I didn't care enough about what they were saying to give a zeni about who or why. It was more like: hey, they're talking about stuff that the story could be *showing* me instead of sticking me in this dull chat room screen. Even showing the backs of the characters typing would have been better - at least it would have given something to identify them with.

Many anime come from black and white manga. And when they're not lazy they manage to colour everything.

the chat-room is talking about stuff you're being shown, the whole point is how information that we know by watching the actions is being mishandled deliberately and innocently between the various people in the chat room towards both good and evil intentions, everything mentioned in the chat room happens on screen either before, after or sometimes during the chat room sequences

and no comment at all about how that style choice was driven by the writer

really, you're simply determined to dislike this and are just finding excuses so no reason to respond any more to you

I have the first 2 dvd boxed sets. Can't get the 3rd one yet because of money...

Personally, I really liked the 1st set (episodes 1-9). The 2nd one was good but I preferred the 1st.

Oh, Isaac and Miria. If you loved the Baccano English dub and haven't heard already, different actors where used here in Durarara. Miria sounds decent though. But Isaac... *sigh*

It's old (and repetitive), and not many people care about it anymore? =p

Serious answer, Netflix doesn't typically get new copies of anime they had before. Maybe one day VIZ might get the streaming rights to it. But I doubt it. Not that many companies are streaming shows that old.

If the manga is, as you said, black and white, then the writer didn't really make a stylistic choice to not colour the background characters given that *everything* was black and white. Thus, the reason I didn't comment on the writer driving the stylistic choice is that the premise was illogical.

And really, I prefer to like anime, generally speaking. I'm not determined to dislike this anime, it's just not particularly good quality, and rather than focussing on the stuff that might have pulled me in despite the quality it focussed on banal characters and a lifeless chatroom. Had it spent less time on those uninteresting things, I would probably have kept watching just to find out what the deal is with the headless biker and the scarred girl.

On the other hand, I've powered through some disappointing anime lately that started out with highly interesting episodes and then just went nowhere or left out all the important stuff (glares at Ga-Rei Zero and Tokyo Majin), so at least this one didn't draw me in just to disappoint me later.

If this is in the same style as Baccano, then I have to see it. My favorite part of Baccano is when Isaac and Miria realize they are immortal, 70 years after they become immortal.

haven't seen Baccano! but as I understand it, the author is the same and it is the same universe as both Baccano! and Vamp!

I started watching Baccano! after it was mentioned in this thread, and I'll probably watch all of it. The story is a bit disjointed, but all of the threads have been interesting and I get the sense it may be going somewhere. And it's decent quality, too.

then give Durarara!! another try, because everyone I've heard who's seen both has liked both a lot

There are two things I would like to say on this topic:

1. Durarara!! is awesome, people should watch it!

2. /startclarkson/
"Some say, she is a supernatural creature from the far side of the world.
"Some say, she had her head stolen by an evil pharmaceutical company.
"All we really know is she's called Celty.*"
/endclarkson/

*(in the first few eps when I didn't know her name, I needed a shorthand for the character, so I called her 'Cat-Stig' )

Ha! Now that's funny.

Yeah, Celty is great...she's also the real main character and fortunately Mikado, while important especially in arch 1 and 3, is not

well, theoretically important, implication is that he's much more involved in the novels...my perspective on him in the anime is that he is mostly just there,

I mostly like Kadota and his gange, Shizuo, Celty and Anri (she doesn't get really explored until arch 2)

Simon is cool, funny and interesting

Masaomi comes into his own in the third arch

but I'm still waiting for Mikado to match up to the tvtropes.org descriptions of his character in the novels and manga

while he sounds interesting in those formats, he's easily the most dull character in the anime so far

and then the second episode focuses around someone I don't think we ever see again...things don't really get started until around episode 3 and the intros get finished leading into the first arch around epi 5 or 6

And when it does come together, hooboy.

So I guess the consensus opinion is that it starts slow. Probably hurts on my end that I came to this show from Baccano!, since that show takes off like a freakin' rocket after the first episode.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

I was talking with a friend about this the other day, and yeah, in a lot of ways they kick off in the exact opposite fashions. Baccano drops a ton of plot threads and then the characters begin to emerge in them. Durarara drops a ton of characters and then lets the story thread them together.

For what it's worth, I find both series pretty dang good, despite their differences.

definitely one of the more enjoyable animes of the 2010 season I highly reccomend it

Well, something that was honking me off in the second episode...

The sound mixing.

Good god, sound guy. When you have people speaking and/or expository dialog, don't have the frickin' score cranked to 11! Couldn't understand half of what was being said over the trumpets/whatever instrument that was. Especially when it's a soft-spoken female voice.

I'll watch the rest of it, but man, if that scoring problem keeps happening, I'll be mightily disappointed.

I only caught part of one episode. Was anyone else reminded of Paranoia Agent while watching this?

vaguely now that you mention it, it does mind-screw....but not nearly as badly...

they do the thing where they flash back to show you a different perspective on the same set of events, however, so you're constantly jumping around in time.

however, most of the mind screw is being shown to the audience and its more of a matter of trying to figure out if Celty and crew will see through Izaya's plots
