Exploring the Haunted House

I've loved Halloween since I was a wee tyke, so I love the haunted house in the Dr. Kane trial so very, very much -- but unfortunately, every time I've gone through the trial, everyone has rocketed through much too quickly for me to take in the decor the way I wanted to.

Will the set pieces here be added to the Mission Architect at some point? It'd be great to get to explore it more slowly at some point, or even to set a few new spooky missions there...

yah, just don't exit the mission, you can backtrack easy The only minor hitch is that all friendly NPCs will disappear and/or collapse. The front will be empty except for the dog, but otherwise everything is explorable

This is my problem in general with introducing new team content that can't be resolved solo. I simply can't immerse myself in the story in the same way and I'm not really sure how that can ever be changed.

Cutscenes and text boxes are one way to go, but once you've seen these then you don't really want to see them again, and its a problem if some of the team has seen them, some haven't, and the rest just want to go kill something.

At the very least though, everything should be solo-able, even if its suicidal to try.

I can do a slow run with you - we could get a couple of fillers to start, and not bother with the end fight.

I know the first couple of times I tried it with just one friend, the others on the team would zip through it.

On time four or five a new person asked if we wanted to get Black Whip. Since the whole Dr. Kane thing is new, I said sure. I didn't even know what the Black Whip was at the time.

Now I always ask if someone hasn't done the trial before, so we can go slowly and explore the whole thing.

Ahh, thanks! I'd assumed you couldn't backtrack once the mission was over.

Still, I'd love to see these set pieces available for use in the Mission Architect. CoH needs more spooky set pieces.

They did such great work on this map. I really wish it had been duplicated as a Halloween zone, like the ski chalet. Then we could all wander around it at our leisure, chat with the NPCs, and generally have fun with it. It's far too fabulous to be locked behind a mission.

Agreed. I love the map and I wish it was available in a non-team environment.

At least this one can be soloed, all you need is 3 free accounts to pad the team so you can start it.

And to think it wasn't too long ago that they introduced new difficulty settings so you didn't have to find fillers anymore... Ah well.

Not only is it locked behind a mission, it's also locked behind a mission that will only be available for a couple of weeks every year

Yeah, it is a very beautiful map. I'm pretty sure I recognized the basement from Manticore's mansion though.

Manticore's basement has the sandy caverns that turn into Praetorian lab map.

You're thinking of Dollface's decrepit mansion from the redside tutorials which is a rundown version of Manticore's mansion with a mad scientist lab in the basement. Also, Dollface's mansion has the upstairs bedroom.

You all realise I want the wolf/dog as a pet now! He's so cute! (sorry doglover here!) Could this mean we get animals and an animal trainer/ beastmaster MM? ;-)

Well, don't get your hopes up for a MM set, or anything at all, really, but you can type [Wolf Pet] in-game to see a power that would summon a (nontargetable) version of the wolf. The most popular theory at the moment is that this power will eventually be purchasable on the Market.

Except I haven't been in Dollface's mansion yet.

I was referring purely to the "sandy caverns" as you label them. It's the same chipset.

Well, closely related...

Dollface's mansion has no sandy caverns.

Manticore's mansion has sandy caverns.

Kane's mansion has spookified Cimeroran caverns. And the Cimeroran caverns are ruinified sandy caverns.

I only ran it a couple of times and I don't know what you are talking about when you mention Black Whip, please explain. (not being sarcastic I really don't know what Black Whip is)

An easter egg thrown in to the beginning of the trial, before you enter the mansion. You gotta talk to various people to have him appear.

I found the bored people but never the person that starts the easter egg. I had a nice, patient stranger join our trio but after a few minutes of searching I started feeling bad for him and we went on into the mansion.

Completely agree. It's my favorite zone looks-wise now.

Reading this thread makes me so glad I've gotten to know some people who are regular teammates. My first couple of runs through the haunted house, we took our time, enjoyed the sights, spoke with all the click-able NPCs (there are several), explored the graveyards outside the house, found the side mission, heck we even stopped to talk about the creepy art hanging on the walls. When the Abomination came, we all had each others backs, worked together as a team, and got the badge.

My third run through was on a random PUG. Good grief, these guys were acting like they had ants in their pants! They were in such a rush to get to the end, they simply ran past most of the zombies throughout the house. I felt sure this was because they'd done the haunted house many times, but nope--when asked, it was the first time for two of them! Later on, it dawned on me that this is probably the way most people play City of Heroes: missing 90 percent of the game in their mad rush to "experience" the game. When the Abomination came, it was everyone for themselves. When I lay defeated on the ground, unable to put holds on the GM or defend my team, someone actually typed, "Don't worry, I can solo this." The GM then proceeded to stomp him flat. Over and over. Needless to say, the PUG did not get the badge.

Anyway, for my fourth run through the haunted house, I waited until a few of my regular teammates were back around.
