The problem of not wanting to play other archetypes

No worries (OP). I like a little of everything, but 1/2 of my characters are Controllers or Dominators, 1/3 are Tankers, Scrappers or Brutes, and most of the rest are defenders. So I definitely have patterns. Moreover, the vast majority of my melee characters are Super Reflexes, and most of my Defenders are Trappers or Stormies.

So, it happens.

There are other ATs than Scrapper? I wondered how those other scrappers had different powers and stuff than I did, thought it was a vet reward or somethin

Question: What was the very 1st toon you created? I'm betting that it's one of those three.

I play all AT's except Tanks. However, I'll never enjoy any AT as much as I do Blasters. I think this is because I learned the game with a Blaster. My 1st and oldest toon is a Blaster. Made for a rough learning curve but was very rewarding afterwards. Sadly, it proved to be limiting in my future enjoyment of melee AT's. With Blasters I have to think on my feet and use tactics and skill to survive. I have to know when to attack and when to hold back. I have to use LoS and KB to leverage the battle. In short I have to be active, very active on Blasters. Well almost, keeping an 8 man invincible team alive on my Empath around level 14 proved to be very satisfying.

When I try to play a scrapper... It gets boring really really quickly. To the point of me drifting to sleep in missions sometimes. The repetitive click click click recycle of attacks without fear of my life keeping me alert means I just can't get that into any AT with defense. I need to be kept on my toes at all times. I need to feel that at any moment the tide could turn and sweep me under if I lose focus. I just don't get that rush of adrenaline from any AT other than Blasters.

Because that's how I learned the game.
So how did you learn the game? Was it on a support toon? If so, there's your answer.

You get a free respec when you do the patron pools, so you wouldn't have to runa respec trial. Just have to do the tips.

The game i about fun.. so do what you have fun doing.. if thats corruptors/defenders/controllers so be it !!!

personally I wont play scrappers or stalkers.. hate em.. find them boring...

I might try a dominator though if i were you.. little different flavor to shake up the tastebuds maybe..

I feel pretty much the same way as you about playing scrappers/melee in general. My first ever character was an energy/kin corruptor-- He was all I played until level 43 when I decided I wanted to try something different. Next up was a fire/fire scrapper, who was my first level 50. After about a week of him being 50 I made a Warshade and never looked back.

Now my warshade is my go-to character for everything... He has high survivability, sure, but it's not a "turn on toggles and forget" play style... You have to be extremely active and on your toes all the time.. Knowing when to be in what form, keeping your damage up by constantly shifting for mires, always making sure that perma hasten isn't dropping (if it does while you're in a form it won't activate until you drop to human, even if it's on auto.)

Lately I've been trying to branch out and find another AT/set that I enjoy just as much... I haven't played either of my first two toons in at least two months- Now they're just additional market slots. I' have been playing my fire/MM blaster quite a bit and I definitely get the rush you speak of. He's only level 35 right now, but I'm hoping to get a lot of mileage out of him.

I started on a FF/psy defender, quickly branched into a Grav/Kin troller. I have some blasters. Defenders differ ranging from empathy to cold to traps as much as blaster is different from scrapper and controller. What woo'ed me to the dark side of melee was weapon customization and shields. I love my shovel/willpower tank, my manhole cover/pipe wrench tank.

Warshades took me awhile to adjust to. You can't judge a kheld until you at least try the option of tri-form, not saying thats the only way to play. Masterminds were my first villain. Corruptors I fell into quickly. Dominators had a big big learning curve for me, plus they changed domination halfway through my beginner phases - and I stopped trying Ice/ice and jumped on the electric control bandwagon for dominating. I love the super sapper mode, current projects include an EC/kin controller for extra sapping.

Scrappers bore me. I won't play a stalker. I have a very hard time with stalker teammates, cant ever seem to buff or debuff in a manner consistent to their playstyle which is counterintuitive from corruptors and masterminds. The run away and hide crap drives me crazy. Brutes are growing on me, but I am trying to get a brute with shield charge and lightning rod both - call me mr. kb.

I feel sorry for you, because the ones your playing tend to be the most boring ATs in the game due to horrible damage most of the time.

Defenders are like a disease to me, so I steer clear of them. The one and only defender I have was during fanmail's virtue server teaming sg. Sadly he's stuck at 38 still.

Melee toons are my blood line in this game with tanks and brutes leading the pack.

Here's another player who's sort of stuck like you, but it's changed for me. After bouncing around a few toons, I made a scrapper and took him to 50. Not much later it was a stalker, same thing. Now I get bored playing those guys and tend to play support of some sort, even got a Def up to something like 38th, although I still don't love them. Up until GR I didn't like tanks at all but now I have one at about 35th, although I've not played her in a bit.

I have altitis and can't stay focused too long on just one or even three toons it seems, but the longer I play the better I get at finding the happy in just about anything.

Honestly, my least favorite archetype to play is blaster, and that's bizarre, because my main is a blaster. He was my first character, my most straightforward hero, and I loved his backstory too much to let him slide out of that role.

To this day, he's my only 50.

And I loathe playing as him.

Try and wrap your brains around that one.

Masterminds, similarly, are annoying for me. Probably just because I haven't gotten mine up to godmode level yet, she's in that 20-30 level slump.

ATs I like? Well, Brutes and Scrappers are lots of fun... my Bane spider's just glorious to play, as is my Widow.

My Peacebringer... she can be either glorious or miserable depending on whether I've got a team to roll with.

Ice/Ice Blaster. Dedication to concept is an ugly thing.
Claws/WP Brute. Sex without the angst.
Every CoX character lies somewhere on this spectrum.

Soloing defenders isn't my favorite either, but you get a team with 4 defenders or more, go for 8. The buff/debuffs stack and you have a steamrolling machine of destruction. Short of that four defenders and four blasters is another sort of fun. Two sonics and two kins with four melee are a battering ram of success, too.

Not at all, I'm in a similar situation. I've leveled a Tanker and a Scrapper to 50 just to test them out but at the end of the day the conclusion I reached is that I really do not enjoy melee ATs. For the ranged ATs I enjoy them all to various degrees.

I don't see any problem with that...
My character selection screen are filled with Scrappers, a few Brutes and some Tanks... No matter how much I try I can not play any others

See below...

When I ran mostly solo or with small groups of friends who didn't have a lot of game system knowledge, I believed that the survivability of melee ATs was a necessity and played them almost exclusively. Then I started running with bigger groups that had more system knowledge and I saw how powerful non-melee ATs were, whether they were solo, running on a full team of eight, or working with anything in between.

Now I'm in danger of becoming one of those anti-melee guys...

I think many of us are the same way. We all have different play styles. I prefer melee toons.

Scrappers, brutes and MMs are at the top of my list. I find them to be fun. MY PB was also fun, which I played in human form in melee as if I would play a scapper.
I have no plans to make a dominator nor have I ever made one. I plan to make a defender but have yet to decide on what set. I tried a stalker when CoV came out but I didn’t like it and deleted it.

I have a level 50 Ice/Axe tanks. Ice Armor is very enjoyable to me. I think that will be the only tank I ever make.
I finally made a blaster last year and enjoyed the set. Im still trying to decide on what combination to make for a corrupter.

The only AT that I just can't get into is Tankers.

I have too much alt-tis to play only one type of AT.

What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.

Oh man.

I'm a total one trick pony here. Give me my mm's or give me sweet death. I made a mm back when cov first came out and I never looked back except to make a sonic/thermal corruptor - who actually made it to fifty. I have lots of mm's. Bots/traps, Necro/dark, thugs/storm, mercs/dark. No demons though. Badasses all of em. Thugs/traps the second I can customize my boys (only been asking like 6 years now devs).

Something about having my own team of guys ready working together to defeat stronger super guys appeals to me. Oh and bodyguard, such win. And the classes flexibility... Being both a buffer and a debuffer in the same archetype, but always able to bring the damage.

Mm's wrecked every other mmo for me except star trek since your kind of an mm in that game always anyway.

Cheers!

I had this same experience... almost. Because after a couple of years of playing squishies (blasters and controllers), I tried a dark/fire brute... and that was less squishy (though among brutes, one of the squishier ones...) and I liked it a lot...

but then I tired a Stone/Stone tank. And it became one of my favorite ATs. I love tanking on Hami raids, and being nigh-indestructible most everywhere else. But my 'active defense' training from starting as an archery/ice blaster (I <3 Ice patch!!!) was a great introduction to playing the game, and I would suggest everyone start as a squishie rather than a tank or scrapper - those are what I would consider Easy Mode.

The first character I made was a Gravity/Kinetics Controller. Now I can't stand playing them, that's mainly down to the secondary. I slowly grew resentful towards buffing people that I stopped playing my forum namesake, an Ice/Cold Controller, and all my other Controllers that were buff oriented. So I turned to Dominators instead; all the fun of my primary with the extra feelings of awesomeness from my secondary.

So you could say I stopped playing my main AT because of other people. Now if I'm not soloing I only really duo with one of my friends.

Maybe with the buff changes in i20.5 I will grow to love Controllers again, but right now I'm vaguely satisfied with Dominators. I would be more satisfied if there were more options available.

I've got a goal of getting a 50 of each AT but it is difficult as some ATs I just don't fun to play.

My favs are Tankers (lvl 50s: Fire/Fire/Pyre, Shield/Electric/Mu) and Controllers (lvl 50s Gravity/Storm/Stone, Mind/TA/Pyre [deleted due to RP reasons], Illusion/Forcefield/Psi [deleted as it was boring to play, rerolled as a Illusion/Rad]). I love Tankers because they can take a beating and I love just jumping into mobs head first and controlling the agro. I love Controllers because they are a big bag of tricks and do some many different things.

Next would be Defenders (lvl 50s: Kin/Arch/Psi, Rad/Dark/Dark). Again I find the variety of their powers enough to keep me interested.

In the middle would fall Masterminds (lvl 50 Bots/Traps/Mace) and my Triform WS (currently lvl 47). Again these have a lot of variety to their powersets so find them fun to play

The next ones are lower ranked because I am just getting into the ATs. These are Brutes (highest lvl 37 Electric/Fire), Dominators (highest lvl 20 Gravity/Thorns), Stalkers (highest lvl 20 Electric/Ninjitsu) and Soldiers of Arachnos (lvl 24 Crab, lvl 35 Night Widow). I like Brutes as they are relatively tough and chasing Fury can be fun, although I don't like them as much as Tankers. I am starting to really like Dominators because of the bag of tricks they have with their control powers and these could easily move up the list. I am slowly starting to enjoy Stalkers because I like being sneaky with Placate and Assassain Strike. SoAs are ok because they are slightly more interesting to play than Scrappers and Blasters.

EDIT *Corruptors also fall in the getting into section as they are very similar to Defenders*

My least fav ATs are Blasters (lvl 50 Sonic/Mental/Electric [deleted for RP reasons and I didn't like playing him]), Scrappers (highest are lvl 35 Dark/Dark, lvl 32 Broadsword/Shield and lvl 30 Dark/Willpower) and Peacebringers (highest lvl 30). Blasters just get boring to play as all their powers do one thing, damage. Scrappers I find to squishy and the criticals just never seem to happen when I want them to. And my PB I just find weak compared to everything else I've played, although he will never be deleted because the concept behind is so good.

I've just been thinking and reading this thread reminds me why all the predictions that certain ATs will become obsolete are always so horribly wrong.

People like playing different characters and powersets and just because one AT/Powerset can do one thing easily while another can't won't stop them being played because one person's definition of fun is different to everyone elses!

That's interesting. I had the opposite experience. My first character, and first to 50, was a spines/wp scrapper. I specifically created her because the sets looked fun and easy for a new player to deal with, and because I wanted to be confident that I'd be able to solo as well as team (and I was right on all counts). And while she still holds a special place in my heart, she rarely gets played anymore. My primary characters now are both corruptors. Which I must tell you, came as a big surprise to me; I did not really expect to enjoy them as much as I do.

I do still love my brutes and stalkers and my one tank, but I too tend to find scrappers a bit boring now. I guess I feel like the other melee sets give me just a little something 'more' to think about. But even at that, I tend to play them when either when I'm in the mood for soloing (yeah, even the tank) or am in the mood to play a different (from my usual) role on the team. The corruptors are definitely my go-to characters for teaming and my main, the ice/dark corr, can also solo beautifully (sonic/pain, not so much).

The one character I just can't seem to get past level 10 is my bots/traps MM. I know, right! I know I'm supposed to love the uberness! But I just...don't ...feel it...

(And on a side note, could my post have been any more parenthetical?)
