Statesman, alive and, well....
I called Issue 25 in the announcement thread. 25 is the silver anniversary after all, you know they're gonna have something special in mind.
"You don't lose levels. You don't have equipment to wear out, repair, or lose, or that anyone can steal from you. About the only thing lighter than debt they could do is have an NPC walk by, point and laugh before you can go to the hospital or base." -Memphis_Bill
We will honor the past, and fight to the last, it will be a good way to die...
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he never came back, considering the original "owner" of the character is no longer with the company, and I've gotten the impression that not everybody on the team was a Statesman fan, if you know what I mean.
I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't back, in some fashion, before the end of the SSA. Maybe not at all in the same manner as the character is now - could be as a ghost, maybe his body is taken over in a more permanent fashion by the Well, but something that has the model back, if not the same character, right away.

While it was extremely rare, there WERE people that got killed and stayed dead in the comics. Bucky and Uncle Ben.
And now... Bucky apparently "got better" like John Cleese. He stayed dead for a long, long, long time, though.
And for all I know, Uncle Ben will be returning on a retconned cloud of Converted Rice in a moment or two.
But I think States will show back up again... and we will be shocked, shocked that there is gambling going on in this place.
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
But I think States will show back up again... and we will be shocked, shocked that there is gambling going on in this place.

Dun dun dunnnnn....
My wager? This is a feint kill. Statesman won't stay dead the entire arc, and it'll be another major character who bites it at the end.
"I have something to say! It's better to burn out then to fade away!"
He'll come back at some point via typical handwave and be "upgraded" with an all new look and powers.

And they're not lying.

This is my assumption on the chain of events.
1) Statesman dies.
2) Lord Recluse helps stop the Well from enslaving mankind, starting with you.
3) Emperor Cole becomes Statesman.
4) The Well is Destroyed after we turn on it(after the final slot of the incarnate system is unlocked.)
5) The Incarnate system stops receiving updates as an advancement path.
6) City of Heroes 2 is announced.

If this is the case then the devs are outright lying to us when they say they're replacing Statesman in the game world entirely.
And they're not lying. |
The other theory I've heard and could see happening is the return of Hero 1, and him replacing Statesman.
"I have something to say! It's better to burn out then to fade away!"
Statesman will be in the Freedom Phalanx infirmary, on total life support and quickly slipping away. Suddenly, another Marcus Cole from an entirely different reality comes bursting in, and he hooks Statesman up to a life transference machine...
This so comes to mind

I can't wait to kill statesman...I really hope that it isnt like the scripted prompt in part 3 but instead is a final battle where the player gets to kill off his lumpy spandexed butt!
Will there be a Sig Story Arc Volume 2? I am hope it will be the race for Zeus Incarnate.

Clones.... It always comes down to clones.
Freedom
Blueside: Knight'Hawk, lvl 50, Scrapper
Yellowside: Dark'Falcon (Loyalist), lvl 20, Blaster
That Stinging Sensation #482183
Also, Manticore kills him. Again.
Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...
No, you're misunderstanding. They said whoever they kill off will be taken out. What I am guessing is that Statesman is NOT the ultimate target of "Who will die?", but someone else entirely. This is supposed to make it look like Statesman. He'll be brought back/revealed to have not been dead/some other random event, and then some one ELSE will bite it. That person would be the 'completely removed' element, as opposed to Statesman.

I yawned.
I was hoping for soemthing more. Instead I go this...
It may allow toons to shine more...but in the end...Predictable!
I wanted Manti to die....for more interesting toons to come to the forefront...
Instead I got fluff...
Who cares?

Okay, I know I'm not the first that thought it. I maybe the first to post about it (but I doubt it...) He is coming back.
What major character in any comic or comic related material stays dead? Gold star to the sleepy guy in the back that raised his hand. None. Not a one stays dead.
So, the real question is when/how are they bringing Statesy back and what does it say about Incarnate storylines further down the road?!?
