Quote:Interesting,
Whenever I'm on, I don't actually do anything to directly affect a player, i.e.; drop bombs. Not sure where that came from.
The worst I'll do is transform myself into a pyre of flame, but that doesn't actually harm anyone.
(I am not an expert on role playing but this is my opinion regardless)
Personally, I have always been of the mind that if one truly wants to roll play in an interactive massively multiplayer game, then one should be ready to roll with the punches so to speak. In my mind, a good RPer would have incorporated the stuff going on around them into their story.
Even if it was something simple
For example
RPguy1: Hey.. did you see that crazy shapeshifter trying to grab some attention to himself?
RPguy2: Yes. Crazy shapeshifters always looking to make a show of themselves. Now, where were we?
RPguy1: You were about to reveal to me that dark secret you have been keeping to yourself for years (etc )
It really just boils down to an issue of control, and in this case, a players desire to control the story around their RP.
Let me ask this. If a Rikti attack suddenly happened during an RP event in Atlas Park, do all the Rpers ignore the attack as if it isnt happening as it doesnt fit into the RP story that they are trying to act out at that particular moment? Or do they incorporate it into the current storyline?
Roll Play is not the same as writing a novel, or a short story. I feel that I must be willing to accept input from other players around me, and adapt to what else might be going on. When Z showed up and started to show off his different forms, I just imagined that he was a shapeshifter type character, perhaps even a mischievous god messing around, and nothing more. It became a background element for me.
Plus it was fun. I do not see what the issue might have been, except that perhaps some role players do not have as much imagination as they would like you to think they do. -
Quote:I do not ever judge another player based on someone elses say so.I'm sure most of you know that CoH players are generally friendly and more mature than players of other MMO games. But every so often, you come across some really nasty individuals that make Cujo look like man's best friend. I've made this post to let the community know of such players and to tread carefully when teaming with them.
I recently was on a BAF trial with a character by the name of ***** who, in my own opinion was emotionally unstable. We were in the escaping prisoners phase and running the choke-point strategy (Which I learned was to spread along the center pathways around the south and north buildings creating a "gauntlet" to dispose of any escapees) This person however, thought that was incorrect and sent me multiple PM of vulgar insults. I replied to each one with a sly, but otherwise unoffensive and non-vulgar comment, simply brushing off her vulgar insults, the next thing I knew, I was in the RWZ because she apparently kicked me from the Trial. I asked the League leader if he could invite me to the next run, but unfortunately, he was close friends with ***** and, although he was friendly and polite, he wasn't going to take sides and apologized for the inconvenience, which I totally understood.
If you happen to be on a team with *****, be forewarned that this player, at the time we teamed together, was very vulgar and more volatile than a vile of nitro glycerin. I'm not sure if she's like this all the time, but please be cautious, stray too far from her idea of how a TF or trial should be run, and you mind find yourself kicked from the team.
I would like to hear if there are other players like this who we should be cautious of. Thanks and have fun playing on Virtue.
EDIT: I was told by fellow forum members that calling players out by name is against forum rules so the name mentioned has been censored despite nothing vulgar being said *sigh*
Perhaps that player had a particularly bad day? Perhaps your replies were taken the wrong way (as more hostile then you intended?) Who knows?
Here is what it looks like. You and another player had a disagreement, (and as all conflicts go, there are always two sides.. otherwise there would be no argument.)
Then you got kicked form the group.
Then you came here to post a warning about that player. (or came here to get even)
Now I am not saying that this is what you are doing, but it does look that way. As I am going to adhere to my original rule of not judging, I will not judge you for trying to ruin another players reputation, which is what you do when you post this type of story with the players character name attached.
This dispute you had with said player isnt my business after all anyway, and really has no business being aired as the dirty laundry it is here.
A little tolerance can go a long way. Posting warnings about other players and their characters does not foster a healthy and friendly environment in the long run, and only helps provide an avenue to some to disrupt the game for others. Your intentions might be noble (and again, I do not know for sure), but then again, you might just be out for some revenge on a player who you feel treated you unfairly.
I am not even saying that the other player is right to have insulted you, as again, I do not have the entire story to properly make a judgment. Nobody here does. Let me repeat that NOBODY HERE DOES!
All we have is your side of the story, and your word that what happened transpired exactly as you have described it. I prefer to use my own mind, my own eyes, and my own experiences to judge others. -
Thanks you very much for this Silver Gale! I have recently joined one of my characters to an RPSG, so getting my bio in better shape is something I was looking to have some help with, and your post has definitely pointed me in the right direction.
My current bio, although does receive many compliments for being well written, doesnt really tell anything about the character I am playing, but rather an elaborate back story about how my character came into being.
So the bio definitely needs a re-write.
On a side note, in regards to RPing in PocketD:
Doesnt PocketD have some sort of suppression field in effect to prevent violent behavior between their clients? (Preventing vampires from eating me, for example). I was under the impression that it did, so as to allow for the presence of both heroes and villains. -
Quote:So . ummm does that meant H.E.R.B.I.E. will replace him? .Well on Tuesday Marvel finally did it. =( Human torch dies in issue 587.
I liked the human torch wish they would have killed off mister Fantastic instead. Well how long do you all think hell be dead for?

I am pretty sure you can be flexible with Empathy in regards to how it works. For my plant-emp troller, I have decided that her healing abilities are tied into the same source of power that allows her to summon plants and roots. (She is a living terraforming device, and can use her power to alter the shape of life around her, including the ability to summon plant life or heal the injured bodies of her allies)
Part of the fun is figuring out a way to tie all the power pools together into something coherent.
So if you want to make Empathy for your character a Psi ability, I see no reason why you can’t.
(edited): I mistook a friendly joke for a serious comment. I removed my remarks regarding said comment. (oops…)

As I mentioned, I am not completely in need of a wall crawling ability but being able to cling to any surface that I land on would be nice. In fact, wall clinging, (instead of crawling) would be a nice touch with the leaping movement power, or even flying, as you could land on a wall and just stick there until you want to jump/fly away.
-
Quote:Nope but I also threw in everything I thought people would like, and didnt much worry too much about the technical difficulty of accomplishing it. And let us be fair here, as 4 arms are a graphic issue, and might require some work, but Wall Crawling would probably require a lot more as now we are dealing with collision equations and a different mechanic of play that was not already in the game.Do you have any idea what tremendous amount of work this would require?
In fact, I am not too attached to the wall crawling idea (heh attached get it? hmmm. Never mind, bad pun), but I wanted to toss a bunch of ideas up there, since it is a Super Booster I am proposing, and even I am not excited about all of the suggestions. -

Quote:As an ex-World-of-WarcrapAh, right, almost forgot where I was. Ask a straightforward question, get one decent answer, then a bunch of ******** remarks or get told you're wrong.
I do a search by level in whatever zone I'm passing through at the time, then search by level in all the zones. When 5-15 total players show up for the 6-20 level range, and I'm the only one flagged as looking for a team, I'll solo for a bit to use up Patrol XP and/or move on to another character.player, I have to say that the level of rude responses you have received here is very tame. Some of the more smart-alecky replies I would mark down as attempts at humor, and not as direct assaults on your statement or attacks on your person.
Everything is relative I suppose, but I have found that the community here is a significant improvement over that other games community, and have therefore become somewhat protective of it.
On a more personal note, when on my main character (Sectaria, level 45 plant-emp troller), I solo a lot. This is because I have a one-year-old little boy at home, and I might need to leave the keyboard at any time to deal with a bottle feeding or a diaper change.
Things are getting more routine with my son these days, and after 8pm, (once the little monster, and my wife, are in bed) I am more inclined to group in a team. Also, as I am more competent in my abilities to play my character (as I am still new to this game), I am becoming more eager to get involved in groups because I am a lot less afraid of messing up and annoying my fellow group mates.
Feel free to ask my Sectaria to join your group at any time, (assuming I am on). Dont worry if I am flagged for looking for team or not, as I keep forgetting to use that feature. I might not have the time to commit to a long mission, but if I am available, it will be my pleasure to group with you!
As a new player, everything is still fresh for me, so I am not picky about which missions I do, or at which levels I do them. (In other words, I will do any mission I am eligible to ) Just be warned that I am still learning the game, and I might make the occasional newbie mistake.
Cheers! -
Computer repaired!
I got lucky, and the drive that failed was one that was not being used, and we just pulled it out.
(one big sigh of relief!!!) -
Regarding Sectarias current status..
I just wanted to give those who group with my character (Sectaria), and those in my characters SG (Justice Girls) a heads up that I will not be in game for about a week or so. My computer (at home I am posting this from work like the slacker I am ) crashed.
For about a week, my PC was making a quiet, but distinct, grinding sound. I thought nothing of it, and supposed that it was most likely caused by a speck of dust on the cooling fan. Well, last night, that grinding sound stopped and so did my hard drive.
I am hoping that I can get the machine up and running again soon, but until then, I will have to sit it out. I expect to be back in time to attend the Justice Girls event on November 20th (yes, shameless plug time ), but that depends on what is wrong with the machine, and how much it will cost to repair.
To all of Virtue: Be safe, be cool (as always), and I will see you in game very soon!
(posted here as this is currently my only way to communicate anything with my fellows on virtue ) -
How do I show my dialogue text (in game) as a thought balloon?
Thanks in advance for replies,
-
I was unable to attend the event, as my son required attention that night, but thanks for the screen shots. Nicely done guys! I only wish I could have seed it live

Quote:What a cool idea!A friend and I were running through missions as a duo this weekend. I was playing one of my few supernatural characters, and got to thinking how some villain groups might look to the Sight - the ability (voluntary or not) to look past the mundane surface and see the spirit within. Arachnos Tarantulas, for example, are already creepy enough - especially the Mistresses - even with most of the awfulness of what's been done to them hidden behind armor plate; in the spirit realm, however, they must appear positively Gigerian. The motley-clad minions of the Carnival of Shadows don't look so bad at first... until one notices the strings tugging at them, and the fact that there's nothing, absolutely nothing behind the empty eye holes of the masks.
This thought led in turn to a familiar subject among my playgroup. It's customary to keep a costume slot on our characters to represent that truest, essential self when visiting Croatoa, the Psychic Plane, etc. Here are several of mine, including details that would be difficult or impossible to depict in-game. I hope that this will inspire others to imagine and share how their character(s) might appear to those with eyes to see.
Miss Megajoule - is clad in armor resembling the Justice set, in silver and light blue. In her right hand is a sword whose blade is blue cleansing flame; on the back of her left forearm is a blue energy shield that swirls like a soap bubble. The fine engravings on her armor are actually physics equations.
Sky Raider X - wears a modern U.S. Army uniform from which all insignia has been torn away. The uniform bears the cuts and holes of many old wounds, with accompanying dried bloodstains. His eyes are always shadowed by the rim of his helmet. On his back are a pair of (functional) steel wings, with sharp feathers.
the Watchmaker - wears, along with his customary suit, a jester's cap within a battered crown. (He's tried taking it off, but it sticks stubbornly.) A large pocket watch, with a cracked face and missing most of its innards, yet still ticking, hangs from a fob. In one hand he holds a tarnished brass flute, whose merry piping compels obedience and/or dancing.
Taxibot Gamma - is a Tin Woodsman-style metal man painted yellow and black and checkerboard. A door in his chest opens to reveal not a heart, but a gem which shines with a bright green light that hurts to look at and burns the skin.
the Spirit of the Row - is a large man dressed in 1930s fashion (shirt and trousers, fedora, long coat, scuffed shoes) with a scarf wrapped around his face under his eyes, in the style of the old "mystery men". An aura of power surrounds him; despite his humble attire, he carries himself with the quiet dignity of a king.
Officer Martinez - normally appears to most people as an ordinary Paragon cop. But in the realm of spirits, anyone can see him for what he really is: a vengeful ghost shrouded in the dark energies of the Netherworld, his shirt always wet with fresh blood from his mortal wounds.
the Abomination - is monstrous; there's no other word for it. This crudely stitched-together ogre is larger, stronger, angrier, more real than the pale shades and stumbling puppets that are most of Vahzilok's minions. Shadows gather around him whenever he stands still for more than a moment, but he's never completely still, twitching and snarling.
Dr. Forsythe - would be dressed in a surgeon's garb of cap, mask and scrubs, which are soaked to the elbows and knees with the bright red blood that pools around his feet, leaving a slowly-fading trail behind him. His eyes are kind yet terribly sad.
Foxtrot Maiko - is a bare-faced Japanese girl on the edge of womanhood, her slim form poured into a dark catsuit. Her fingers are knives. She holds a pair of gymnast's ribbons on short sticks; these are also razor-edged, and trail gracefully behind her as she twirls and skips. And she always smiles, even when the blood sprays across her innocent face.
Operative Kowalski - is a thug, plain and simple. A little taller, perhaps, than the other Arachnos goons; and he gets a tattered spidersilk Huntsman's cape with a fancy collar, along with the single nearly-invisible thread leading back to his master. But his spirit is still a nasty, twisted, brutish thing.
At my mains current level (my main is Sectaria, level 36 troller plant/emp), she has three slots. One for a regular alter-ego type design, and two super hero outfits. The alter-ego is a very human looking form in regular clothes, and is played with the concept that it is an illusion generated by some projection device, while her true form has green skin and insect antennae.
However, her origin states that she is a hybrid being, and is only partially human. Perhaps I should design a full KlaTik alien form for her to use in Crotoas spirit world. (thanks for the wonderful idea!)
Unfortunately Ill need to level up a little and get that fourth costume slot before I can do that. -
Quote:This isnt my first rodeo, son. I have been actively involved with MMOs for almost seven years.-Looks at join date, then post count-
Give it time, son... Just give it time...
EQOA (my first MMO, and I played that one for over three years until it died.)
World of Warcraft (Which started out pretty well, but slowly turned into something completely messed up over the three years I played)
City of Heroes (where I currently reside .)
I might not have the experience needed yet to play the game as expertly as most here, but I do have more then a little experience in judging the overall flavor and feel of an MMOs active community.
But if I learned anything from the other games, it is that the community is a fluid and ever evolving entity. Thing constantly change.
But for now, at least at this time, this community is the best I have ever seen anywhere across at least three MMOs, and over seven years of play. -
Virtue and Drama (?)
I just decided to weigh in my personal opinion on the apparent level of drama on this server.. .
There isn’t any.
At least not a lot of drama that I can see or feel. Seriously, this is perhaps one of the friendliest gaming experiences I have ever had. Perhaps it is because I am still a new player here. Perhaps it is because I am usually up front about my newness to the game with other people. Perhaps it is just that the player community here is significantly more respectful then the communities I have encountered in the past.
My previous game was World of Warcraft, and I played it heavily for three years. Now if you want to talk about drama, and griefing, and general overall harassment, then we can discuss my experiences in that game. I can regale you with tales of openly hateful racism, homophobic rage filled rants, and individuals specifically targeted by a large number of players for all sorts of nasty bullying. And all of that happening in the server wide trade chat channels. (Imagine someone running around for hours in Broadcast spewing hateful and racially insulting filth… for hours… )
City of Heroes is a much friendlier environment that is entirely the result of how the players conduct themselves.
Perhaps the moderators in this game actually police their servers, or perhaps the game mechanics themselves help as this game is not anywhere near as competitive and openly hostile as WoW. Regardless, it is the players that form the community, and it is the players in CoH that are (in my opinion) exceptional!
Therefore, I would like to direct the rest of this post to the Player Base on Virtue:
Thanks for letting me join your game, and helping my character to learn and grow in a system that many of you have mastered for years now. Thank you for your patience and your generosity! (I have twice been given large amounts of INF from a random high level character.. and this sort of generosity never happened in WoW). Thank you for the regular community-run Costume Contests (that I never win, but absolutely enjoy attending to see all the creative and cool costume ideas).
Thank you for giving my virtual characters a home after having to leave my previous game. And thank you for making them so warmly welcomed.
Excelsior! -
(I better not get banned for giving you this information
but here goes nothing )
The film in question was called The Erotic Adventures of Dickman & Throbbin (1986) Directed by Jerome Tanner, and starred John Holmes as Dickman. Genre: Adult/Comedy.
( and we shall never speak of this again.) -
Oh.. I forgot to mention my Evil-Rabbit character. A spoof on Bat-Man, complete with a dark blue outfit and cowl with bunny ears. (Im new here, so this character has probably been done already, but I felt like making him regardless. Besides, where else can I use the quote below?)
Why a rabbit? Well, rabbits frighten me, and its time my enemies shared my dread.

Quote:A sincere welcome to the awesomeness that is Firefly. When the series first came out I was interested, I figured "Cowboys in space! That's gotta be awesome!" but the first episode aired on FOX didn't grab me, and further attempts to watch it were hampered by schedule juggling and, as I recall, it getting pre-empted by sports or something, so I gave up.
Since it recently came up on Netflix streaming I decided to finally give it a fair go. And in the proper viewing order, too, since as I understand it the first episode FOX aired wasn't the actual first episode. Had FOX aired the actual first episode first it would have grabbed my attention much better.
Yeah, I'm years late to the party, but now I get to finally experience the regret that it got terribly mishandled and only went for one season. And as I'm a few episodes from the end, I'm already experiencing the regret.
The worst part is, I don't get to say "Why didn't anyone tell me about this"...
The one lesson I learned from watching this show was Jayne’s interpretation of the chain of command…

Three of my main characters are all based off the alien-insect theme, mostly motivated from an old marvel comics character called Bug, from Micronauts (1979) Awesome toys, and the first 11 issues of this comic were equally awesome!
p.s. There is a rumor floating around about J. J. Abrams developing a Hasbro based movie called Micronauts, and Hasbro has definitely acquired the rights to the toy line. Perhaps an updated Baron Karza figure will be made available? Ah.. one can dream

Quote:Nah.. I moved away from the royalty angle when I decided that my character was once a super-hero from another world. The royalty attribute just made the character more complicated then needed, however, I have only designed three out of seven KlaTik Guardians, and there is no reason one of the others cant be royalty.Don't let them take the royalty part away, because of the label Mary-Sue, especially if it's more background than anything.
The current ones are not however. -

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=112614
I just finished reading this wonderful little guide to RP. (Thank you very much Burnsie!)
Going over the initial information, and using the guidelines, I decided to review my character’s back story accordingly.
• Where you Were
• How you came to be in Paragon City
• What are your abilities
• Where your abilities came from
• What is your purpose in Paragon City
• What your character personality is
• What are your “quirks”
• Where you Were
Initially my characters were from another planet; the planet Kla’Tik, a primitive and peaceful world where the inhabitants evolved to live harmoniously with nature. (I will have at least 4, and up to a maximum of 7 characters who will share an origin here.)
• How you came to be in Paragon City
My main character (Sectaria) and her fellow Guardians were forced from their world when it was destroyed.
From my back story post:
Their Captain, Mal Ni Krom, (which loosely translates to Big Bad Bug in our language) gathered the few remaining Guardians left to his side. He formed a great stone around the survivors, and rode the shock wave into deep space. Seven survivors in all. Seven Kla’Tikians are all that remain of their once proud and peaceful race.
However, this doesn’t meant that there cant be more survivors.. only that there are currently seven known survivors..
• What are your abilities
All of their abilities should be based on nature in some way. Sectaria has plant control, while my two other already created characters have similar abilities. Hal D’An has the ability to project plant like thorns from his body, while Mal Ni Krom (Big Bad Bug) can control the very earth itself, forming rock armor and rock like weapons.
• Where your abilities came from
All seven of my Kla’Tik Guardians were heroes in their own world. They had powers above and beyond their fellow kind, but their power all came from being bonded to their world. Since that world was destroyed, they are significantly less powerful then they once were, but they are able to connect to our world, and are therefore able to slowly rebuild that power. (This helps to explain why they start as low level characters, and slowly level up.)
• What is your purpose in Paragon City
To protect their new home. To prevent what happened on their world from happening here. As their bond with our world grows, they become ever more passionate about protecting it.
• What your character personality is
Sectaria is quiet and appears to be shy. She is however a very capable hero, and her power grows daily. She is not fast to trust anyone, but once that trust is obtained, she will be blindly loyal.
Big Bad Bug is old and wise, and very strong. He is patient, gentle, and slow to anger. But one should not incur his wrath, as once angered, he is unstoppable. He is the leader of the Guardians, and will be the character I level up last, as I want to get a very strong feeling for the game before I begin to play a leader of any kind.
Had D’An is aggressive, wild, and savage. His sanity is hanging on by a thread, and his dark sense of humor is offensive to even his dearest friends at times. However, he is still a loyal and trusted Guardian, and the closest friend that Mal Ni Krom (Big Bad Bug) has.
• What are your “quirks”
I covered a lot of those in the personality description. However, as far as quirks go, I will try and develop some. I thought that perhaps they would all share a certain quirk, such as being allergic to a certain element, or perhaps they all love coffee.
The coffee addiction I will implement with emotes, and it will not be uncommon to find any of my Kla’Tik Guardians standing around drinking. (Why do they love coffee? I don’t exactly know, and they don’t either. It’s just really good stuff to them) They also all like to rest in a crouch position, and can even sleep like that for hours.
Appearance!
Since they all came form the same planet, I needed to develop a particular design that would make them all look like the same species without being completely identical. Therefore there were some required costume pieces that must be incorporated in a Kla’Tik character.
Green skin (or red), (any hue, but leaning towards the lighter ones)
Antenna coming from their foreheads
Clavicle Spike shoulder piece. (Although other shoulder spikes are allowed, as long as it looks like it is a natural part of the character, and not something worn.)
The males should have the Monstrous leg piece, and the Large Insect feet.
Apart from that, anything else goes.
Also, in order to fit-in to their new world, their second costume is actually a disguise, and should appear completely human. (A device is used to generate that illusion, but it is shorted-out by water…)
Whew.. looks good to me so far … -
Quote:Here's a list of what's available. The Smoke Bomb emote comes with the Martial Arts pack.
