Make Badge Markers More Visible

Exploration badges can be a source of fun, but right now the markers are almost invisible and you have to go to Paragon Wiki to find out where they are.

How about adding lighting or effects to draw attention to the badge markers from a distance? This would make it easier for vets to relocate them and it would make it much easier for new players to discover and get into badging as well.

They could have coins hovering above them!

(Honestly, I'm... eh about this. I'm for it as long as it's optional and can be turned off.)

Don't be a silly ninny... half the fun is finding them. They don't need to have neon signs pointing to them or the soon to be ubiquitous coins. Besides, if you're a Vet player you a) already a have their location memorized by heart or b) have Vidiotmaps installed.

Your suggestion would deprive newbs of the exhilaration* of finding an exploration badge on their own. So, no.

With their current visibility, it's not so much a matter of finding them as accidentally stumbling across them with a 'hey, what did I just get a badge for?'.

Personally, while I wouldn't want the spinning coins hovering over them, I'd like them to glint like a shiny object from afar to catch the attention of my inner jackdaw.

I was using that awhile back... and then it inexplicably began crashing or horribly dropping framerate whenever I entered the sewers. I haven't revisited it since.

The game shouldn't depend on third party software.

Right now the markers are so small and blend in at times so well, I'm sure the new influx of players won't even know that these markers exist. I know when I first started out I had no idea how I got the badges I did, and thought it was for uncovering a certain percentage of the map.

I'm all for doing something to make them stand out a little more. Maybe make them glow, or produce a small amount of light so that they stand out but aren't incredibly obnoxious.

What's the point of having something be hard to find if it lights up with a bright shiny sign telling you exactly where it is?

^ This

The exploration badges are a nice thing to do IF you want to. People who stumble across them and go 'Eh, neat, whatever' need never be bothered by them, while those that go 'Ooooh shinymusthavemoar!' can read up on them a bit more and then go hunting. Same goes for Supergroups that need them for Base TPs.

Sorry, I don't want to see something else unobtrusive and harmless being ruined by giant eye-sores...

This might be one of those "sure, whatever" kinds of things that might be nice to have sometime. But I honestly think there are about a 1,000 things I'd rather have the Devs fix or add to this game -before- worrying about updating these markers.

Just make them glow slightly, like the bio-luminescent costume parts (yeah, I think it only shows on Ultra Mode, but...*shrug*).

I also wouldn't want to see anything too dramatic or "easy" but I will say that realistically speaking most badges are searched for using ParagonWiki or VidiotMaps. I can't imagine someone honestly figuring out or stumbling across all eight Independence Port badges, for instance. Or the Shadow Shard ones.

While we're on the subject of exploration badges, it's always bugged me slightly that all three sides use the same marker, despite it being the same design as the actual Hero version of the badges.

And on a tangential note, fix the freakin' Camel Snot badge already. Srsly.

The idea finding them is fun is directly contradicted by the fact you have to get their location via PW or Vidiotmaps or just having a really good memory. If it's so much fun, why do we install Vidiotmaps? Because it isn't.

How is it hard to find when you can just wiki it or vidiot it? It isn't a challenge, it's annoying and bars newer players almost entirely. Imagine a new player who sees a glint in the distance, goes over to it, gets a badge, then decides to look for more of those glints. Current system is, you get a badge for no reason as far as you can tell.

Then why make it even easier? How many new players are just going to go looking for glints randomly versus finding out what badges are, finding out there's an entire list with exact locations available, then finding out that they can download map mods to make finding the exact locations double easy?

I would have. And would still find it far more entertaining than the alternatives.

Maybe if you ask some of the nice forum people like MTS they will make you a custom replacement for the map disc that will really stand out.

Personally I would not object if the Devs made a larger version an option, although it seems to be defeating the point of the things imo. And if they dis make it an option they better do it AFTER the make those stupid Mario Discs optional.

There are similar "Hunt down various small items" type quests in other games, and I won't name any due to forum rules but in each of them that I can remember the item in question is a little more noticeable and stands out far more than a tiny piece of pale light brown, stuck to the ground, in a city environment.

And in those games, players are far more apt to actually go find the item in question if they see it in the distance than if it blended into the environment and is only findable via stumbling upon it. Right now, as others have stated, the only folks that find these badges are people that use some third party software to locate 'em all. Not how a game should work.

If they ever got upgraded should they be large and obnoxious with an arrow pointing at them visible from miles away? No. But a slight glow that makes it visible from farther than five feet would be nice.

Hm...maybe a soft, slowly pulsing light effect. Then they'd look a lot like Maintainer's Guild Beacons and that's a-okay with me.</obscure reference>

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, or if this has been changed...but they don't draw until you're significantly closer than anything else in the game. If they just rendered instead of having stealth, I'd be happy with that.

Optional please.

I remember when the History plaques were put in and roaming the Test server with several other players searching for all of the plaques in all of the zones so we could compile lists.

Someone made a simple overlay file that painted a bright yellow and red bullseye on the plaques, making it easier for us to find and catalog them. It was especially useful in Boomtown with all the rubble and in the old Faultline for finding the ones buried in the bottom of the crevasses. It was so-so in Dark Astoria due to the fog, but it still helped.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Personally, I'd be opposed to turning them into bright flashy things, but I wouldn't be opposed toward turning them into plaques.

This way they'd be more visible (instead of the invisible nubs they currently are from more than 5' away) and would also be easier to re-read if you liked instead of having to hunt through your badge list to find it.

Not a fan of the idea. There's been such a push to making the game easier and more convenient that has had the cumulative effect of making the game a bit like bowling with the gutter bumpers up.

As long as I can still play with the gutter bumpers down though, it matters little to me how others are playing.
