This needs to be fixed.
The mouse cursor changing to a hand as you pass it over them is another clue.

I'm not saying that it's impossible to figure out, but there's really no reason not to make it as obvious as the other forms of travel.
Well in fairness to her friend...
I am going to get a friend of mine to play once Freedom is live. She has never played a video game, let alone an MMO. Unless you count the games on iphone.
Because it is going to be a real learning curve for her, I'm opting to spend $15 right off the bat, to turn her into Premium, just so we can communicate without trouble.
She wouldn't even understand if I told her the game used QWE controls for movement. So, she'll be Premium level, but so will anyone that spends $5 or more in the store, regardless of past familiarity with the game.
Premium (for now) can be seen as someone with at least 'some' prior experience with the game. This will cease to be the case once the Freebers get here though.

'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.
She should have paid attention to the bit in the new Tutorial mission where door-clicking was explained.

I always just went with I was shaking the guys hand on my way out. As hands meet in the general vicinity that my blue hand would appear (over his crotch most often) in real life.

Honestly, I wish they'd fix the need to foot massage the riot cops at the hazard zone gates for my benefit. That wasn't always like that - years ago you could click on their torsos or heads and it worked fine. Then after some release or other it shifted down, and has been that way ever since.
There are a lot of "click on door" things in this game that irritate me. For example, why are so many doors such that I must only click on closed doors to pass through them? Why are only some doors like this? Why do I have to wait for a train to arrive to chose my destination, forcing me to stand there staring at the train door, waiting for it to arrive? (I realize that this is a special case of not being able to click on an "open door". The fact that this "door" has a long open period and a short closed period attached to opening a pick list makes it particularly obnoxious.)
I would like to see all these things made simpler and more user friendly. I imagine a new player encountering these things and wondering, "if this is how doors work, what on earth is the meat of the game like?"

Some people will need specific instructions not clues.
Letting someone TP in using find contact and leaving them to figure out how to leave through the wide open door that doesn't work is weird. |
Maybe the devs can have a floating coin over the SWAT guy with an arrow and the words "Click on me to leave the zone" in flashing neon.
The fact that players who have gotten that far should already know that a blue hand appears when they can click on something makes me think that detailed instructions on how to leave a zone are a little ridiculous.
It is NOT difficult to make the connection between "The blue hand means I can click on this to do something" and "The blue hand appearing over the SWAT guy means I click on him to leave". Or at least it's logical to me.
If you make instructions TOO detailed and specific, you go from helping new players to insulting their intelligence. I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I wouldn't be too inclined to keep playing a game that thinks I'm too stupid to figure out how to click something on my own, especially when that game has already shown me that information beforehand.

I don't think it would be too much to have the Security Guards say something as you approach them. The Vanguard guy says stuff everytime I run by and he doesn't even do anything!
Personally, I've found I *always* have to click on the band on the shield to get in or out of the Hollows. Once upon a time it indeed used to be you could simply click on any part of them. Not for a long time it hasn't been, though. And it's another of the minor bugs that has gone for years, ever annoying and never fixed.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Sometimes when playing, I feel that things that don't have the "I can be interacted with!" border can fall into the background. I'll still notice them (the billboards for example), but generally my assumption is that if it doesn't have a name/border (or is obviously out of place like a mission clickable), it's in the background.
Check it again. As I said earlier, I tried it since this thread was started, and could click anywhere.

I have the choice of touching crotch or touching shoes in order to enter the zone. It's been like this for years.
I find that clicking the riot shield does the trick. I don't believe that I've ever had to crotch click, though I seldom visit hazard zones any more so I suppose it's possible that one of them requires it.

The only way to get the hand to work on their chest or head is to lower the camera angle so that you're looking straight at them. Using "first person" mode should work too.

It looks like the problem is that the "collision box" for the SWAT officers is offset not vertically, but horizontally. It's out in front of them. If you use the over-the-shoulder view that many of us do use, this causes us to need to click lower because that's how being in front projects when we look down on it at an angle.

Which as the thread stated... is a bit much for a new to the game player to know.

This sounds like you might think I was suggesting it was OK because I (now) understand it. I don't. I was just providing details on what, exactly is wrong with it.

Ahh the post's tone sounded like you were there, smoking jacket on, glass of wine in hand, remarking how the peasents simply need to know...

Your lucky then since you're immune to the problem. This is what I have I experience using the Atlas entrance to the hollows..

And as UberGuy suggested, not looking down may help.
'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.

Those first 2 screenshots are standing toe to toe with the hazard contact using first person view.
Looking straight down is my solution to this problem since it first started. I've seen this problem come and go with mission doors (science map) and with Salvage racks. To solve the problem look straight down from the top and wiggle your mouse. Newbs don't know to do this which is way Lisa started the thread in the first place.
She had a box of regular old preCoV auto included City of Heroes I bought on sale months ago when I wasn't sure if I had that type of code and wanted to see if I could get 30 days for less then $15.
