Doctor Who Big-Screen Movie in the Works
I'd do a prequel of sorts with a young doctor when he first steals the TARDIS and runs away whose misadventures culminates into his meeting with his first wife. The Doctor should be William Hartnell (possibly Patrick Troughton) inspired but more brash and naive, like Professor X in the X-Men First Class.
The villain should be the Master and a new alien race, and no Daleks should appear in it...I mean it...really...you heard me...or else.
Or it needs to be a multi-doctor bonanza. Something like the 5 Doctors only with the budget to make it actually fantastic instead of mediocre (not that I don't love it, but for example no things like the 'cliff' scene where Sarah Jane gently rolls down a slope and 'is in DANGER')
Or a Doctor Who and Inspector Spacetime crossover. It's about time.
Seriously, though, I think that Innovator's got a good idea for not having to worry too much about continuity. I also wouldn't mind a return of Paul McGann with a stand-alone 8th Doctor movie. Ignoring the "Expanded Universe" of books and audio dramas (which conflict with each other, anyway), it'd be pretty easy to have a stand-alone 8th Doctor movie that still works with canon.

Just to be explicit, when Yates is talking about "a radical transformation", he clarifies, "Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch."
That might mean that the movie will somehow tie in with Matt Smith's departure from the role since the producers are looking for something in two to three years, i.e. about the length of a good run for a Doctor if Smith stays through the 50th anniversary. It might also mean that they're going to give Doctor Who the same kind of treatment Ron Moore gave Battlestar Galactica. Or maybe they'll pick up where the Peter Cushing films from the sixties left off...

After seeing the horrible "Hitchhiker's Guide" film, I'd be a little bit concerned. The zany, flippant nature of the Doctor may not translate well to the big screen. Will audiences who have heard of "Doctor Who" but never seen it understand the appeal of the character? But Yates did a great job with the Potter films overall, so we can hope he will do as good a job.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Great. Peter Cushing. The DWho-over.
I would have a very difficult time accepting a big-screen version that did not at least co-exist with the TV version.
If Matt Smith regenerates into the actor who plays the Doctor in the movie version, with that Doctor being acknowledged as the 12th, and in turn THAT actor regenerates into the actor who plays the 13th Doctor on TV.....then I could run with it. But if it's a "not related at all, totally different continuity" type thing, then I dunno....

It seems the BBC has learnt nothing.
I was quite excited when I heard it was David Yates directing because I thought he had been very respectful of the Potter source material. So I was shocked when the next quote said "the show needs quite a radical transformation". This will not be getting any of my money.
More disappointingly, I suspect this movie maybe the BBCs answer to the question "what shall we do for the 50th anniversary"

Moffat may be keeping his plans for the anniversary close to his chest, but he's continued to mention the topic in recent interviews.
I like the idea of it being a bit of a prequel with a young 1st Doctor. They could have the young Doctor and Master play off each other like a young Professor X and Magneto. And we could have the scene of the Doctor "borrowing" the Tardis.
The only problem with this is if they decide to regenerate their Doctor for a future movie, which wouldn't be a huge deal, since it only throws off the current regeneration count.

I however predict that at least 89.5% of current Dr. Who fans would not like how it turns out for at least 17 different reasons.

Variety reports:
'Potter' helmer, BBC working on pic of sci-fi TV series
By Adam Dawtrey
LONDON -- "Harry Potter" director David Yates is teaming up with the BBC to turn its iconic sci-fi TV series "Doctor Who" into a bigscreen franchise.
Yates, who directed the last four Potter films, told Daily Variety that he is about to start work on developing a "Doctor Who" movie with Jane Tranter, BBC Worldwide's L.A.-based exec VP of programming and production.
"We're looking at writers now. We're going to spend two to three years to get it right," he said. "It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena."
"Doctor Who" follows the adventures across space and time of a super-intelligent alien in human form, who battles a variety of cosmic bad guys aided by plucky human companions.
"The notion of the time-travelling Time Lord is such a strong one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or time," Yates said.
The series airs Stateside on BBC America.
Yates made clear that his movie adaptation would not follow on from the current TV series, but would take a completely fresh approach to the material.
"Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch," he said.
Yates and Tranter are looking for writers on both sides of the Atlantic.
"We want a British sensibility, but having said that, Steve Kloves wrote the Potter films and captured that British sensibility perfectly, so we are looking at American writers too," he explained.
