Redside Power

Coming back after a four year break I was r to get back into the game I remember. As a preferred Redsider, I thought that the new Alignment System would reinvigorate CoV - As I remember it being much quieter than CoH.

Now that I've been back for over a month, I'm disheartened to realize that Redside is even quieter than when I left!

So? Is Redside dead?

Only as dead as you make it.

Love Redside. Can't stand being full alignment of either side.

Dead? Not that I can tell. I frequently play redside and I still manage to run into plenty of people, either in passing or in teams. Maybe it's the hours you play?

The next biggest after those two, in my opinion, is what global channels if any a person is a member of. Most of the teams I join are recruited thru Global Channels.

I brought all my villains over to blue side except one SoA I left there to play when my husband wants to play his villains. I just don't like redside, never did - but I love the redside classes.

Agreed on all above points. However, also a lot of Red-siders that I know (myself included) went to at least Rogue in order to hop on Hero-side teams etc for the slower periods in the Isles. About 75% of my toons are Red-side and of them 50/50 are straight villain and Rogue. I keep some villains 'pure' for RP reasons and also to gather up Alignment Merits

Maybe what we need to do is collect all Redsiders on one realm?

It just feels so quiet on Redside.

QR

No. It's not dead.

This really, most of the TFs/Teams i join these days are ones that have been advertised through global channels.

@Damz Find me on the global channel Union Chat. One of the best "chat channels" ingame!

Yes, but are you Red or Blue, primarily?

This is a game where people spend 90% or more of their time in instances. Without you explaining how you look for people, we can't tell you why it seems dead.

I ran 2 treespecs back to back with nearly entirely different groups of people last night around 1am. and no, I don't play on Freedom.

Yes it is dead. When GR went live many of the "red-only" players went Rogue so they could team with the more active and team-friendly blue-side. People still go red but only for a specific purpose.

It's hardly dead. I can still run Strike Forces without them having to be the WST. I can still find/form a team without many problems. I for one welcomed GR as finally giving me the opportunity to play a Warshade. I did give Blue side a good ol' college try, but I got to level 24 before being unable to stand it and my Warshade went full red.

Subjectively, it feels more quiet. I see fewer people and am invited (randomly) into fewer teams when I play red side. I see less chatter in broadcast and fewer calls in global channels for red side teams/SFs/GM Hunts.

Objectively, I couldn't say. I don't actively try to team on red side so I'm relying on how often people ask me and maybe red side players don't team as often due to ATs soloing easier or because "teaming" to commit villainy doesn't feel as intuitive.

I don't know about other servers, but Champion's redside population has always been rather anemic. Since Going Rogue, it's almost died completely as the majority of the few that did have redside toons have moved them blueside.

I daisychained all the redside SFs yesterday during the day, Pacific time. I don't play on Freedom. Redside isn't dead. Form your own teams and you will never be disappointed.

I'm not talking about teams. I'm talking about seeing people. Around. Back in 2006 when I was leveling my Brute, I remember seeing loads of people going to mishes and traveling and around. Hanging out under Lord Recluse's statue in Grandville was popular.

Now...

That was before there were things to do at level cap.

Now chance encounters are more rare and gathering points have changed.

Newer content generally has less travel time and crosszone travel. The tips, for example, often use a small cluster of doors that don't require much travel between. Leveling is faster so you spend less time in any one zone, and you have things like AE that mean you never have to travel through a zone much at all. The availability of ninja and beast runs mean people can get to points a and b faster, encountering fewer people. Rogues and vigilantes can spread out over all the villain zones and all the hero zones, and the cooperative zones have good reason for everyone to visit (ITF & LGTF are very popular, as are the trials which launch from there). All this spreads people out more and shifts the level 50 social spot from Grandville to there.

Recluse's statue never had much going for it, to be honest. It was a place to dump level 50s. Out-of-character, it seemed rather dull just hanging out under a statue- it didn't contribute much more than just using Global chat for socializing... and global channels let you do whatever you want wherever you want while socializing. In-character, it seemed even less sensible.

Again, what hours do you play? Because I still see people around, and I play mainly on Champion which, quoting Celestial Lord, has allegedly "always been rather anemic" in redside population. I have yet to see evidence of that anemia, but oh well....

I think it's hard to argue that Going Rogue didn't deplete the population of the Isles, as the data released by the devs show that the bulk of early 'transitions' were villain to hero. I certainly have noticed a slight population drop in the streets of the Isles.

Having said that, the Rogue Isles aren't dead. It's just that, like others in this thread have said, there are a ton more options now for villains. They can travel back to ancient Rome and do instanced missions or the ITF, go to the inter-dimensional nightclub and do trials or participate in events or RP, they can hit Oro and do TFs there, they can zone into the Rikti War Zone and do a TF or instanced missions.... the list goes on.

The other spots where people tend to congregate are the Black Market and AE. Because these (and the University, Midnighter's Club and RWZ entrance) are in close proximity in Cap, that attracts a lot of people. Grandville, by comparison, has just a RWZ entrance, and is therefore not a hub of activity. People just go there to do instanced missions and the SFs.

Redside is not dead, but the 'branding' of the game is most definitely hero-centric since the 'merge' a couple of years back. Most people do not use the villain-only terms anymore, instead using the hero terms (I admit they are interchangable, but to me it does make the 'villain' brand slip away over time). Examples which come to mind instantly are using 'TF' where 'SF' should be used, and 'exemp'ed' instead of 'mal'ed'. It's subtle, and many would say to me (quite loudly) 'stop your whinging, it means the same thing!'. I know they mean the same thing (essentially), but it does make me feel that 'City of Villains' is just something that pops up if I choose the skin on the exe, that for all intents and purposes it's disappearing as a brand.

Having said all that, I love redside. I love the archetypes, I love the maps, I love the mission design and I love the SFs. I even find badging much less tedious than blueside (I'm not saying it's perfect, just that I find it easier to get badges, particularly Accolades). My main Brute is one step away from being villain again after being blueside since GR, and I can't wait to have him 'home'.

Been to Atlas Park on Virtue, lately? That's a statue.

From now on, every new character I make will be a Hero AT and I'll make it a Villain. Just to spite the Hero-centricity.
