I had to double check that the post date wasn't from the 1st. But it looks like augmented reality is getting another step closer.

I've been reading up on these, should be interesting but I can see a downside.

People are already careless driving while texting/talking on smart phones, I can only imagine the driving hazard posed by using these things while driving.

Also I suspect some conspiracy buffs would see these as a way of beaming subliminal mind control messages to those that wear them. I can see the tinfoil hats now

I don't doubt we'd see things like that happening, but then again we could just say that the invention of the automobile had the downside of causing people to get into accidents.

As for conspiracy theories, I'm less worried about "mind control" than I am about pop-up ads. Now that's a nightmare I wouldn't want to live in.

I think it would depend on how they're used. I could see people wearing these for directions while they drive, with a line for their route projected on the road, instead of looking over at a SatNav. And would it be that difficult to hardwire the glasses so that any potentially distrating features were disabled when you entered a vehicle?

They're already talking about mandating cars be equipped with cell phone inhibitors to keep people from talking/texting while driving. Seems likely that they would have to include limiting the use of glasses like these while driving too. Maybe as long as the glasses would only allow for "driving oriented" apps that don't distract from driving then they'd be OK.

There's already a lot of work being done on complex, military-oriented directed energy weapons around the world. I'm only really going to be worried about it when they can make effective energy weapons that are "man-portable". When Joe-Bob can hunt squirrels with a "phased plasma rifle in a 40 watt range" it'll be time to run for the hills.

Yeah I know such weapons are on the drawing board....just wish someone would break the drawing board and say "no more".

Now for a hypothetical question: would you want the phased plasma rifle in a 40 watt range, or would you want a rail gun?

I assume you're talking about "hand-held" versions of these weapons. There've been a good number of artillery-sized rail guns tested but plasma weapons of any type are barely off the drawing board at this point. Not sure if I'd technically prefer one over the other beyond the simple idea that I'd like to try out whichever one becomes a practical reality first.

Well on the rail gun vs plasma, it would depend if I wanted to pick up little pieces of rabbit or if I wanted said rabbit half cooked before it hit the stove.

Interesting you want someone to say "no more" on something like that but are fine with Google (or whoever) glasses that could be used to track where you go, what you see, etc...

I'm the opposite of you (I think) in this case...don't trust Google...a new cool gun? Whatever, even if it is man-portable...still have to have someone ticked off enough or paid enough, sick enough, etc... to use it on someone (thinking personally not necessarily for war purposes which is another thing entirely).

The first thing I thought of when I saw these was that episode of TNG where everyone on the Enterprise sans Wesley Crusher and Lt. Ashley Judd (and even her eventually) became addicted to this virtual reality game that beams directly into your eyeballs.

I think it is safe to say that we can be sufficiently tracked by many things already, one more tracking item isn't going to matter much these days.

Not to mention the majority of these things are integrated into society pretty easily via targeting the young generation. By the time the kids become adults they are more willing to embrace the new tech. This is despite the prior generation having some reservations based on old school notions, smart phones and facebook are perfect examples of this acceptance.

This is one of those things where I feel like I'm falling behind the times. I don't use facebook and myspace, and the only thing my telephone does is make phone calls. Me and my old-time ways of console gaming and laptops...

What I hate is that some Resumés now ask for your facebook page. It is one of those things where it is starting to become a necessity to put up with their crap. Next thing I know, I'm going to have to get one of these glasses because my new job will require us to stream info about stuff that may be happening on the job, and then 90% of the time I'll get adds for Viagra and performance enhancement drugs shoved RIGHT IN MY FACE!

Ah, technology... putting more naughty parts into people's faces.

You make some excellent points that articulate some of the reservations old school folks have with the changing times. I embrace tech, but not at the expense of my personal space. As time goes on I have had to lighten up on letting the world into my personal space.

Kind of sucks but the next generation or two is going to be like what's the big deal.

I am sorry I have absolutely no idea what that ANIME deal has to do with anything I said.

I apologize in advance I can't stand ANIME and have no idea WTH was going on in that video and how that ties into my comments about youth and their ready acceptance of technology.

The series has to do with a society that is heavily into Augmented Reality. Everyone including children interact with objects both real and virtual (via glasses and ear buds). However if somethings are virtual, it also means that the world is hackable. It also means that what you see may not be totally real.

The series, Denno Coil, isn't as metaphysical as some of the dialog blocks found in Ghost in the Shell, but does look at the potential perils of AR. It's a good SciFi topic.

Ok tyvm for the translation into old folks speak. Being a early 60's baby I try to keep up, but some of the stuff is so beyond my interest/taste it is hard.

Personally I cannot wait until all cars are driverless....simply to get the reckless and crazy drivers out of the driver seat. (Note: no I am not saying that I am not a perfect driver, far from it....its when I see someone swerve out from behind a big rig and then all but cut said big rig off as they swerve in front of them.) It is getting to the point where I am half afraid to drive anywhere....

Still in regards to this item....the techy things from Star Trek are becoming more and more reality....like cell phones, those were in the original series (the communication devices that they flipped open...think about it) and the medical beds that you lay down on and there is a screen at the head of the bed that brings up all your vitals and perhaps more...I saw something like that was being tested....so yea this device isn't really all that shocking...

Anime is a broad category. I'm not sure how you can hate it so definitively. It's somewhat akin to saying "I hate comic books."

The linked series in particular deals a great deal with AR.

Well google Google Glasses and watch the video. It's their first pass on AR. I'm sure Microsoft will soon follow with their own take on it.

Yep I actually thought about that TNG episode when I first heard about these Google glasses too. Obviously the people at Google either never saw the episode or don't care about turning us all into Augmented Reality zombies.

Not when we're paying for it.
