The Costume Creator is your pony, NCSoft!

I've said before that the costume creator is NCSoft's pony. They must brush it and feed it every day. They must give it lots of love and attention or it will get sick and quit bringing in players to the game.

Tonight, within 15 minutes, from 3 different sources, I heard comments that reinforced this. (Names have been anonymized to protect the innocent) --

Convo 1:

Quote:
[Team] Friend A: Love your ussage of the Victorian Decor Aura
[Team] Friend B: thank you
[Team] Friend B: i am lovin the pack
[Team] Friend A: One issue I have is that as a VEAT, I can't use the gun in it. Also, I wanted that clock belt!
[Team] Me: You're leaking, Not a Robot. Badly.
[Team] Friend A: But yes, it's an awesome pack.
[Team] Friend B: i just fixed the look
[Team] Friend A: Am not.
[Team] Friend B: i did not hide my SG emblem so it took my top off!
[Team] Friend B: LOL- is that a glitch?
[Team] Friend A: Whoa!
[Team] Friend A: Sounds like one!
[Team] Friend B: yeah her i will show you
[Team] Friend B: see
[Team] Friend B: lol
[Team] Friend A: The glitch I know of is the top hat I was wearing before has a bald spot in the back when in combat mode
[Team] Friend A: And yeah, that's a pretty big glitch!
[Team] Friend B: i think its because its under the details and not under the shirts....
[Team] Friend B: i had to really play around to find stuff
[Team] Friend A: Possible
[Team] Friend A: Yeah I still haven't found male pants for the pack. I just went with slacks for my Nemesis-esque outfit

Convo 2:
Quote:
[Team] Friend C: she look better now, [Moo]? I matched the pieces a bit better
[Team] Me: Let me take a look. I haven't seen her since you adjust her costume
[Team] Me: Oh yes. Very much so!
[Team] Friend A: Looks quite gothic
[Team] Friend C: awesome Thanks again for the tips, [Moo] !
[Team] Friend A: I mean that in a good way, of course. Lord.... Recluse loves goths.
[Team] Me: NP at all. Costuming is the best part of the game
[Team] Friend C: i agree

The third conversation took place when players started discussing the costume options on the open Beta in a global channel. Mind you, this was on a prod server and not the open beta server:

Quote:
Friend E: so am i stupid or is finding the acension armor on beta impossible
Friend D: the [empyrean] vendor has it
Friend E: well i bought it
Friend E: but cant find it anywhere at the tailor
Friend D: the face piece only shows up with certain things, cant use it with helmets. The other stuff is in there. Did you claim it from the emails?
Friend E: ...that was probably why >.>
Friend D: lol, I didnt hear a thing
Friend E: so to answer my own question yes i am stupid
Friend D: no chest or pants though
Friend E: thats good everyone wont look the same
Friend D: i really like the cape, not thrilled with the belt.. it is too big. The face piece is a glowie bit of cheese
Friend D: for the cost of that stuff I wish there was more than one option.. and you cant color the radience part seperate from the rest of it. loses some effect like that to me
Friend D: add th hasten effect and it pretty much washed out the gloves glow
Me: One of the resaons I tend to avoid Super Speed pool. The fire effects are so dominating.
Friend D: but I am rather addicted to hasten now. Fortunately the devs are very aware of the fact that folks want to ditch the effect. we might see those go away, or at least mod-able in the near future
Friend D: once people starting empy merits on that armor, the noise will grow quite loud
Friend E: damn this armor is pretty bulky
Friend D: yeah, I have heard it called very "WoW'ish

And then when I asked Friend D if I could post his comments, he replied with:

Quote:
[Tell] @Friend D: if ya talk about the belts; to me the back of it is just the right size. If you have the chest detail and the belt on, it is wayy to much. they overlap

[Tell] @Friend D: overall, I like them for my villains. They look a bit too sinister for the blue side

[Tell] @Friend D: the cape is awesome!

[Tell] @Friend D: if the desired effect was to show awesome incarnate power, then it works. It will (should) strike fear into lower level mobs. Dunno if that is where they wanna go for heroes.

[Tell] @Friend D: and the face piece doth sucketh. Giant glowing elephant ears

[Tell] @Friend D: If it were possible to seperate the glow from the chest and belt pieces, it would be perfect. the aromr underlays are just to big and bulky

[Tell] @Friend D: pro wrestlers would think the belt was gaudy
So yes. The costume creator and costume options are important. Players think about them ALL THE TIME. They notice bugs and know that something's not right when they do.

The costume creator is one of the most important parts of the game.

Are you taking care of your pony, NCSoft?

No they aren't. Call the SPCA!

1. We still have no ARMORED STEAMPUNK BOOTS.

2. We still haven't seen anything from the "All Things Art" threads other than pay for material.

3. The new iArmor parts are good looking but are still gated content.

4. We didn't get any free costume parts in the last, what 2-3 Issues?

I hope we get a revamped upgraded HI-res texture with boots and gloves for the Steampunk tight.
They said a while back they will be adding lots of new versions for old dated existing pieces. I hope they add tons of those upgraded pieces in I21.

17 had animated tails, as well as tails in their own slot. of limited use to some, but since previously tails were gated from martial arts robes, togas, any belts and even the pay natural booster, getting them was, to this dragon themed martial artist, an opening of several magnitudes for costumes.
issue 18 was basically going rogue- you either bought the pack or not, same as issue 6 or issue negative 0.
issue 19 had the alternate animations for several ranged powers. not costumes, but customization options nonetheless.

I'll go one step further and postulate that the creative cosmetic freedom that City of Heroes gives us is a large part of the game's appeal. As Moo has demonstrated, people DO care about what they look like - a lot - even if different people care to different extents. As such, I really want to see a larger focus on cosmetic updates to the system than what we have now. It's been ages since we got any meaningful power customization, and that's counting the half-hearted effort that were the Blast set custom animations.

-Alphabetise the Costume lists
-More sub-menu options
-Fix lower body zoom so it zooms on the lower body!
-Heck, give a fully 3D moveable camera to move around at will
-Three channel colour for parts
-FINISH adding revamped old parts, don't leave it half done (keep the old ones too)
-More non-Booster parts, kthnxbai

I wish they'd focus more on the costume designer and super group base building system, its the only real thing other than the AE that CoX has better than the competition.

Particularly the base building, neither competing game has that.

Yet. . .

I don't think we'll be seeing any major push into base building or large amounts of FREE, non-content-gated, non booster pack costumes anytime soon.

The new auras/costume pieces in i20.5 has already made me want to make about 5 new alts

A new costume piece/powerset always gives me a new idea for a new character!

@Damz Find me on the global channel Union Chat. One of the best "chat channels" ingame!

I'm not really seeing the pony link here - apart fromt he fact that you can make quite a good set of riding clothes in the costume creator, minus the safety helmet

I got the Vanguard pack.

I found some new belly shirts (Although I think they are from veterans awards.

I would like to see more cosmetic options.

Im not fond of the following

~We need more masks
~We need Textures on "Tights with Skin) Like Metalics etc)
~We could use more options in Details one (Hair Flowers, More Headbands Etc that mesh better with the Hair options for clipping purposes

I pretty much like most of the other additions ot things we already have. But I do see people using much of the same costume options over and over.

I was in a CC last night and saw about a million variations (Exagerated Point) of the same use of costume parts.

You have to pony up the subscription fee in order to use the costume creator.

Base building..grumble, grumble. I own at least one on every server, and on some servers I have two..I did not build a single one, and have no idea how to do so.

I went looking for something like a "Base Building For Dummies" guide but found nothing. No guides written for stupid people like me

It is as if the Base Builders belong to a special club, and don't want to allow the masses to learn how to build their own for fear they will no longer be special snowflakes.

And they then screech at the top of their special Snowflake lungs for more base building tools....sorry. I am not in the best of moods...I wanted to play my Claws/Fire Brute and instead I have to wait, wait, and wait, while they do maintance on a Tuesday.

But still, I have looked for a guide written in language I can understand, and I have found not one thing...which is why I wrote the above.

Sigh.

All of you out there who are wonderful at math and figuring things out instantly...I salute you, and pray that you all understand how blessed you are.

Lisa-Glum and ill tempered. When the game comes up, I am going to find one of these newfangled Fire Farms and go whack things...no, my Claws/Fire is still too young ..those who live in the Fire farm will whack her...and that will make me moodier...

No - I think it's an ugly style - the costume parts are cool and well made, but the whole steampunk thing isn't something I'm a fan of

I don't think there's a guide, because bases are mostly about looks rather than function, sobuilding is a matter of personal opinion and taste - a base building guide would be similar to a costume creating guide - there's no "right" or "wrong" way to design the look of your costume/base.

EU_Damz, I am threadjacking a bit to say I love the sunny, happy expression you have in your avatar. I think it is rubbing off on me, because I have a smile on my face now when before it was fixed into a truly horrible scowl....horrible enough to scare cats

They specifically addressed this during one of the Ustream chats. The problem is that by setting the costume the same color as the skin tones, people could start making heroes and villains that are completely naked. If you look, you'll see that there is no exact duplicate of skin tone in the costume colors. And sadly, you know that if it were possible, there'd be a constant stream of naked heroes flooding the city as people with the mentality of 12-year-olds think it's funnier when they do it than all the other bazillion people who have done it before them.

I suppose they could do something like having it so that when you pick a skin tone, you're locked out of having top or bottom costume parts within some small x% of that skin tone, but of course, that would be more programming that would have to go into the game, along with a new interface design. I doubt we'll be seeing it anytime soon.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.

Well, you go to register person and register for a base...what then? How do you get a base to go into? How do you build the rooms? My better half was experimenting one day and he made a hole in the floor and couldn't figure out how to fix it, I couldn't figure out either...we finally have to send a tell to a friend who is a base builder to come rescue our floor.

I guess I mean a guide for getting up, and running, when you know nothing...

But thanks for the reply Golden Girl. I appreciate it

Lisa.
