IMO, in pretty much every movie where Will is the center of attention as the star, the movie descends into absurd drek within five minutes. On the other hand, when he's in an ensemble cast, where he isn't the focus of the story, he can be really good.
Thats true for most comedians though. Jack black was great in Tropic thunder, but terrible in most of the movies that he carries the lead in. Adam Sandler is better in movies where there are other strong actors to reign in his extemes.

As for typecast breaking movies...Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love

Jay Doherty: Yes, there was this one night that I was ready to go home but had to drop the browns off at the super bowl before I left for home. While on the throne it hit me. I stayed for a few more hours and that why we have the pain pads in the game.

Of the three actors, John Leguizamo would have been the one I'd have picked as most likely to do a cross-dressing movie. I'd have chosen Wesley Snipes, and then Patrick Swayze before John.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

Jim Caviezel ~ Passion of the Christ

He has said that he has had a hard time getting good roles since he appeared in it. Apparently Mel Gibson told him it might hurt his career.

Luckily he has bounced back with Outlander which I liked, the Prisoner, and of course Person of Interest.

Brad Pit in Kalifornia.

Yes. She's almost unrecognizable in her role on Pan Am.

Bryan Cranston. He went from being the buffoonish dad in Malcolm in the Middle to being a badass criminal in Breaking Bad.

Robert De Niro in MIDNIGHT RUN.
Jim Carrey in THE TRUMAN SHOW.
Val Kilmer in TOMBSTONE. (Especially after movies like REAL GENIUS, TOP SECRET, etc...)
Elijah Wood in SIN CITY (*shudder*)

Ironically, most of my favorite actors have a HUGE diversity of roles, so typecasting them is damn near impossible.

Just want to say (and I think this very thread supports it) that audiences don't type-cast actors, producers do.

It also annoys me when the news agencies run stories about "actor/actress from successful cult genre X performing in mainstream genre Y" because they will inevitably do a bit about "fans of cult genre X coming to watch genre Y" and it will usually be pretty condescending. Whereas the simple truth is that people will follow actors they enjoy.

This is a song about a super hero named Tony. Its called Tony's theme.

I can't believe no one listed 1989's Batman. I remember the nerd rage over Keaton as the Caped Crusader.

You're forgetting his role as badass dentist, Tim Watley, on Seinfeld.

Geena Davis as an action star? Check out Long Kiss Goodnight, where she out bad@$$es Samuel You-know-what-goes-here Jackson.

For that matter, her ex-husband Jeff Goldblum in The Fly.

There was a reason Sasha Grey was the "it" girl in porn, other than reputation and willingness to do the most hardcore stuff. She proved she had great screen presence outside of the porn she did through her stints as a host for G4. Then she did a couple of indy flicks to show she had real acting ability as well. What's shocking is the mainstream actually giving her a chance. Regardless, she earned it, there's no denying that.

Harrison Ford in "what lies beneath". Seeing Han Solo/Indiana Jones as an evil man was unsettling.
