a Summary of what happened Blueside on Defiant:

I logged in only about 5-10 minutes before the scheduled event. I made my way from Cimm to Talos, because I needed to be somewhere it was easy to travel from... and really? Talos has about everything except a RWZ.

So, I see the Red admin messages from Mako threatening Talos and Peregrine. Since the character I was using was a lvl 50 (just barely) Khel... I opted for the less crowded PI (we're talking I was stuck in Mapserver lock hell trying to get from the Auction house to the TUNNEL to PI.) Plus? The Admins (Hit Streak and Freitag) asked that 40+ players go to PI, to alleviate congestion and such.

When I got to PI, the Arachnos fliers were already going along the shorelines dropping off a combination of Souped up Bane Spider Commandos and a couple of really tough kinds of Coralax (Sentinels and Guardians are what I remember.) Everything ranged from level 40 to level 54. Depending on the levels of the nearby heroes.

By the time Captain Mako appeared (and I did see him on the beach and attacked him a time or two,) most everyone was Incarnate Level (or there by teaming and Leaguing,) and so were our opponents.

Yes, really, I saw and punned with Mako during the fight. Someone insulted his Mama at one point too.

There were waves of Fliers, then mostly the Coralax for a bit. Then? Mako taunted us with something scarier. And there appears LUSCA! (Looking RIGHT at me, man.) With each tentacle guarded by more of the souped up Coralax.

Mako again taunted us by informing us this Lusca was somehow scarier than the Hydra. I got the impression, and completely swore in my head about it, for every tentacle we attacked, two or three more would spring up. I was right.

Somebody mentioned the lack of XP. I can say that if you die, as long as you significantly contribute (or your team/league does) to defeating both Lusca tentacles and Coralax, you'll get debt repayment. And I was getting drops (most notably inspirations) for defeats as well.

I'd noticed during the fight that a lot of people had golden titles that mentioned swimming with sharks.

After we killed the final tentacle, and cleaned up the beach of Coralax we were invited to head to Pocket D. My computer? Froze. What? I was fine during the invasion and the battering of attacks, but multiple people teleporting out to Pocket D froze my machine. So I did a hard reboot, and logged in... joining the party already in progress.

I hung around until the bitter end... dancing amongst the crowd, formed a Drum Circle, genuinely enjoyed my first party with the Devs. Hit Streak and Freitag were highly amusing, calm in the face of player outrage, and had I blast scaring people with my talk about knitting (because I finished up a hat for Christmas gifting while in Pocket D today.)

Fun. Debt Collecting for Squishes. Devs were very Punny during the initial live server run.

So, the event doesn't hit Justice until Friday night. As such, I haven't actually experienced it. But maybe - hear me out on this - Capt. Mako week wasn't meant to be some big, fancy event like the Spring Fling or the Halloween event. Maybe it was just meant to be something to fill a little time during Shark Week because, hey, we've got a sharkman in our game. Kinda like that Nemesis invasion we had a while back, only with obviously less resources devoted to it due to I24 taking up a lot of development time.

Well i am going to try and make this event on friday on guardian server.

This event sounds great to me.

Alot of people dont sound thrilled....but i think of it this way.....

This is going to be something new players will get a nice taste of things and what may be possible.

It will be a time for some of the old ones returning and the new ones joining to see what others have done and what they missed....and to see the potential thats there....instead of always having everyone else do everything for them...and give them someting to aspire to.

I just have to decide which character i will play for this....

And since this is a going to be a beach party...i wondering if i need to wear a swimsuit for this....hmmm....have to work on a costume for it.

I just hope there are some bubblers and shielders out their planning to be at this event with me....as i dont want to get too much sun burn.

If I had to sum up my experience from the event on Defiant yesterday, I'd have to call it "not memorable".

We had :

* Arachnos Fliers
* Bane Spiders
* Coralax golems
* an unattackable Mako
* league bugs (sidekicking not taking effect, league getting split up in different instances)
* Freitag and Hit Streak breaking immersion by randomly talking as "Mako", "Freitag" or "Hit Streak"
* Freitag not getting my Robinson Crusoe pun
* 2 reward merits for pummeling the upgraded Lusca

Talos swarmed with Arachnos and Fliers on the hill outside the monorail station. Mako showed up on the beach with Coralax in Talos + PI. Multiple same zones. Makos was a redside stalker and cheated death. Lusca. Eventually the bloatware COH client hit memory limits and crashed as it regularly does nowadays. I logged out in PD before Mako arrived to hand out stuff as I was not all that bothered about free titles or the Retro Sci-Fi costume kit, which I have already have.

All that spoiled it for me (aside from other players behaving badly which always happens in any mass event) could be fixed easily if the COH client went on a diet and stopped massively using resources and dying.

Any event is OK with me as long as the client does not crash during it.
