according to Spad_EU in another thread using /r can be used by free players to reply to tells, for the correct syntax see the quote below

this should drastically help improve the communication between free and premium/VIP players, but we need to spread the word about it

On it.

If this works... what a boon!

Oh this is wonderful news, and I'm being incredibly non-sarcastic about this. I will be sure to spread the news about /r. I'll send tells and at the end write (To reply, type /r <message)", should be much more simple in syntax than t/ name(COMMA) message.

Not sure why the backspace button just automatically uses /t when you could just /r and do the same thing. Or maybe it's for when you've got two people sending you tells and you don't want a mistell because someone else messaged you before pressing send.

So there we have it, free players can reply to tells after all and it didn't cost the devs any work time to do it. It would've been nice if you could send tells to server and global friends but eh, I can deal for now.

according to the default keymapping backspace should be mapped to reply function

if its not working you could always just rebind backspace for /r

Did it work?

For the most user-friendly result just get the F2Per to c/p this:

Code:
/bind BACKSPACE "beginchat "/r ""

Pretty sure the default does use /tell.

Backspace is bound to the equivalent of "/beginchat /tell LastPersonWhoSentMeATell, "

The reason is that /r is prone to mistells. Imagine the following situation.

RLFriend: Hi!
Me: /r Heya!
RLFriend: How's it going?
Me: /r Long and embarrassing story about recent events that takes a while to type.

Now imagine, right before you hit enter on the last part, you get:

RandomPerson: lft?

But don't react fast enough. Whoops, your last /r just sent your long and embarrassing story to RandomPerson...

Does /tl also work for freebies? /tl is "send a tell to the last person I sent a tell to". I'm about to head off for work and won't return for many hours, so hopefully someone has confirmed or denied /r and /tl in-game with a free account by the time I get back! If not, will do so myself and report in.

Is it working for completely Free players (i.e.; have made zero purchases on the Market)? If they've made even one purchase of points, they would have access to private tells.

Just tested: apparently not. When I try to /r message a VIP player that sends a totally free account a tell, I get the message "You do not have permission to use this command. Please upgrade to VIP or unlock Reward Level 2."

That account is a true free account with zero purchases.

/bind BACKSPACE "beginchat "/r ""

Worked for a brand new created free account that was sent a test message.

I remember something to that effect happening a few years ago...until the devs fixed it. Maybe somehow the BACKSPACE key got rebound to the /r instead of what it is now? *shrugs* don't remember heh.

It also works for me with a brand new free account I just created. It doesn't work for a free account I created a few weeks ago. Not sure why yet.

Now that this is on the boards, expect it to get fixed.

Edit: What Z said.

personally i think its fine as is, free players cannot spam tells, they can only reply to tells, which is what ive seen in at least a dozen threads between a 1-2 weeks pre freedom and some post freedom requesting that free players at least have the ability to reply to tells

This is a good thing, not a bad thing. Let free players reply to tells, for ****'s sake.

It may not be WAI, but should be WAD. To be specific - if the limitations on chat are to keep the spammers at bay, /r is not usable by spammers, and can only be used if someone sends a tell like "lft?" Improves the free player experience to the point of "hey, I want more into this" without "why would I spend any money"

The only reason for blocking it would be if some interaction or misuse of a slash command (directly or through another account) can set the "lastperson" and thus be used for originating tells.

I would love for free players to be able to use /r. I think it would do a lot to cut down on the local and broadcast spam of people organizing invites and whatnot.

What's the worst case? someone whose costume I complimented turns out to be a gold seller and I start getting ads? That's what /ignore is for.

I see no downside to this, so please reconsider.
