State of Average Costumes

I frequently offer criticism of various aspects of the game, so it seems fair that I should pay compliments when they are due as well.

IMO the attractiveness of the average costume I see on players in-game has dramatically improved over the past year, especially within the past 6 months. I blame two things:

- People can now buy independent parts, making even previously reluctant players more likely to buy (two friends of mine who joined as free players bought parts before leaving the character creation screen

- The recent costume packs have been really, really good.

So, kudos from me. I can't speak for everyone but this is one thing that I really like about this game. I can't wait for you to take my money from me with the next costume pack.

Agreed!
Although, I can't say I felt this area was lacking beforehand (not that you're saying it was), things have indeed continued to improve with costumes!

Just the amount of variety, alone (also providing more and more combinations) continues to make this aspect better and better!

I have to say though, that just the past few times I was in-game, I noticed more costumes that made me take a second, longer interested look!
Coincidence or not... I support this positive post!

I don't know if it is just me, but I've found myself picking up my old character-watching hobby (especially around the tailor) that I can't recall having done much of over the past year or so.

Absolutely! I remember something like a year ago, looking around me and thinking, "Man... were these people dared to push the random button and accept whatever came out?"

Nowadays about nine out of ten outfits I see are at least identifiable. Even if I don't personally like it, I can tell what they were going for, and that's a drastic improvement by itself. Plus, some of the costumes I see are flat out amazing. And the enormous variety of looks you can make is just incredible.

Kicking butt is one thing, but kicking butt and looking awesome? That's priceless

I have noticed a steady increase in the number of times I have sent "Nice costume" tells to folks I have seen and/or teamed with lately. And yes, there was a dirth of good costumes at one point not too far in the past.

I know, right?

I took that the other night. I saw them walking toward the intersection and I was like, no, really? I couldn't have forgiven myself for not screencapping that one

Oh, that's awesome! I was wondering if it was staged or randomly spotted!
Haha, very nice!

Tonight I got a tell from somebody telling me how epic one of my alts looked. That alt was wearing the samurai chestplate paired with the Circle of thorns skirt (great combo!), and wearing the ascension radiance boots, gloves, and headpiece, and plain ascension decor shoulders. I love these new pieces and all the mix-and-match we can do!

Perhaps it's the Hellions Beatles tribute band?

Hey they may be gang members but they sing a mean version of 'Can't buy me love'.

I have one costume that I get a lot of comments on, I entered it in the mmorpg.com contest. I received a comment on it there too. As far as I know it was not even in the top ten.

As for the state of costumes in the game, I can't agree. I have come to the conclusion that my eyes must function in a different manner than others. I went through every costume in that thread, and there were a few that made my eyes want to bleed. Which was part of the reason I stopped participation in costume contests to start with.

Yea, while I'm thrilled that people like the new pieces they offer, they (almost universally) seem busy and overly elaborate for my tastes. I can't help but think a lot of heroes must sound like a bag of loose coins wrapped in sleigh bells walking down the street.

While I will freely admit that the quality of the costume creator itself is greater than it has ever been before, I have honestly not noticed the things people use it for to be any better. Most people I see are either using Full Set Something or a jumble of unrelated pieces. It's been a while since I could deduce a logical approach to which piece is selected for what category in most of the people I run across in-game. Those that post on the Best Costume Designs thread are usually much more aesthetically pleasing even when I don't like their thematic, but what I see in-game has not changed. People just use newer parts, but just as randomly as they used the old parts.

Accapella, too. They were actually on their way to a performance at the train station in that picture. They had gathered around in a circle to warm up their voices, when some hero saw them and... well that was the end of that career.

I have also noticed how much the costume creator has improved after being away for a year and coming back this summer.

I have a certain respect for people that can come-up with interesting and unique costumes without having to use purchased costume pieces. And I haven't gotten around to buying many yet, as a lot of the are simply too busy for my taste and/or don't fit any current concept.

In fact, I've had tons of compliments on almost all of my character's outfits, and all of them have used basic parts, the occasional unlockable part (Roman armor, or the Rularuu Sword) or Vet reward (Belly Shirts, Day Job pieces). Even the simplest outfit can get compliments if color-coordinated and accessorized properly.

Noble Savage said that they'll have some news about that at a later date.

I use plenty of old stuff!
I'm not saying I wouldn't like a lot of things to be updated, but there's plenty of old stuff that looks perfectly fine and result in costumes that I get complimented on regularly and, more importantly, that I love!

Also, Sam, I hear ya and I think it is largely a case of happenstance.
I was recently around the Virtue Steel Canyon Icon, two nights in a row, and I just happened to see a number of outfits that made me do that second-take look further at them.

It's all out there...the good and the bad!

I've not noticed any improvement in costuming over the past year. I'd say the costumes are as good or bad as ever. I'm no fan of the current trend towards overly-ornate armor. It's telling my most complimented costume is a basic Golden Age Tanker tights look. Something odd is going on in costuming when tights become something special.

Simple costumes with strong themes are my favorites, and is normally how I do costumes these days.

If that's directed at me then that's why I said new stuff as an *option* so people can choose to use either new or old or both. Goblin Queen uses ONLY the old Metal top with skin but if a new one came out that had better definition and fixed a glaring bug then I'd update the look (probably). I have many characters that use old stuff, I'd never recommend having it removed. People are still bitter over some hairstyles, skirts, jackets, etc. that have gone missing over the years for newer items.

For some odd reason, I missed the "or new" part and was just thinking that you were saying that the new stuff rocks and the old stuff shouldn't even be used if you want to look good at all, hahaha...
Not that I took it as that extreme from you! I just thought you were saying that the old stuff didn't hold up!
My apologies!!
Ignore all of that from me!
Haha
(although, I don't think I said anything bad, at least! I just -mistakenly- thought that I needed to stick up for the old stuff, haha!)

One reason I've not bothered to get the Ascendent armor pieces. Moar tights!
