Didn't see it or maybe my search-fu is on the meh side, but according to this link Seth MacFarlane has been given the greenlight to reboot the Flintstones Franchise. Well as long as it isn't a clone of Family Guy then I might be interested in it.

Given that Family Guy is already a pretty solid clone of Flintstones in many ways, you might be hoping for a bit much.

Seth MacFarlane is capable of writing good stuff. He's just gotten lazy with most of his current stuff. I think it'd be worth watching the first couple episodes of at least.

*cut to flashback that has nothing to do with the current scene*

So when does Fox get renamed Seth? I know there are masses who love him, but any time I have watched anything he does I find incredibly boring and showing somebody who is trying way too hard. The amount that is funny really doesn't justify the number of shows he does, nor the hype he gets for it.

Torn about this. The guy has talent, but I really hope he goes with the spirit of the Flintstones rather than Family Guy in stone age.

Let's be honest, even if he tries to be faithful, it's going to suck. You can't take a classic show from a point in time (IE rip off the Honeymooners) and try to modernize it. A prime example is that horrible new Looney Tunes Show on CN right now (not the timeless reruns).

Well, I think some of that has to do with some of the stuff that made Looney Tunes great, they just wouldn't allow anymore

Flintstones wouldn't have this problem. Not that this means it would be great.

I think Family Guy in the Stone Age is what we're going to get. Maybe once upon a time he had more talent than that, and maybe he still does, but all his shows (Family Guy, American Dad, Cleveland) have been successful because of their formula. If he changes that formula the millions who follow him from show to show may not approve... and those millions are what Fox bank on every time they greenlight a show from him.

It's more than possible to 'typecast' a writer, and I believe none currently are moreso than Seth McFarlane.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Great Gazoo was a regular, and he sounded an awful lot like a sarcastic baby or alien.

Who knows, maybe the Flintstones will give McFarlane an opportunity to get away from the Family Guy schtick and try something different. I thought the Flintstones started out as a primetime adult show and then got toned down to becoming the family/kids show that it is now. I guess MacFarlane wants to take the Flintstones back to that point. However I do feel that McFarlane won't go full out crazy with the Family Guy humor with the Flintstones. He'll probably have to get approval with Flintstone rights owners as to what can and can't be done with the Flintstones property.

Except most domestic sitcoms have the husband as an idiot and the wife as the smart one and in control. In the Flintstones, Fred was always the man of the house (without the threat of battery like in the Honeymooners).

This is a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation.

The Flintstones as entertainment is pretty awful by today's standards. It had a laugh track. I don't remember ever actually laughing along (yes, I'm that old). Which was pretty typical of situation comedies of that era.

To recreate that type of program is doom. No one will watch it.

To 'update' that program with more contemporary standards of comedy will have folks wailing that he destroyed the spirit of the Flintstones. But, that has a better chance of being commercially successful with a younger audience who really didn't know the old Flintstones.

It's obvious what he needs to do.

Amen.

Though i think that on a personal level the dude is funny, ihave seen him on shows like Real Time and such, i just really hate every one of his shows. They are really just knock offs of other ideas. And though i know there are really no new ideas left, he doesnt really improve on them much i guess is my only complaint. I find most of his shows try to go over the top so hard that they just lose any sense of being funny.

But the trick of the flinstones always was basicly taking modern convience and finding a stoneage equivilent. Little mamoths that were canister vacums, birds as garbage disposals etc. All that being old hat now they are going to be faced with finding ways to make stoneage internet and computers, smartphones, ipods etc. I just dont see that classic FStone formula working anymore. Kinda like the Jetsons. We have really gotten beyond those "Future" gimmics being funny anymore.

Stay true to the spirit of the original by just ripping off a different sitcom?

Stoneage Seinfeld?
The Prehistoric Office?
Friends (with Dinosaurs)?

Always remember, we were Heroes.

Actually, it might be funny if it was a spoof of those classic 50s and 60s sitcoms. Have the prehistoric nature of the Flintstones careen against real modernization with stone-age tech being taken over by more modern tech as well as the mores of the 50s confronted with more contemporary attitudes.

Boo. Do. Not. Want.

Y'know what? This reminds me of early episodes of Family Guy that were actually funny and well written. *cut to flashback of when Family Guy was actually more than flashback jokes*

Tales of Judgment. Also here, instead of that other place.

good luck D.B.B.

It was a pretty empty threat given that Alice just rolled her eyes each time and kept being in charge.

I don't have any sacred memories of the Flintstones or anything so I'm not worried about it being "ruined" but... why on earth do we need a reboot of the Flintstones (as opposed to an original series which MacFarlane has proved Fox will let him do whatever)? Is this filling some need I was unaware of?

The need to make some more money off something that has 'name recognition' with the general public.

I suppose. Except MacFarlane can apparently crap out anything and Fox will cut him a check for it so why this?
