Not who I would've pegged for reviving Trek on TV, but I don't think he's the worst choice to do it. It's obvious from Family Guy and American Dad that MacFarlane loves Star Trek, but he doesn't take it as seriously as most Trekkies do.

That's why I'd actually be in favor of him giving it a shot. He loves the series, so he'd treat it with respect; but he'd have enough of a sense of humor to poke fun at it every now and then.

I think it's very important to have a healthy disdain for things you love. It keeps things in perspective and lets you push the envelope in surprising ways. One of my main complaints with the new Dr. Who series was that it seemed like every other episode I had to sit through some speech about how amazing, magical, and tragic the Doctor is.

And boy does THAT get old fast.

That could be a good or a bad thing.

Some of the Trekkies I've met...well...let's just say I've met them and I'd like to keep it at that.

Now yeah, if this turns into the 1960's Batman of Trek, we have a problem. But all of the series were better for the bits of humor injected in (intentionally or otherwise).

Re: the topic

Yes to: Family Guy ending
No to: Seth MacFarlane having to do anything with Star Trek

1) He is a good businessman. He will put out a show that will sell. That, above all else, is why he's still doing Family Guy, and why that show was *brought back*, mind, after being cancelled, and that after 3 years!

2) He's fan savvy. He will do what they require him to do to keep them fans.

3) His comments indicate a respect for what Trek is, and what it is not. It is drama that transcends the show, it's genre. It is not a ton of fart jokes and such.

Those things mean that he would actually be a good Trek producer, you ask me. He's not stupid, in fact, he's quite brilliant. Brilliance would be a good Trek thing. His perfectionist mentality (as indicated by most voices he does himself because he doesn't trust anyone else to do them the way he wants them done) would disallow him from pulling stupid into the show.

I'd be ok with it. I'm not sure anyone's gonna 'hand him the keys', but I think it isn't a terrible idea at all.

Then again, fart jokes never get old...

But...Khan wasn't even white. (Yes I know you're referencing the Joker, but...)

I figure MacFarlane thinks he has a shot because there are already other people trying to pitch ideas for a new Star Trek series. He's obviously a great fan of the franchise and must already know some people associated with it based on his cameo in Enterprise if nothing else.

It'd be interesting if he manages to get something going with this. He certainly wouldn't be the worse choice by far.

I think it's nice to know he cares about the 300 employees who work on Family Guy.

If he's smart about it he could probably not only get the lead job for the Star Trek show for himself but carry over many of those 300 people with him. I'm sure plenty of those people do generic enough jobs that would apply to both a live-action TV show and/or a cartoon.

Agreed. I think seeing Seth use his "serious" side in a Trek venture could be interesting, and possibly a good angle for a new Trek series. I'd be willing to give him a shot.

As for the 300 in the Family Guy employ, he's already talking about making another animated series. If he gets green lit, he can simply finish Family Guy the season before the new show launches, and just transition the crew over to working on the new project.

Well, since Simpsons is going to most likely end on the 24th season, he would have no reason to end Family Guy. They could just make Sunday nights MacFarlane night and be done with it.

And I wonder if the Star Trek would be free of overbearing political soapboxing?

Trek's always been a show to address certain social situations, from racism and nationalism to euthanasia. That being said, politics (or at least some of their base concepts) have also been used as points of contention in Trek.

There's a difference between that and the stuff that tends to happen in Family Guy. Case in point, the episode where Brian and Stewie travel back to the beginning of WWII. There's a part where there's a campaign button for a pair of candidates from the '08 election on one of the Nazis. That is what I meant by overbearing.

I don't think such a concept would fit in with Trek, so I think it's safe to say that something so... direct would probably not be a part of it

Umm...
The Simpsons are gonna be around for Season #25, actually...

Now on topic...

I'll admit, I've never really been a fan of any of MacFarlane's animated projects. Could he do decent for Trek? Maybe. I've seen a couple of his interviews and he seems to be a serious person, when it comes to business. He might be able to pull it off.

Thank you for the time...

I did say, "Most likely". Last I had heard was that Fox was only interested in a 24th season. This was with the whole paycut/no merchandising monies fiasco with the six main VAs.
