I honestly, seriously, and totally do not understand people's love of Sacha Baron Cohen. I didn't find that funny at all, and sympathize with Ryan Seacrest having to stand around in a dirty suit and get made fun of for hours (and for days after, due to people's inability to move on from bad jokes).

Never understoof people's love of Sacha Baron Cohen either.

Though really, were people making fun of Ryan Seacrest?

Sacha Baron Cohen may be overrated and/or not the most original comedian out there. But I'll always give a few points in favor of anyone who'll poke fun at the Hollywood "establishment" embodied by people like Seacrest because far too many of them are pompous twits who deserve to be taken down a peg or two.

I feel sorry for anyone who didn't see something like that coming from a mile away. Honestly, Seacrest can't be that surprised this happened. What did they think we was going to do: a funny interview and leave? Come on, he had a jar of "ashes". They were getting spilled on somebody.

Anyone who thinks you can just stroll into the Oscars dressed like a lunatic is dumber than a bag of rocks. This entire thing has been a setup.

Wasn't that the whole supposed "controversy" over whether or not they were going to allow him to show up as the Dictator in the first place? Everybody knew that if he was allowed to make an appearance like that he was going to pull -some- kind of stunt. I'm just glad someone let him do it to make fun of Seacrest, even if it was a setup from the beginning.

I think the Academy was afraid that he wanted to be seated in the theater dressed as the Dictator, he supposedly promised to change into a tux.

Inane humor at another's direct expense is inane, and lacks the funny.

Pretty much all of this.

Never got this guy outside "Oh, some idiots think he's funny for some reason".

I won't argue that Cohen's style of humor is the best in the world. I don't really like him all that much myself. But something like 99% of ALL humor in the world is based on the fundamental "laughing at the silliness or misforutunes of others" concept. Just saying...

Oh, absolutely!

I just disagree that it is funny to cause actual misfortune, and then laugh.

In my opinion it depends upon how it's done. SBC was at his best IMO on the Ali G show where he would interview politicians or public officials and expose their fundamental ignorance of the issues or of what people really cared about; or better yet when he purposely made racists and homophobes uncomfortable or angry. Was it nice? No, but neither were the people who were his victims. Was it funny? Hell yes.

But things like the slapstick bit at the Oscars? I'll pass on that. It's cheap and unfunny IMO. I thought J-Lo did a better job of shocking folks.

There's laughing at silliness, there's laughing at misfortune, and then there's "causing misfortune and then laughing about it". They're three distinct concepts (though silliness and misfortune can and often do happen at the same time). And the third one isn't very funny.

INCIDENTAL misfortune (a'la the "World's Funniest Home Videos "baseball to the nards" shot", etc), can be funny. Mostly because it's unintentional, somewhat unexpected, and you have a reasonable suspicion that the person survived relatively unphased (at least once the stinging wore off and the language calmed down).

Ultimately, those specific examples involve letting others make fools of themselves. So, yeah, a little different. But there are lines even there.

Yep, 'Slapstick' succeeds when it involves everyone cooperating together, not taking advantage of someone.
edit: to refence Aggelakis' excellent post above - that qualifies as 'silliness'.

People were consistently pointing out his dirty suit for the rest of the night, most of the time by making a joke which forced Ryan Seacrest to laugh as if he appreciated a) Sacha's "joke" and b) the joke by the person in front of him. And because people are not very creative, he probably heard the same few jokes over and over and over (which we were allowed to skip due to the wonders of television but he had to endure for hours).

To be fair, I think Ryan Seacrest similarly survived a dirty suit relatively unphased.

You haven't followed some of the fashion choices at these awards shows, have you?

Seriously, though, the award ceremonies have long been a place for artists to both grandstand, self-promote, and prank one another. Granted, we see mostly the self-congratulating pomp, but... they had friggin MUPPETS in the attendance. An invitee with proper credentials dressed like a 3rd world dictator is par for the course.

Poor Ryan Seacrest! Having to endure the snide comments from people with which he has cursory relationships with for THREE hours?!? I'd rather have my hands cut off in the Sudan than have to suffer a dirty suit! The horror!

Sorry if that sounded political. I'm not really trying to argue the plight of the Sudanese but am more incredulous at the hollow reactions of his co-hosts and those who would feel sorry for him. At the end of the day, he's still in show biz and runs a small media empire so sympathy from me is hard to come by. Not to say he doesn't work hard for it, but still it's a lot to come home to.
