I actually just came back from a short break. I let my sub lapse and saw the Freedom thing when I stopped by to try and keep up with things on the forums. I re-upped myu subscription after reading a little bit of it, because I wanted to weigh in on it.
It kinda sounds like you have some of the same concerns I do about the VIP server. The number of posts I saw wanting to know about transferring entire SGs, including bases, is what has me concerned. Not that SGs mean much to free players, since they can't join them. But transferring a whole SG, en masse, means there are quite a few players that will most likely be making a permanent move. Those of us on the forums are the players, generally speaking, most likely to want to help new people out. But we are barely 10% of the game's total population. How many people who don't post on the forums will feel the same way about helping newbies as us? Having Vets around is a good thing, and I'm sure there will be a good number remaining. I'm just concerned that enough people will want to avoid the hassle of F2P players that it will give them (the F2Ps) a bad impression of the game's population. I hope my concerns turn out to be unfounded, but until I see the results for myself I'm not going to be too optimistic about it yet. |
That said, I have no intention of playing on the VIP server unless it becomes some really busy server and virtue dies (which I highly doubt).
The intro of F2P players means nothing more than more people to team with. Already have everything people fear, going on on the live servers now.
As for the VIP server. I figure it will likely be like playing on Freedom.

I have no concerns of droves of people abandoning the regular servers for the VIP server.
I would even guess that a VERY large number of people won't even know about F2P until the in-game UI changes with I21. I know several people personally who didn't know anything about it until I mentioned something to them, and these are vets who are actively playing the game. I doubt those people are the type to care enough to move wholesale to a new server.

Personally, I don't believe that Free players will ruin the game. Sure, there will be the occasional ******* that we can report and put on ignore, but my experience of "just people" has been that they're just trying to have fun, more often than not. Sure, not all of them are what you'd call smart or eloquent, and there will always be the beggars and the users and the pests, but again - most people aren't like that, free, paid or subscribers.
To me, the VIP server serves only one single purpose - to keep VIP players away from Free players, and I find this to be an empty gesture, at least in my case. As others have mentioned, I actually prefer playing with new players, because that's the time when a player is genuinely enthusiastic with the game, still finding things out. "You mean I can slot more than one damage enhancement per power? Awesome!" What turns me off isn't the Free players, it's the jaded vets who clearly don't want to play the game and just want to rush through everything as quickly as possible, leaving me in the dust and treating me like a pest, all because I want to stop and smell the roses... And I'm a longer-time veteran than most of them!!!
I have no intention of setting foot on the VIP server, and I feel that people who do are missing out on some of the best fun in the game. Though I may be biassed, because I've always felt that City of Heroes is the most fun when things go wrong. When everything's regular as clockwork, the game becomes boring.

It's not only been true for me in this game, but some of the greatest fun I've had in table top RP games has been when things go insanely wrong, haha.

Not everyone going to move over to Vip Server, I for one will stay on Virtue, I see the Vip Server is a way to stay alway form Noobs and newbies players. Also I believe that most Elites and the stuck up crowd might move to the Vip Servers. I rather just socialize with people, I enjoy helping New Players and I find the Vip Servers really not a needed thing, however some might Disagree.

I know I'll make new characters on teh VIP server, but probably not move any.
I will most likely move a few characters to that server that I don't play anymore just to make room for newer characters. That way if I ever do need to get away from the nooblets I can go there and have something to play

We've been very pleased with the overall sentiment of at the very least giving the fresh blood a chance.
One of the most exciting prospects of City of Heroes Freedom, to us, is the fact that players who no longer play the game will return. They'll have a chance to reestablish lost connections and renew friendships years old, all because they're going to automagically be made into premium players with their old accounts. Premium players won't have many of the restrictions that Free accounts will, and when Free accounts see the amazing Community surrounding them, they'll have the option to make the jump to either VIP or to Premium and enjoy some of the benefits we have to offer.
It really feels to me that many of the Community members here on the forums are already of this mindset:

I can probably think of 20 or more people I'd love to see come back in under a minute, and I have great confidence that CoH Freedom is a great direction for the game. It just means that with all the new good, I'll be dealing with at least one confrontation that I'd rather avoid.

My view/fear is that most of the people on Freedom who exist only to powerlevel through AE will migrate to the VIP server since their market of selling powerleveling will dry up with free players unable to access AE. If that makes the VIP server even a fraction of some of the things I've seen on Freedom before the "Break the Server" challenge day, I want no part in that.
I'd rather stay on Pinnacle and be a big fish in a little pond than a little fish stuck in powerleveling and PvP smacktalk hell on the VIP server.

No one pays attention to me, cause I listen to the voices in my head.
I am not moving away from my homeserver other then an occasionally new toon test.
Me (and I will ask my full SG todo the same) will involve as many new blood in this game as possible. It is the only way this new move will work.

I think there are perfectly valid reasons for wanting to avoid F2P players. For someone whose experience in another F2P game has led them to conclude that F2Pers are mostly potty-mouthed children whose fun consists mainly of spouting racist comments, I'd have to raise an eyebrow if they didn't want to avoid such players.
I'm amused by the people putting down those who want to move to the VIP server. A lot of them seem to be looking down their noses at them while patting themselves on the back for being so enlightened as to willingly rub shoulders with the common man, while using the word "snobs" to describe those moving to the VIP server. To me this smacks of the most delicious irony.
As for me I'll probably be mostly staying on my main server unless the asshattery gets out of control. I'll probably roll some new toons on the VIP server and see what kind of community develops there, but I expect to spend most of my time on my current server.

I sneer down my nose at "snobs" who evacuate to the VIP server not because I feel they are somehow elitist (if I do, it's for ENTIRELY different reasons), but more because that won't save them from the things they fear most. If having been a subscriber to this game for 7 years has taught me something, it's that $15 a month is in no way an obstacle to stop ******** and retards from making a nuisance of themselves. The VIP server won't save you from anything. In fact, there's a high chance that it's going to attract that sort of behaviour as Trolls will know where the most "fragile" people congregate, because if you're on the VIP server, chances are you're easily annoyed by disruptive players. If that ain't a high-value target, I don't know what is.
Personally, I intend to deal with people as actual people, not Free players or VIP players or any particular class. WHO a person is is far more important than what that person is paying or what social class said person belongs to. Because there's always a real, living, breathing person behind the stereotype, and a lot of the time this person is actually pretty nice. I've found that, when you get down to it, most people actually want to be nice, or at the very least don't want to be dicks, and most people you can reason with and get along with just fine. There are always the bad seeds and the black sheep, but those aren't restricted to any class, community or payment model.
I remember someone once said that the percentage of idiots in a society is always constant irrespective of the size of the society. Yes, it means that a deluge of F2P players will bring more idiots in, but it also means that no matter how much you restrict your community, you will never escape from running into idiots. And experience suggests that this is true.

But I think it's highly amusing that you're engaging in the same behavior right now that you are claiming to dislike.
You're looking down your nose at the people who are looking down their nose at the people moving to the VIP server.

Hopefully all your attitudes toward it extend across the rest of the playerbase.
I've been out ofthe loop since a little bit before the news broke about Freedom, so I've been skimming here and there as I've had time. Unfortunately, it seems my skimming led me to the more negatively toned threads.
I'll stick around for a while and see how this all pans out. And hey, even if I decide I don't want to give NCSoft my money anymore, at least I'll still be able to log in and kill ****.
It's like saying... "Don't panic! Put on this helmet and breath mask and fire retardant suit and double check your parachute and if you do not have crocodile repellent, try to stay close to someone who does... But REMEMBER, there is NO reason to PANIC!!".
Well, it's not really like that, but it was fun to type out and I think there was plenty of knee-jerk reactions to the initial announcement.
