Just taking the temperatures of the board denizens ay this moment in time. Rank, in any order you deem appropriate, your RP preferences:

Action RP ... You RP in missions
Adult RP ... The naughty bits
Light RP ... You talk OOC in some channels, RP in others
Immersive ... It's all RP all the time, baby. You hang out regularly at pocket D, etc.
No RP ... It's just you playing a game
(Insert your own category)

I am primarily a light /action RPer, though sometimes I just want to play without the RP effort. Some toons are more RPish than others.

Action RP.

I get little enough time to play as it is, so I squeeze as much RP into pickup groups as I can when I can.

I prefer big massive events in-game, and detailed RP stories/campaigns/etc out of the game. In-game RPing tends to be little more than a soap-opera. I still do it though, but my preference is for the prior types mentioned.

My preferences (reality has been a bit different for a little bit, but that's just the ebb and flow of time, energy and interest for me):

Immersive ... It's all RP all the time, baby. You hang out regularly at pocket D, etc. -Except I am never in Pocket D (just do not have characters that hang out in a nightclub)
Action RP ... You RP in missions
Those are both equal to me... I RP everywhere (Hmm, there's a Johnny Cash mock cover there...). I like the comicbook/super-hero/villain world for my RP here, so doing that type of stuff is where it's at for me.

Recently, I'm a bit more of a Light/Action RPer, myself. Plus, using some designated OOC global channels help to get our IC stuff going:
Light RP ... You talk OOC in some channels, RP in others
(especially for the past bunch of months. I guess it goes and comes in waves... the ebb and flow).

Adult RP ... The naughty bits
If we're talking about violence and such, if I am RPing with other people who are okay with it and all, that can be an integral part of some characters and story lines. I have a psychotic villain who was battling a psychic hero (who was also a therapist) and some of the results were intensely violent and terrible... to the point that I put disclaimers on some of our postings (we posted the chat logs and/or turned the chat logs into full writings for others to enjoy).
As for the sexual side of things, I have gotten into such relationships a few times, but I enjoy "fading to black" very quickly. Set up the scenario and then cut away, as I'm not trying to elicit strong reactions with that sort of RP (nor are the players I've ever RP'd such relations with).

Trying to think of another category...
Ah, I do have a couple of slightly more comical characters. They can seriously fit into the world of my most serious characters, but there is an element of comic fiction that is brought out more-so when they appear in their comicbook, so-to-speak. The only reason I bring that up is because sometimes I feel like they're not so complimentary to other people's RP desires (other people's comicbooks).
Super Platypus and Zox'Oculox would fit into this category for me.
Of course, they both can absolutely fit into a more serious realm (Zox, possibly, more-so). I just may have to tone the over-arcing comedy down sometimes.

In my case I mostly solo RP (if that makes any sense). I don't really have any interest in RP'ing with other people (I'm anti-social like that) but I do enjoy making up stories for my characters. Not just a back story but stories about how they interact with NPCs or react to particular story arcs. In a number of cases I've done a mental re-write of particular story arcs to better fit how they would react to it while trying to stay within the bounds of the written story.

I do a lot of the same (I enjoy playing solo, but I also RP with others).
If you type things that your character says while soloing... you win! (I do!)

Haha

I do more the fan fiction sort of RP.

Which makes it sound a lot more weird than I intend, but hey.

Generally, I don't RP my interactions with folks. Too many folks not rping, and even among them, too many folks that frankly aren't going to be interested in my characters' stories.

I simply play normally, then fit out the scenarios in my head as to how the mechanically driven scenario works out. It has the big advantage of letting me maintain my character's Mary Sue status without being a downer on other people's play .

1. Action RP - Liberal use of the battle cry short cut key. I do like to kick butt and RP while doing it. I cannot imagine doing missions in any other way with out it feeling repetitive.

2. Immersive RP - It feels wierd not to be in character.

3. Light RP - I have those days where sometimes just in a mood for something comical or not so engrossing .

My prefs in order from most important to least:

1) Action RP ... RP in missions, TFs and in AE story-based arcs.
2) Heavy RP ... RP in /sg, /c, /team and local. OOC in globals, broadcast. Use of brackets when not RPing.

I don't (I'm a slow typist) but I do tend to imagine what they'd say. Especially with my MMs where I tend to imagine the interplay between the MM and his minions.

Who RPs anymore? I would, but the only RP I ever see is the highschool drama that goes on in Pocket D. And even my 19-year-old character want's no part of that crap.

I just quietly compile a storyline in my head that will never, ever find paper, and noone will ever know of.

The off-beat space pirate...Capt. Stormrider (50+3 Elec/Storm Science Corruptor)
The mysterious Djinn...Emerald Dervish (50+1 DB/DA Magic Stalker)
The psychotic inventor...Dollmaster (50 Bot/FF Tech Mastermind)

Action RP.
Light RP.

And, I don't know. Immersive'ish?

What I actually tend to do is act like the character. So even when I have to ask about OOC things like Incarnate Trial mechanics, it's as though that character is the one talking about it.

I suppose I fall somewhere in the solo-RP and Literate RP. For me, RP'ing should be like writing a book while the text should look more like a natural flowing conversation as well as adding subtext and "emoting" actions while maintaining a characters nuances. A cross between a screenplay and living short story, if you will. I also have my own style and prefer realism with fantasy influence rather then something that is so grossly fantastic that it looses its meaning which is why I tend to ignore anyone who plays a god, transient being, ect.

Unfortunately, most of the RP I have seen is more in the way of people just chatting and playing "pretend" while attempting to one-up each other with few exceptions so I have a tendency to be pessimistic about RP here.

Storydriven RP is my Fave.

((And to those pesky Lorites that drove me from WoW, I dare you to come find me here. The Lore for my character is "MY" Lore. Tell me Stateman or game lore won't support my character and I'll send you right back to your "in-the-box" thinking world.))

As you can tell I detest (Lore of the Game is Law) RP. This game was designed for us to tell our own stories and I love telling and participating in everything this community comes up with.

If you are worried about the person behind the keyboard, and not the character on the screen, it's not RP anymore. Now if you mean the character suddenly has something they are not supposed to, well...

I prefer a generally light/immersive style of RP, stay in character, but not everything has to be some big dramatic hullaballoo.

I really dislike most scripted RP as it usually is just a vehicle for someone's Mary Sue ego.

Espresso and chocolate with steamed milk and a dusting of nutmeg. No whipped cream. Yum!

Also action RP, absurdist RP, light RP, and the occasional immersive RP.

I'm halfway between light and immersive. I do speak OOC in several (I would even say most) channels, only RPing in Local and occasionally Tells unless the team we're on is an RP team, but I hate any mish that doesn't seem in-character, and I hate repeating content as the same character.

I only do action RP if I'm taking part in a specific RP team, but when I do it's always fun.

Ice/Ice Blaster. Dedication to concept is an ugly thing.
Claws/WP Brute. Sex without the angst.
Every CoX character lies somewhere on this spectrum.

Just a note... this is technically against the TOS, so nobody sane is going to admit to liking it on the official forums.

It's like posting a poll "where do you get most of your inf: farming, marketing, RMT?" Nobody is going to admit to the last one.

Carry on.

That depends on your definition of "Adult RP" from the OP.
I responded honestly about it. And if that definition includes things other than explicit details of engaging in sexual activities, then I have admitted to liking it.

I mean, "Adult RP" can mean a lot more than just that side of things.

Now see, I'm on the other side of this.

I hate it when people come up and totally ignore Lore. Yup, the game was designed to tell our stories, but when in a mass group RP setting (so not closed setting amongst a certain group) then seeing Lore breakers tends to just not make sense with those who stick with it.

All of a sudden the Lore breaker is Statesman's son, has killed Countess Crey, is having a love affair with Numina, then to find out they're Ghost Widow's mother's brother's uncle's collage roommate's bestfriend.

...

Okay, that last one isn't that bad.

To the OP...

I like Action RP, however I tend to not always go around in teams RPing. It really depends on the team. My main for instance will work with villains towards common goals, but why would she not just turn around and beat the senses out of that sniveling psycho who likes to kill civvies and send him to jail?

There's a difference between working with Catwoman and working with Psycho Bob, the psychopathic soul sucking murderer.

Then there's the difference between teams. Harder to RP imo, when the team is steamrolling missions.

I'd never call hanging out in Pocket D immersive RP, unless you're RPing a clubber/raver/lounge lizard/what have you. It's a club. Really, who goes out clubbing every night? Especially if they're at all a working Hero or Villain. Do their plans suddenly get put on hold at 6 oclock?

So if that's considered immersive RP, I'm not an immersive RPer.

In the end I'd say I'm all those depending on my mood.

I would prefer immersive RP, pretty much in character all the time. I have characters that I've put a lot of thought and story into, and it's fun to see how they would interact with other characters. It's not easy to stay in character when not everyone else does. Or someone cracks a great IC joke and I have an OOC reaction. Or I hop between other channels. So I settle for Action RP and Light RP or whatever RP I can get.

But I've always had a lot of trouble with RP, and I'm starting to realize why. I have two kinds of characters. The first kind is my namesake and also my tank/brute pair. They are characters with a well developed back story and they're very static. The way I see it, they've done their maturing and they are who they are. I have a story to tell if someone were to ask, but mostly they sit back and react to the things around them. I get to be a part of your story, but most times I feel like an extra or just the audience. It starts to feel a lot less fulfilling, and I have this desire to share my own story. But I know my story has no room for interaction, as it's just a history I've already written. I don't want to put someone through what I feel as the audience.

I have another character who is completely open ended. I love the character; I love how he interacts with others. But I'm afraid he's too demanding. He's an attention hog, and the story is all about him dealing with his demons, so I actually end up feeling guilty when I try to get people involved.

I'm sitting at two extremes, and I'm not sure what to do.

...

I also don't know where this came from or why this topic triggered my wall of text. But I typed it up, so damned if I'm not going to hit the Post Quick Reply now.

I'd say that's the usual RPer Dechs

All you have to do really is realize it's okay to be attention hog at some points and the audience at others.

Which is of course easier to say than do, as people tend to want to be the big hero/name/what have you, of the scene.
