Wait, what happened to the Victorian Steampunk face?!!

The Victorian Steampunk female face - or was it the other? Used to have red lipstick and a beauty mark. Now both of those are gone?!! if I wanted pale pink lips i would be using the other face! Why was this done? Is the lipstick coming back?

This unneccessary change makes my heart go I have no problem with a no-lipstick version of that face being added, but why take the red lipstick away! And coloring the lips red does NOT have the same effect, the edges are blurred.

This changed? When did it happen?

After failing pretty hard on searching, I found what some of you might be interested in.

Some recent patch notes, in this thread:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=264322

If you scroll down to Steampunk Pack and look under Female, the before-last line says:
Removed red lip color on Victorian face

I'm thinking this is it, but I personally have no idea, as I haven't used that face option yet.
Hope this helps.

They changed it cause I guess people complained that the colored lips made certain make-up options look bad.

I agree though that they should have just added a version without the red lips, instead of just removing the red lips all together.

I suspect the almost violently negative reaction the Steampunk faces got - and the blood red lips were a hot topic - is part of why these went away. I personally HATED the red lipstick on that face, as I hate red lipstick of this kind on any face irrespective of how well it's done, especially when it's not recolourable, but then I hate the face for a variety of other reasons, the harsh shadows of the normal mapping shader being a big part, so just removing the red lips won't really help much.

I can't stand the normal mapped face. They look shiny, the definition of the features seems off to me, and at some angles they just don't look right. The faces we had added in one of the earlier issues? Those I like. Skin tone, perfect. Nice features, varied, doesn't look like someone's buffed, waxed and polished their face.

I recall a friend of mine hating those because they have neutral expressions, but I personally agree with you wholeheartedly - I LOOOVE the "new" faces from way back when. As Johnny Butane used to say back when the Steampunk faces were on the Test server, they look weird because JUST normal mapping isn't enough to make a realistic-looking face without subsurface scattering and such effects. The old faces don't need these, as the fleshy effects were "painted-on" and integrated into the textures, making them look more like real faces, something the Steampunk faces lack.

But normal mapping isn't why I hate them, though. To my eye, both the male and female faces are just the faces of ugly people, and the HIDEOUS heavy makeup is a large part of what bothers me. They just look like derpy faces. That's not to say I don't feel the same way about some of the older "new" faces, especially the balloon lips ones, but those were a dozen faces, so even if I hate a good half of them, there are still three or four faces I DO like. When they add just two faces and both are aggressively made-up, there just isn't enough variety for me to find SOMETHING I like. Again, look at what face my Victorian Duchess uses:

NOT Steampunk, but instead one of the old "new" faces, which has both better lip colour that doesn't jab me in the eye every time I look at it, a better beauty mark and better eye makeup. It's perfect for this particular use.

And I feel the same way about the original version!

Add a no-makeup option for the people who like plain faces, and leave the lipstick alone! the costume creator is FULL of female faces without makeup, I dont understand why an option without could have been ADDED, so those of us who liked the red lipstick could keep it. People who dont like makeup have a creator FULL of options to use right now. FULL!

Yanking this face off of my Carnie the instant I get a spare five seconds. FAIL!

I really don't know why they chose to remove the lipstick, to be honest. I suspect it was part of giving the faces a higher resolution.

Now we have two faces that are almost exactly alike! GENIUS DECISION! What good is that!

If anything, the face is now less contrasty and notable because they took all the shading off of it. Why do we need more bare female faces, its not like we dont have 100 of them now! Fail fail FAIL, sorry I think this decison REEKS.

Ditto.

So this means I can never edit Faerie Queen's costume again or else she'll revert to the new version? That's just sad. Yeah, a new, separate face without makeup would have been a much better fix than taking away this beautiful face after we'd had a month to enjoy it.

I never thought this would happen but I find myself agreeing with B_I. The only reason I used that face was because of the red lips. The make-up options look like crap and I've deleted the character because her look has been ruined.

If I had only known that would happen, I would never have touched my Carnie's costume again, trust me! I had no idea this change had been made.

The Victorian Steampunk face was like no other in the entire costume creator. I am just so mad and sad about this, I can't tell you.... WHAT GOOD ARE TWO STEAMPUNK FACES THAT ARE ALMOST EXACTLY ALIKE NOW?!

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGEEEEEEEE, sorry I'm just really steamed at the moment, no pun intended. I think the thing that makes me maddest is that we PAID for that face with real-world cash.

Well, the two Victorian faces are different enough that I use one and don't care to use the other. And it's the perfect face for me from all that's available. I detested that Red Lipstick though, and am glad it's gone. If they put it back, I'm lilkely to do what some have done here and get another face...which would suck cuz I love the classic face.

Now, I'm in full agreement that an option should have been left in to keep the Red Lips as they were (be it another face, another makeup option). Heck I'd be fine if the default face was red lips if I could use a makeup option to completely recolor them to natural lip tones.

Yes, you had a Steampunk face to begin with that had no makeup on it. We also had one for people who wanted some decent red lipstick and a pretty beauty-mark. [Now of course you already had 100 female faces with no makeup on them in the costume-creator, but the Steampunk pack provided for you makeup-is-horrible folks yet again.]

So now you makeup-is-bad people get TWO new choices, and those of us who liked the red lipstick and pretty beauty-mark get.... goose-eggs, that's what we get. Nice.

One reason I BOUGHT THE PACK was to get access to the red-lipstick face. If they are going to start redacting stuff in the packs without warning, I may have to rethink my support of these packs. What will they take away next...?

Now I am certain you don't care if I buy other packs, and I'm pretty sure the developers don't care much either. Just saying. WE PAID FOR THAT FACE and I strongly protest its removal. Had they offered a no-makeup option I would not have cared.

Those of you now using Victorian Steampunk made-up face version, you have been warned! Touch that character's costumes at your peril!

The red lipstick was clipping with a lot of costumes?

American Dawg, Starblaze, Neanderthal Joe, Shining Dawn, Tokamak Dragon, Stinger Incarnate, Burning Tyger, Dover Tornado, Big Roach, Dark Paladin, Archmage Wylde, Kings Row Hornet, Prancing Deer
Avogadro, Science Lord
Edgar Nightcraft, Doc Cicada, Chupa Macabre, Dr Forchtenstein, Blood Shrew

I was a fan of the original face, because having the makeup made specifically for the face meant that the makeup actually fit the face. I haven't made that many female characters, but the first thing I did notice when I was making them was that the makeup options really didn't work for the majority of the faces, if it worked for any at all. Thus, neither of my female characters even bothered with it.

Its enough to make you throw your hands into the air in exasperation!! They took away the Victorian Steampunk female face [as far as Im concerned, its been taken away] AND!! AND, to sweeten the deal, they BROKE the corset 'chest-detail' into clipping so badly that anyone who cared how their character looked had to take that chest-detail off!

WINNING!!!!

In fact I think that's what happened: I took my Carnie to the tailor to get that broken corset chest-detail off of her because its ruined now, and she came out with her makeup wiped, too. GOOD GOING GUYS.

Something else to think about, was that if the face still had the make up it would be the first face in the game where a female character could wear lipstick AND a comic book styled face mask. And as a bonus, they could actually be different colors from each other (as long as the mask wasn't bright red.

Granted, you can still do something with the Jester mask, but from what I've heard, that seems to be an acquired taste.

I did...?? Coulda swore that both Victorian faces had Red Lips prior to this change.

I sure would have gotten a no-lipstick option if so.

No. One had lipstick and a beauty-mark, one was sans makeup.

This is one reason I'm so angry: we ALREADY HAD a no-makeup Steampunk Pack face. One big reason I bought the pack was for access to that made-up face!
