Concerns about the new EULA
Sadly, the Windows XP Mode experiment was a failure. Whether it's the architecture of the emulated graphics card or the fact of the emulation itself, City of Heroes can't handle the emulated S3 Trio built into Windows XP Mode. That is not an option at the present time for solving the problem of the game monitoring your computer bit streams.
I'm unsure how a similar experiment with a Windows 7 virtual machine would pan out but I don't have the drive to put in the effort to find out. |

It's only a violation of your privacy and civil rights if you don't agree to it and they do it anyway.
That said I don't like it. I understand they want to watch out for botting which is rampant in another NC Soft game where the botters/goldselllers have destroyed that game's economy. That led to a violent round of purges of the innocent and guilty alike, resulting in there only being 4 servers left and the game not even on the market 2 years yet. It's a fun game, but the economy stinks and the paranoia level is deservedly high among the playerbase. I would rather there be a clear line about only watching for purposes of the game and not my financial information, political views, etc. Game employees have been known to do shady things. There's nothing to say a fired employee won't just start up a new goldselling business using customer lists, now he may decided to skip the marketing and go straight to your bank account if the EULA's tools include a keylogger. |

Steele Hits this one out of the park for me. I don't like it much, but I will embrace it like a brother as long as I don't have to keep dealing with random goldspammers and it doesn't bog down the game.

For that reason, I applaud the MARTy initiative. If they can keep the monitoring on the server, where it really makes the most sense, then I'll be happy as a clam about the whole monitoring issue.
Oh and talking about extreme EULA's I just read this morning that Sony added a clause to their online games stating. "You can't file a class action lawsuit against them." Apparently in an attempt to head off class action lawsuits over the hacking incident they had.
That said the same article mentioned that yes it is a legal clause but it is doubtful it could actually be enforced. Ie it wouldn't stop you from filing a class action lawsuit but then they probably could legally terminate your account if you did. ::shrug::

I'm strongly considering sucking it up now though, at least for one day, just to try the Philotic Knight the way he was always meant to be from the start: a Force Fields/Fire Blast defender.

If you're thinking about something like VMware, I can tell you it plays, but very slowly under workstation 7. Too slow to be really playable, at least on my hardware (which is fairly zippy). I'm going to start putting 8 through its paces starting tomorrow, and I'll certainly do a CoH test at some point soon. Perhaps 8 has better Opengl performance.
|
I've heard things are better under Fusion, but I don't have a copy of Fusion to test, and I've also heard things work better under Virtualbox, but I don't have my home workstation set up to run Virtualbox.
I can say that workstation 7 was *almost* playable. I could get CoH to start, run and play, but my frame rate was somewhere between 7 frames per second in instances, to 0.5 frames per second in some outdoor shared zone maps. That sounds awful, but its just an order of magnitude from being playable, and that's under 100% software emulated OpenGL. If VMware can get OpenGL somehow accelerated, you could probably play CoH (and anything else) in a Unity window with zero chance of spyware seeing anything else on your workstation. I'm sure its just a matter of time before that's how we end up running all apps we have concerns about.

Several episodes of the animated series had Uhura saving the day, she even had command of the ship at one point. It took several seasons of TNG before a woman was put in charge of the Enterprise. The show was goofy but it pushed boundaries just like original Trek.

UHURA: We can't let them have that weapon.
SPOCK: They are not about to get it, Lieutenant.
UHURA: Why not?
SPOCK: Assume you are a Slaver war computer. You've been turned off. You do not know for how long. But when you were turned off, there was a war on. Now you are awakened by aliens you never saw before. They do not know any of the military passwords. They ask you so many questions it is obvious they know little about you. Your owner is nowhere about. What would you think?
UHURA: I'd think I'd been captured by the enemy. Or an enemy, at least.
SULU: And when they ask you how to find your most powerful weapon setting, what would you give them?

The Slaver Weapon was written by Larry Niven. Introducing the Kzinti to the ST universe. They were then taken and seriously warped in Star Fleet Battles. The designers kept insisting that the animated stuff wasn't canon in their universe but never did explain how they got to use the Kzinti without including The Slaver Weapon.

If nothing else, Kzinti in Star Trek!
Fun trivia: it's the only episode of the original or animated series that has neither Captain Kirk nor the Enterprise in it.
Was interesting years later to read the Larry Niven short story that episode was based on, to compare and contrast.
