Banes, my friends, BANES!
Banes are awesome. They're my favorite archetype next to controllers and brutes.

I'm not sure why more people don't sing the praises of the Bane!
I've been taking my Bane-Spider build through the Dark Astoria mission arcs. Wow... so much fun. And with Musculature and Reactive unlocked on him, this bane does quite well. I like the Bane for soloing hard content, and then I switch to my Huntsman build for team play.
Though I'm thinking of switching to the Degenerative tree, as that -Hitpoint and +Toxic damage look very interesting!
My level 50 Dominators:
Madame Mindbender 50 Mind/Energy
Fly Agaric 50 Plant/Thorn
Nate Nitro 50 Fire/Psi
I'd only ever tried a Huntsman before, but somewhat recently started leveling a Bane, and I have to agree, I quite like it so far. A lot of fun. Only in the mid-30s so far, but that's far enough along to be able to tell that it's gonna be a very fun ride the rest of the way.
So far, never had any interest in crabs.
Where are the Huntsmen, you ask? They're hanging out with the melee-only Blasters and petless Masterminds.
My bane's secondary build is actually a huntsman.
Now that my bane is 50 and his build is "complete", he's mostly based around his own performance, what with taking only TTM and TTA as far as the support powers go. He's got softcapped ranged defense to take alpha and also has a very large bag of tricks up his sleeve that allows him to support the team in other ways while also soloing an AV if need be.
With the crabs forcing players to have that backpack even while on a bane build, I had to go to a different build. So I went with a support wolf and took double leadership in everything except tactics. I can stay at range and shoot enemies up, and also I have Bayonette which is an awesome power. There's just something cool about meticulously running down cimerorans and stabbing them with the pointy end of my assault rifle. Though he doesn't have nearly the single target DPS my bane build has.

Comparing a huntsman to a petless mastermind? I'm taking that as a joke if he means effectiveness, because it must be. If he means rarity, that also doesn't match my experience. I've yet to ever come across one of these petless masterminds, but already teamed up with two other huntsman in the last couple of weeks from just random PuG's. That's significant considering how rarely I see other spiders period.
I took one look at the DPA of the crab attacks and went "blech". Considering I like to go for high recharge builds, bad DPA is a big warning sign for me. That pretty much made my decision to stay huntsman/bane. I find huntsman the nice middle ground capable of good single target and AoE.

Already got up to Sister Solaris's arc with it. Not looking forward to that last mission.
Wow! You actually have an incarnate Petless mastermind?!? And it's effective?! My hat's off to you, sir.
Whoops, been a while since I checked this board. Look at all the Crab threads!

Because crabs > Banes forever and always? :P
I'm currently working up the funds for a bane, right after my DA/DB tanker.

My experience with a bane vs. crabspider was one where I was still using SOs on both of them...think I 12ish. My bane would get mezzed to crud and back in ITF when Rommy would rez, but when I played my crab, Rommy didn't mezz her any when he'd rez. I'm not sure why either. But to me, a crabspider is like a Timex watch, they can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. However, I have not experienced playing an IO'd and incarnated bane build. But, my secondary build on my crabspider will be made into one.

I'm not impressed.. you're just another generic Incarnate. Haven't you people figured out yet that once you become an incarnate you just homogenize? Everyone has the nuke, everyone has the +levels, everyone has the pets... honestly, your main powers just become filler until Judgement comes back up.. Oh look honey, another 50+x doing +4/x8 content... snore.

Ammo switching for Dual Pistols was my idea:

That would require me to take my hand off of the mouse. )-:
I use that for lots of stuff, even managing inventory mid-fight. I can't justify using the number pad for reasons that don't amount to much of a benefit (if any). |
Buy a Razor Naga mouse. It has a 12-key pad on the left side so all the keypad functions can be used without taking your hand off the mouse.
I agree with what was said about Blasters up-thread...that's why I bought the thing.

+4x8 petless Mastermind, eh? Purple minions? Being +3 in Dark Astoria against "+4s" will be yellow minions, which yeah, I can believe that, but that's really just +1.
LOL that is funny since both my huntsman and petless mastermind can handle 4/8 so not bad company to keep.

woooo incarnates!

But, considering that the dozen-ish 50+3s I have by now all play quite differently, despite their Incarnate powers, I'm gonna go ahead and say that statements like this:
...are false. Laughably incorrect. Hogwash. Removing Judgement from my bar would obviously reduce the character's capabilities, but not by nearly as much as removing Fireball, or Assassin Strike, or Foot Stomp, or Crushing Uppercut, or (more relevant to this thread) Shatter, or Crowd Control. Removing Lore would affect me much less than removing Call Reinforcements and Summon Blaster. Et cetera.
Not meaning to derail but...
Why the Huntsman hate? lol
They seem as viable as any other.
Havent been able to play CoH in awhile, but I went the Huntsman/Bane route for stealthier mode and if I remember correctly (without incarnates):
- 5x range AOEs
- 1x range ST
- 2x melee attacks just because
- 2x debuffs
Throw in cap S/L and range defense with pets and team buffs...Ive always enjoyed it.
How is it comparable to a petless MM?

I never said anything was wrong with Huntsmen, Blappers or petless Masterminds. Just look at my avatar! (-:
And knowing how petless Masterminds go, I know what they can do. They can do +1x8. I don't think they can do +4x8. Not unless they run around picking off individual targets with ranged attacks over the course of three months per mission, at least.
The analogy I was making is that, much like Blappers and petless Masterminds, Huntsmen are unnecessarily avoiding powers for the sake of lulz. "Here's a useful power. Want it?" "No. Need lulz."
No matter how you slice it, Huntsman is intentionally gimping a character. It's not bad, don't get me wrong, since I loves me some petless Masterminds. But if anyone tries to say "this Soldier would not be better with Crab or Bane powers," we're gonna have words.
