Sacha Baron Cohen.......Oscars legend?
Personally, I think SBC is excellent. I love the way he makes people look like fools all by themselves. He did it amazingly well as Ali G and Borat and the Borat movie was brilliant, to my mind.
What I loved about this whole affair was the people who run the Oscars saying they didn't want him to come dressed as the Dictator as they felt it would be just using the Oscars to promote his movie.
Erm, hello? What the hell are the Oscars all about!! The whole thing nowadays is just a shameless promotional thing! It might have been about acknowledging great performances and movies once upon a time, but not anymore, or they would never do or show the red carpet at all.
SBC broke through all of that with a single stunt and did it brilliantly. As for promoting his movie, hell, it worked, Twitter was ablaze within seconds of that stunt. I think all but one of the trending topics in the UK were about what had just happened, so yeah, job done.
As for whether he's funny? Meh, that's a completely subjective thing. There are people out there think that Epic Movie is hysterical, whereas I hate it with a fiery passion, so each to their own on that one.
We built this city on Rock and Roll!
Ali G's gags were great. When the show was first broadcast.
Now? Not so much. Mostly because there's no real surprise in Cohen's antics anymore. Everyone knows what he and his alter egos look like now. And that he is going to do something dressed as one of the characters.
The thing was staged from the beginning. He would have to clear the contents of the urn with security before hand, as it could have been something actually hazardous. Sure, it's Hollywood but precautions would be taken to protect everyone at the event.

my thought about SBC is that he's basically doing the same type of stuff that Andy Kaufmann Did

I find his humor basically amusing with an occasional sprinkle of hilarious, though crashing a gala in character, if only he'd tried this before.
Fortunately for you lot you didn't see the fallout from his Ali G stuff (keep in mind he was broadcast here in Britain first). Basically the kind of people he was making fun of (the white guy trying to be black) didn't understand the joke and some even saw him as a rolemodel...so far god knows how long we had people repeating his catchphrases over and over again.
So yeah, it's safe to say I hate the guy, with a freaking passion just like I hate Catherine Tate for forcing me to listen to the catchphrase "Am I bovvered" being spewed out the mouths of pre-teen kinds for atleast two years at work, I hate them both so much that I'd be more than willing to laugh while they both got dragged to the cold dark damnation of hell.

Sheesh, serious Oscars is SERIIEZ BIIZNESZ!!! Clearly...
I personally find it nice that someone treats things with a bit less starch and up-tightness and laughs at how silly the whole world can be sometimes...
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Personally, I loved Ms. Tate's turn as Lauren Cooper. But yeah I can see your point. Thankfully, we don't have actual chavs stateside to ruin it for us.

We could probably solve a lot of problems over here with a good round up and some pump-action shotguns...

Count me in the 'Not really a fan' camp.
Never been one for that style of humor. Then again, I never saw the appeal of toilet humor either.

TOTALLY staged. It IS show business folks.
Not my favorite type of humor by far, but I can understand how some would relate too it and find it funny.
Kinda sad but not unexpected for the rich guy(Ryan) to take some general heat and not get too much sympathy from the average working stiff...you know since he is rich and all.

Sorry if that sounded political. I'm not really trying to argue the plight of the Sudanese but am more incredulous at the hollow reactions of his co-hosts and those who would feel sorry for him. At the end of the day, he's still in show biz and runs a small media empire so sympathy from me is hard to come by. Not to say he doesn't work hard for it, but still it's a lot to come home to.
