Happy Solstice!

Today's the Winter Solstice... so for we in the northern hemisphere, that can only mean one thing: Summer's on its way! Let's celebrate and welcome the warm weather and the banishment of the dank and great stuff!

Why is it happy? Did you just wash and wax it, get it an oil change, or something?

Farewell is like the end

And there you'll always be

When did the Solstice become the "deepest part of the winter"?
I mean, I'm in New York City, it's 10:15 at night and it's 61 degrees out.
Global warming???

Time to start the one year countdown clock until the big end of the world party. Woot!

Expect numerous 2012 disaster specials on History, Discovery, TLC, Science, SciFi and slowly creep into mainstream channels as filler, panicking the population into a self fulfilling prophecy.

We're at the point when the Earth is farthest from the Sun, when the nights are at their longest and the days are at their shortest. Now the nights will begin to shorten and the days will lengthen.

In my tradition, it's to do with the light returning, nothing to do with the temperature. Typically, January and February can be much more bitter than Yule.

It was raining in New York like it was a summer storm! And all while I was driving in very dark, out of the way, wooded places that I'd never been to before, haha! Very fun!

As much as I love the night... I'm welcoming the days getting longer!!

Hope everyone has a great solstice!

SciFi has been airing End of the World shows for several years now. If its not "global Warming" its "Giant Meteor" or "The Core of the Earth Stopped Spinning and We're All Going to go FooP!" or something. But they've been showing that stuff for years.

Now, the Discovery Channel, I like their hypothetical "What Would Happen Over Time if All the Humans Just Mysteriously Vanished" shows. Only they can come up with something like a Flish, a tree swinging Octopus, or a mind controlling mold.

Ok, them and some guy that really would like to write for a SciFi show.

The Earth is farthest from the sun during winter in the Southern Hemisphere, but axial tilt is the reason for the season. The perihelion of Earth's orbit will occur some time in the first several days after the new year, but unfortunately, nobody but astronomers celebrate that.

Happy Christmas, everyone! And the same to the pagans etc.

I love the fact that there's loads of different celebrations on during the winter months. It's like the whole world is having a party!

Hellions might celebrate it too! Maybe with a meal at Peri Peri

And for those who don't grok astronomical terms, perihelion is when the Earth is closest to the Sun. Next time is Jan 5th, 2012 around 1AM GMT. That's roughly 5 million kilometers closer to the Sun than at Aphelion next July 5th. The Sun is roughly 6.9% brighter at perihelion than at aphelion.
