Oh my god.

Apparently Snaerr, my main, is cursed to make Freitag blow up whenever they talk.

This... this is kind of awesome.

Zwillinger I didn't actually see you so I don't know how bad it was, but I was trying to speak up on behalf of others cos I saw someone complaining before, can't find the right one in search now grr. Found this tho:

05-30-2011 01:45:38 Two Across: S'no War Walker. It's Zwillinger
05-30-2011 01:59:38 Rebel FireStorm: Yes, but still slightly irritating when he turns into a Rikti ship and drops bombs all over the place while we're trying to RP.
05-30-2011 02:01:56 Steel Flechette: I hate to say it, but I agree with rebel. Hes not interacting, hes showing off.
05-30-2011 02:02:06 Steel Flechette: I wish he'd just go away.
05-30-2011 02:02:17 Rebel FireStorm: ^

I did meet Freitag though I think it was last week - he was funny I remember him saying SKITTER when he was running around as a tarantula

Just... Be careful huh?

Interesting,

Whenever I'm on, I don't actually do anything to directly affect a player, i.e.; drop bombs. Not sure where that came from.

The worst I'll do is transform myself into a pyre of flame, but that doesn't actually harm anyone.

I wonder if people correlated the start of the Rikti invasion with Beastyle being on? Wasn't Beastyle's faul of course it was just timing, interrupted our party. >_>

But that said I know Ghost Widow use to pop on and RP, I fondly remember her kidnapping the groom in a wedding I was part of and being involved in a merry chase across Bloody Bay.

I'm not a heavy RPer myself so I don't really expect the devs to RP, I'm just glad they're here, having fun and hanging out with us. Its a nice interactive break and something different.

Well and its always fun getting you guys to transform into different stuff and use amusing emotes. The war walker with the tea bag at the steampunk/retro CC was hilarious.

But you'll always have someone complain about something. Personally I think if they feel a dev is ruining their RP they should just go somewhere else. It is a huge game world after all. Either that or go with the flow!

So last night I'm passing through Pocket D on Virtue, heading to the tailor to update my costume with some Victorian goodness, when who do I see in the middle of a crowd on the dancefloor? Ruluruu, or more specifically one of those giant minions of his. Curious which one it was, I checked his name: Freitag. LOVED IT!

Please let that player know the next time they are online that no Community Rep nor Developer would ever do that outside the confines of scheduled events. That was just a random Rikti Raid that happens when someone complete the Lady Grey TF. NCSoft employees are not allowed to use their god-mode powers to affect gameplay on Live Servers and bombs causing damage would be interfering with gameplay.

The recent appearances of Community Reps as seagulls or giant spiders is not interfering with gameplay mechanics... no one dies and gets debt from it (in fact, debt is turned off in zones with these special events).

Their showing up is actually a form of RP, which the player above should appreciate if they're a RPer. Of course, it a Community Rep as a Giant Spider drags a hundred other players past your RP session... well... then they should RP it! If they can't, then they're not very good RPers.

(I am not an expert on role playing… but this is my opinion regardless)

Personally, I have always been of the mind that if one truly wants to roll play in an interactive massively multiplayer game, then one should be ready to ‘roll with the punches’ so to speak. In my mind, a good RP’er would have incorporated the stuff going on around them into their story.

Even if it was something simple…
For example…

RPguy1: Hey.. did you see that crazy shapeshifter trying to grab some attention to himself?

RPguy2: Yes. Crazy shapeshifters… always looking to make a show of themselves. Now, where were we?

RPguy1: You were about to reveal to me that dark secret you have been keeping to yourself for years… (etc… )

It really just boils down to an issue of control, and in this case, a player’s desire to control the story around their RP.

Let me ask this. If a Rikti attack suddenly happened during an RP event in Atlas Park, do all the Rp’ers ignore the attack as if it isn’t happening as it doesn’t fit into the RP story that they are trying to act out at that particular moment? Or do they incorporate it into the current storyline?

Roll Play is not the same as writing a novel, or a short story. I feel that I must be willing to accept input from other players around me, and adapt to what else might be going on. When Z’ showed up and started to show off his different ‘forms’, I just imagined that he was a shapeshifter type character, perhaps even a mischievous god messing around, and nothing more. It became a background element for me.

Plus it was fun. I do not see what the issue might have been, except that perhaps some role players do not have as much imagination as they would like you to think they do.

Unless I said this already: personally, I never thought our innocent detective in Kings Row held such power inside up him until now.

Other than that, as a roleplayer I tend to take CRT visits depending on the situation, but mostly as OOC amusement when they hang out all of a sudden in AP, for example.

Actually, after the CC Sunday night you did change into a Rikti dropship. And it was dropping bombs. I don't think they actually HURT anything, but they were falling. I suspect it's part and parcel of the actual dropship itself. Might want to test that.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to check that out on the internal server.

Freitag dropped by Pocket D on the Justice server last week in the form of a giant spider and it was pretty awesome. He only stuck around for a few minutes and then (I heard) he was off to Atlas Park to do... spider things... there as well.

Very cool. And very much appreciated.

Imagine you're watching a film, or hell, even really getting into a part your acting in a play. It's a tense or emotional scene in a nightclub. Maybe you've caught your sidekick accepting bungs from villains, or you're pleading with a friend to stay on the right path and not fall into darkness. You're into the scene, they're into the scene.

SUDDENLY, HUGE MECHANICAL SPIDER/SPACE SHIP/LORD RECLUSE APPEARS!

For me, I'd ignore the hell out of that. Why? Because it breaks the dignity of the scene. It yanks you out of the moment into 'Hey guys this is a computer game ZANY STUFF!' and sometimes it can be hard to recover a scene from that.

If you're looking at role playing (Role playing, not roll. That's a different kettle of fish entirely, more of an accusatory statement about someone who plays a game more as a roll dice/hit things/get loot exercise, with minimal to none in character interacton) as a collaborative storytelling exercise, then just because someone says "LET'S HAVE IT RAIN CATS!" does not mean it has to rain cats.

Because that would be stupid.

And cruel to the cats.

Instead, I believe that in a close-knit scene between several characters (As in, the players have worked with the other players in Roleplaying before and the characters have history) a gestalt editor forms from precedence and known playstyles of the characters involved.

The Gestalt Editor acts to say 'Sure, having A step out of the way so Character F can get to the bar works', 'We can get player Q involved in this', and so on.

It also acts to say 'No, we're going to ignore the pink wolf setting a boombox down and shaking its tush', and 'you really, really want to acknowledge Lord Recluse or some simulacrum of giving out high fives -right- when it looks like this friendship is going to make or break?'

There are some situations where the Gestalt Editor may say 'Sure, hell, give the Recluse-a-like a bro-fist!' but to accuse someone of lacking imagination because they don't want the emotional quality of their activity to be diminished by someone in power who isn't even roleplaying?

Gestalt Editor says 'No', and I concur.

Regarding Rikti INvasions, as a final point? At the game zone location spot in Galaxy City that I roleplay at, invasions are always met in character. They're fought off, banter is had, then we check if people have been injured, and return to what was going on. Is it hard to ignore bombs and Rikti beaming in?

Yes. That's why we don't.

Is it hard to ignore Disco Dancing Statesmen? No. That's why we ignore Disco Dancing Statesman. Also, Rikti are known to invade. Statesman is not often known to dance in night clubs.

If you're going to roleplay and going to have this creative process, you have to be a little flexible and roll with the punches sometimes. You have it easy in the D, because no one can use offensive powers on anyone else. Imagine the chaos you'd have in there if that were turned off? It'd be a bar brawl every night.

All I'm saying is lighten up, son of Zor-El.

If you want to roleplay, everyone else has to be doing it too.

I'm not against Zwillinger messing about, but by their own admission they weren't roleplaying and just messing about. If Pocket D had no power suppression, people would buzz in not looking for roleplay, but a fight.

It's like trying to play tennis at a football match. Kind of interesting for a while, but ultimately not really what anyone came to see.

Freitag was a busy little bee on Wednesday evening. He showed up in the D as a police cruiser, a swat van, and then this.....

He then showed up as a couple of different giant robots. I love when stuff like this happens.

I'm not sure I'd classify a giant octopus spawing in the middle of pocket D any form of decent roleplay, more like "Hey hey, keeeerazzzy computer game antics".

A Community Rep spawning in as a known Hero or Villain in Pocket D is fine, at least it can be handwaved away easier. One spawning in as an insane demi-god, police car or giant octopus is just daft and immersion-breaking any way you roll it.

Why not spawn as a GM in a chosen zone and do it semi in-character instead? I'm sure you'd get a better reaction from the zone inhabitants too and city zones are large enough for people to work around it as needed.

An interdimensional dance club is not immersion breaking in a superhero game? Really, its to each their own. These things are easily avoided or ignored. I, for one, am happy to see the Community staff is so interested in getting in-game and mingling with the players.

Hey you know octopi need to party too, sheesh. Can't an eight legged cephalopod get a what what with the ladies too?

But hey if you consider that immersion breaking but don't bat an eye at the half gnome half angel/demon werebeaver hanging around in Pocket D lamenting their subscription to sexy wereferrets daily expired, more power to you...

Oh, after my last post, Freitag said everything my character touches is destroyed. It is now canon.

Was hanging out with the Cape Radio crowd in Pocket D yesterday afternoon and saw Beastyle there. Apparantly he was having issues remembering to not send tells into the local channel. At my suggestion, he came up with a new title for himself.
