Durarara!!

Anyone seen this series through? Asking because it started on AS Saturday/Sunday and I always think it's interesting when a Japanese series lifts a supernatural being from a western mythos. In this case a Dullahan, a Celtic reaper / headless horseman. Their twist is it's a she, her horse appears as a motorcycle, and she chats online.

Hopefully it unfolds faster that Kekkaishi.

The main character seems like an overly whiney pain in the butt.

So... What you're saying is, it's anime?

Well the main character is playing the country rube in the big city, way outside his comfort zone. Next is seeing how he handles life in his new school as well as the inevitable supernatural weirdness.

I don't watch enough to know if you are joking...

Seems like it could be interesting. I'll give it a few episodes to start up, I know a lot of the time the first introductory episode isn't necessarily the greatest.

Scrappers need Motorcycle Melee now, though.

Uncoloured people and way too much chat room exposition so far. Seems pretty lazy with a tiny smattering of coolness. And a horrible ending theme. There's not enough good about it for me to give it any more episodes.

It's written, produced, and directed by the same guys as Baccano!, which is one of my favorite shows of all time... but I'm in Tenzhi's camp. I watched three or four episodes way back when and nothing in it really grabbed me enough to merit watching more.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

This is one of the MANY anime in my Netflix instant queue. Haven't started watching it quite yet, though.

Is this supposed to be about me? I saw the topic and was like is Xmas trying to say something to me and couldn't remember how to say my name and was just too lazy to find it...

But seriously... anime... i'll get around to it probably... Why isn't Ranma on Netflix?

I started watching it on Hulu a couple weeks ago, a little over halfway through right now. Really have been enjoying it. There's a lot of disparate characters and threads that don't seem to be going anywhere early on, but since it's fiction, it's easy to watch secure in the knowledge that it's going to come together and go somewhere. I enjoy the mystery of figuring out how it's all going to play out.

And when it does come together, hooboy. Even though I've only finished the first arc, it's already looking like one of those shows where I end up wanting to go back and see how everything was dangled just out of reach.

He's NOT the main character...he's a decoy from Celty, who is the real main character

though it is arguable that this is more of a vignette series because most of the central characters get roughly equal screen time

well, except that Celty generally shows up in everybody else's storylines

haven't watched Baccano! But Isaac and Miria make a cameo in one of the episodes....if you get the series DVDs they actually make a cameo in one of the two bonus epis too

uncolored people are on purpose. This is not a matter of laziness so much as wanting the important characters to stand out just that much more.

and the chat-room stuff gets pretty good, especially when Kanra starts really trolling

I wasn't that keen on Durarara!! early on, in fact I wouldn't have watched beyond the first 3-4 episodes were it not what my uni anime society was showing. However, I'd suggest you persevere with it, as it gets much much better later on.

it does seem interesting but the issue I have right now is they seem to be character cramming. Bleach has a similar large cast but it introduced said cast slowly over a long time to give the audience a chance to get used to it.

this one introduced no less then a dozen characters in the span of the first 10+ minutes of the episode and then expects you to keep up, as well as adding in the chat room which does have the issue of trying to figure out whos chatting at the time through only voice recognition.

its got some cool mythos in it though so Im gonna see where it goes.

So you mean you'll put down your rock, and I'll put down my sword; and we'll try and kill each other like civilized people?

warning Catsi....the voice actors doing the chat room are RANDOM until they identify who's who in the actual story

one episode they're voiced by all girls, then all guys, and then shuffled, and then they finally match the actual characters once things are revealed in story

it's definitely leaning toward a vignette story style

you have little pieces of ALL THREE archs shown over 25 episodes going on in the first three-four episodes

get like 6 episodes in and they have hints of at least a fourth arch that I'm told only appears in the novels

I sure hope so... FCM and I watched the first episode the other night, and it was just flat-out dull. The kid was beyond annoying and, while the motorcycle-fu horseman-thing seemed like it might eventually be interesting, the five minutes it was around really didn't make up for the rest of the show.

unfortunately, from what I'm hearing, Mikado's ultimate depths of character have only been hinted at in the novels and the anime doesn't get that far...

fortunately, he is not the main character and is just one of the major vignette characters

It takes a bit to get going but is really worth the watch, so give it about 6 episodes. I watched it on Crunchyroll when it was streamed from Japan and it was my favorite stream of that season.
There are 2 special (OVA) episodes..12.5 & 25...only time will tell if A.S. will show them. I don't have a working television anymore, so I haven't watched any cable/ broadcast for about a year now.

i remember reading a bunch of episodes of the manga last year and it was getting pretty interesting. i'll probably give this a look at some point. Maybe after i finish watching the Wakfu episodes i currently have queued.

I know the supposed reasoning behind why they did it. It's lazy. Not quite as lazy as turning all the background people into pseudo-stick-figure-silhouettes, but laziness in the same vein.

I didn't even notice that the disembodied voices of the audiobook they substituted for animation had identities.

...why wouldn't they?

Because they were bland, disembodied voices without faces to identify them with, which also weren't synched up very well to the moonspeak texting bubbles.

You're supposed to be intrigued by that, my man. Who are these three? Why are they sharing this chat room? How will it tie back into the story? Have you no sense of mystery?

Given this is coming from manga (black and white) which itself is coming from a set of light novels (ie text) and I believe (might be wrong here) the original creator (not the animator, but the novelist) is the one that put forth that stylistic choice, it has less to do with laziness and more to do with deliberate choice by an individual that wouldn't be involved in the day to day drawing/coloring/animating
