What is Prometheus?

Yes, not who, but what is the shiny blue giant calling itself Prometheus in Ouroboros? By his own account, he is the mythical Olympian Titan who gave humanity the flame (and the Flame) which spurred them on to greatness, and was then punished by the god Zeus in return.

Also by his own account, however, we learn that Zeus was not really a god, but an Incarnate empowered by the Well of Furies. We also learn that Prometheus has a very antagonistic attitude towards the Well. He also has a lot of knowledge about both the Well and the Coming Storm/Battalion. So just what is he?

Given how butthurt he seems in his attitude towards the Well of Furies, and how he's rallying the troops against Cole, it seems very possible to me that he might have been the Well's chosen champion in ancient times, and was cast aside by that enigmatic font of power (perhaps in favor of Zeus?)

Could he be a member of the Battalion's alien race? One who turned against them, and now seeks to stop their Coming Storm? Just how old is he, anyway? Does he precede even beings such as Tielekku, Hequat, and Ermeeth?

Or- and here's another idea, playing off the speculation above- what if he is an embittered former Chosen of the Well, seeking revenge. He wants to destroy its current champion, Cole, and finally claim all of its power for himself. Perhaps the Coming Storm is actually coming to stop his multiversal plans of conquest, which is why he's concerned about their arrival?

We still haven't ever quite figured out what that whole destroyed Ouroboros imagery from Mender Ramiel's first mission was about, after all.

No, but he stands opposite someone who was.

And in answer to your question, no, I've no idea who he is.

Whoever he is, he's creepy. If he's not deep in contemplation of that tree he's standing next to, he's suddenly whirling around to randomly talk to players as they go past.

Creepy.

Hmmmm...

Prometheus gave fire to humanity (and the Flame to Posi)... and the main form of time travel we use in-game is the Pillar of Ice and Flame... and Prometheus was once a champion of the Well... which means the Well controls time travel?

Posi said he was chosen in the Mortimer Kal SF cutscene, which isn't entirely correct. It was directed at Manticore, but Positron dived in and got it instead.

Not sayin' you're wrong, Sam, or that this is what you were gettin' at, but this is just somethin' that irks me in-game and seein' it obliquely referenced.

As for the Prometheus speculation... I've got my theories. Mostly stuff along the lines that he did what the Well does now by first givin' fire to humanity. He's likely what the Well replaced... perhaps forcibly.

He ends up with it, one way or another. Though I suppose if Prometheus is that bada**, he could have made sure Manticore ended up with the Flame somehow, regardless of Positron's intervention.

EDIT: Another way to take the whole "I gave the Flames to Dr. Keyes" thing is to clarify as opposed to "the Freedom Phalanx STOLE it."

Meh.

Maybe Prometheus didn't care who got the power and just wanted them to go away?

Anyone have the download page link to the comics, never got around to reading them yet. I can't seem to find it (might due to fact im just waking up).

Exactly. If Prometheus didn't want Positron to have the power, he would have taken it back.

Examine what Positron did there. He literally made a grab for power, and was rewarded with more power for it because that made him worthy. Sound familiar?

Here's a hint: that's the exact same M.O. as the Well.

That supports the theory that Prometheus is a former champion of the Well.

That's pretty much how I see it. He even turns his back and gives a dismissive gesture over his shoulder.

He's also facing down and attempting to put fear into the hearts and minds of a group of villains running amok in his base. It could also be posturing.

Can Prometheus really be butthurt? What if his blue skinned humaniod form is really only how the human mind can percieve him? What if Prometheus is all butt or no butt at all? Or maybe he is simulataneously all butt and no butt and his butt state all depends on how the viewer looks at Prometheus.

And he gets quite indignant if you ask him about any of the topics he's not willing to discuss, even though he doesn't tell you what topics those are until you bring them up.

Well, lets see if I remember those mythology courses correctly.

Prometheus (a rough translation meaning fore thought) was the titan who gave fire (sometimes interpreted as science and/or the creative spark) to humanity in defiance of the gods. For this, he was chained down and is doomed to have his liver (or some other internal organs) pecked out by vultures for eternity.

You can see why this might make someone a bit bitter.

Now, If we transfer this a bit to in game lore we could say that the gods are actually the well of the furies which has been granting power to just a few over the course of who knows how long, in what appears to be a long running socio/psychological experiment. The well decides when it appears, who gets power and has been shown to be trying to manipulate those it comes in contact with.

Prometheus, meanwhile, seeing that humanity was destined for great things, decides to jump start the process a bit in defiance of the the gods (played tonight by the well of the furies.) He doesn't seem too pleased with the well's games and seems to be telling people that they can do just fine without it.

Now, the well probably isn't too happy with this but, not having a conveniently strong catspaw available at the moment, isn't really able to punish Prometheus (AKA the chained to a rock thing.) But, as soon as the well has a follower strong enough to take on big blue, it will use them to make it's displeasure known.

So what do we learn from this? Well, we could say that if we drink the Well's kool aid (take incarnate abilities) we're going to spend the rest of our lives either doing what it tells us, fighting it, or just going a bit crazy trying to do both.

Resist the Well, humanity. It might be our only hope.

Going on this, it could be Prometheus was the one who created pandora's box in the first place to give power to people without the aid of the well.
