What I'm excited about is the possible cross pollination to Doctor Who. I hope Star Trek fans who've never heard of Benedict Cumberbatch will check out his work in Sherlock, get hooked on some Moffat storytelling and find their way to some Matt Smith, then work their way back .

Why do the first set photos from eagerly anticipated movies like this always make the actors look silly/stupid somehow?
Don't worry I'm not really hating on Star Trek - just making a general ironic observation...

Interesting. I wonder who Cumberbatch is playing?

Clearly the holodeck has malfunctioned yet again and now Kirk and friends must face their deadliest foe: Real Simulated Evil Modern Sherlock.

Goodbye, I guess.

It's certainly easy to jump to that conclusion, particularly with him replacing Benicio del Toro.

Well, at least Sentient Holographic Moriarty will have someone to antagonize.

Certainly seems possible. He's human looking and strong enough to challenge (best?) a vulcan. His being an Augment seems likely... though I don't see why Khan would be wearing a starfleet uniform (At least the shirt is, and the pants look close enough to Spocks to also be part of one).

Possibly because they (Khan and his followers) were found naked in cryo-stasis and issued Starfleet clothing.

Probably because the special effects and digital touch-ups haven't been added yet.

No it has nothing to do with those kinds of things - obviously these are always "unfinished" scenes.
Just look at Zachary Quinto in the first photo. The moment that still photo was taken simply captured him with a very silly look on his face.
And look at the first photo from this link - behold the silly looking face of Cumberbatch.

Finnegan would be cool to see in these movies but he was clearly Kirk's nemesis so it'd be weird to see Spock fighting him directly.

Mitchell would be cool to see too but I imagine Abrams "re-imagined" universe probably would make them traveling to the edge of the galaxy fairly unlikely so no super-esper Mitchell is going to happen.

Good. Honestly, what's the point of setting up a new universe to play in if the writers are just going to rehash old stories? If I wanted to see classic Trek with better special effects, I'd just watch Star Trek Remastered.

I suppose that would indeed make sense...

Or it could be a human that is really good at hand to hand. Vulcans are stronger, but someone who can actually fight, and not whatever combat training starfleet peeps think they receive, should be able to go toe to toe with a Vulcan without being captain America.

Well, he speaks with a Britsh accent right? So we know that means the character is French...

In the shot he appears to be overpowering Spock. And not with superior martial leverage.

Sure rehashing exact stories from older shows would be a bit lame. But one could argue what's the point of setting up a new universe when you have no clue or desire to know how -either- version of Star Trek works. I think Abrams ought to just wait until Lucas dies and try his hand at "recreating" Star Wars instead. At least that's a franchise he might have a chance with. *shrugs*

Kirk held his own while fighting Spock in This Side of Paradise. He was losing but barely. He didn't fare quite so well in Amok Time but that was due to the environment, unfamiliarity with the weapons and the fact that Mccoy had doped him up. So from this I would wager that Kirk isn't quite up to fighting Spock but could hold his own for a while.

In Shore Leave Kirk fought Finnegan. It wasn't really Finnegan just a substitute but it was a long drawn out fight that Kirk finally won. Actually it was pretty much two fights because first Kirk got knocked out by Finnegan. Once he woke up he went back for seconds and managed to win.

The important part of this is afterwords when Spock asks Kirk if he enjoyed the fight Kirk says he did. That he always wanted to beat the tar out of Finnegan. Now knowing that Kirk pretty much jumps into a fight at every single opportunity this pretty much guarantees that he fought Finnegan multiple times in the past, and always lost.

If Kirk always lost to Finnegan except in a fantasy recreation of one of those fights then it follows that Finnegan is a much better fighter. If Finnegan is a better fighter than Kirk then he could likely hold his own or even beat Spock in a fight.

I really must be bored this morning.

That's because Spock is still reeling from not having access to all the powers he had as Sylar.
