All Things Art - FX Edition
Put me down as yet another vote to do something with HASTEN (or the entire speed pool).
The "firey" fists just look horrendous, and completely ruins the look of a character (unless the character is built around it).
I would rather see something like a blur-type aura... a blurred shadow or ghost image that blurs with the character's movements. Isn't there something similar for one of the powersets?
Anyway... something needs to be done with that atrocity.

YUMMY Low-Hanging Fruit for BASE LUV
Hi Tunnel Rat,
I'm afraid my question to you got missed amid the rapid-fire Ustream™ chat, so I figured I'd try my luck here.
Would there be any chance of redoing the enviromental effects in Dark Astoria and giving it proper volumetric fog that you can wade into and that varies in (drifting?) clouds of density?.
We really need to get our spook on in Dark Astoria and make it the creepiest place in-game, volumetric fog along with stuttering / blinking faulty neon signs, crows, and zombies that drop body parts (or chunks of meat) as they approach you.
On the theme of volumetric particle clouds as well, I'd love to see light clouds to fly through at skyscraper height and improved texture skyscapes.
0:35 - 0:48.
VFX? You tell me:
Fog. Map fog that is.
On some of the custom maps, visibility is ramped way down and the fog is given a basic ambient tonality. As this seems like it might be referencing two data points within current tech--one for draw distance and one for color--is there anyway we could get the option to throw a custom setting for both these values on our base maps and mission architect maps as well?
Is what I'm asking for here clear?
Complaints:
Nictus/Dark Shield doesn't change color even though there's a palette option for it.
Selecting 'Apply to powerset/all powers' in the power customization screen causes lag.
Suggestions:
Weapon Auras
Pet Auras
Power Customization ported over to the Mission Architect
Power/Weapon Customization for Pets
'Ethereal/Spectral' versions of costume parts/wings
Being able to use separate/different auras for different body regions
Being able to use both a normal aura AND a combat aura on the same costume slot
More 'digital billboards/animated signs' for Praetoria, Paragon and the Rogue Isles - something akin to the propaganda screens in Grandville
More color variant options for environmental effects (like water, fire, foliage besides (blue, red, green))
Rolling fog effects near coastlines at certain times of the day
More animation from trees, boat sails
More options for glowie costume bits, textures and body paints
Metallic/pearlescent/glass sheen options available for all costume parts
Gradient options for all/more costume bits (horizontal, vertical and diagonal)
Metallic, ethereal and glass skin options
3D 'option' for those that wish to use it
Monochromatic and/or B&W options
Birds in the air and fish in the water
Transition of building skins for Zone events; from normal to whatever fits the theme of a given event.
Building on the Animal pack (and Leviathan Patron) theme; adding in a power customization option to allow certain powers to have animalistic qualities (ie. elemental attacks that appear as a swarm of (birds, bats, insects) or an animal's head) heading towards its target (or even player heal/buff powers); self buff powers that activate an aura in a shape of a chosen animal before settling into its default mode)
Animated sigla for chest details (similar to what the Banished Pantheon have) and head auras/details (that circle the circumference of the head)
Customization for Pool, Patron and Epic powers.
Elemental versions of Weapon powers (ex. Fiery Maces, Electric Blades, Ice Axes, etc)
Glowing tattoos as glove, chest, face, shoulder and back details: Kanji symbols, hieroglyphics, barcodes, pin-up girls, alien symbols, astrological symbols (eastern/western); etc
Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"

If for example deciding to change something like Superjump to include cracks in the ground when landing, please make such a thing an option only if possible.
Character themes vary wildly, and using the superjump example, one person's hard-landing Hulk type superjumper vs. someone's light-landing ninja superjumper would make cracks in the ground for all superjump landings frustrating. Which comes right back to power customisation for power pools, oops, sorry. Hard to seperate these things. |
And that reminds me, we been told not to expect a new water powerset, and with the reasons given, I can accept that. But there have been quite a few requests above for some auras/effects that could work very well for those of us playing water-themed toons. Given energy blasts origins, the Storm/Energy combo already does a great job as a water powerset, and if we had watery footprint auras, splash landings, and dripping auras, it would be all that much better.
...I'd really love to see the Model Selection graphic (the bubbles and electricity effect) and the generic Hologram at the Architect Entertainment as costume pieces. It'd be awesome to wear other pieces (that don't have that effect like chest pieces, shoulders, etc.) over the base body pieces with the chemistry and hologram looking effects. They are simply awesome. Perhaps have them as auras if that works instead/in addition to.
...For reference for the Hologram request: |

For Bases:
More reflective surfaces (floors, walls and objects)
Various flavors of faux windows
Animated tiles (changes color when stepped on; traveling lines of color between the tiles, optical illusion tiles, shallow water covering floor, etc); something similar for walls)
'Aquarium' walls (or planetarium, etc; along a similar vein as the faux windows)
Being able to change the color of base objects

I'm not sure if this is FX again or not but I'd like to be able to change the colors of our MM pets much like how we can our Controller and Dominator pets.
I would dearly love to have Green Demons that I can pretend are Goblins.

The FX on the temp power rune of warding is amazing anything like that would be great.
|
With the fact you could add in delays from drawing, you could make several runes and have them all available for all the powers, just chaing the drawing time to fit animation time.
Isn't that kinda line my shtick? Give it back you Shtick thief! :P
Good call. I'd like to add maybe the Synapse Hero streak-style as an option? Winged Boots are close, but not quite as good as the effect on Synapse.

1) Pretty sure this isn't Tunnel Rat's bailiwick, and it's already in game.
Bug War Witch or Posi to let us actually use it.
Unless you want to add in /facepalmmecha where you summon a mech to facepalm
Couple of more suggestions, love this thread!
Travel powers I know its hard to ask for a VFX dev to not actually add a FX to a power, but I dont think sprint, fly or superjump need those ugly auras around hands and feet. When we jumping with superjump we leave a trail of semitransparent onion rings, and thats no sense. Im sure those FX were made long before you even work for Paragon but I think is time for them to go or got updated to something more fresh and cool. |
So they need to code a customization interface that works with Pool/Epic/Patron powers - which are many compared to Primary & Secondary sets, and can be changed around.

I didn't read the whole thread yet so these may have been mentioned:
1. I would love a "drippy" aura to simulate a character that is always wet or is "mushy" and falling apart like Clay Face or The Blob (the monster not the X Man villain).
2. Non sword options for all the Sword powers.
Optional things I want to disable:
I want to remove the stars from kicking and punching people with martial arts and super strength. I don't want or need special effects when I punch or kick someone, I just want to see the punch or kick.I actually tried turning my particles down all the way to take a screenshot of my character doing Eaglesclaw and that stupid Star effect still occurs as my character is jumping and when it kicks the target.
Remove glowing and fx from build up, aim, and hasten and all other self buffs.
Option to hide team buff effects from things like Ice shields thermal radiation.
Can we remove the skulls/faces from shadow cloak or whatever its called in darkarmor? Yet another optional thing I want to hide.
Group invisibility and grant invisibility. I dont know about you but I like to show off my costumes that I spend time on. Id like the fx from this to also be optional. Ofcourse it should still make me invisible to enemy targets.
Alot of this is probably more coding I realize but its one of those things that needed to be brought up.

Requests that are relevant to the FX field: CHECK!
Drama-free posts: CHECK! (And THANK YOU!)
You guys are making some fantastic suggestions, a couple of which may already exist and are awaiting their release into the wild.
A few people have asked about the Clunker aura in the Steampunk pack, specifically if the oil path can be separated from the flying cogs, and vice versa. Yes, it can. It is also color customizable. On the same note, I greatly appreciate all the suggestions for future Path Auras. Many are doable. Since its been asked, path auras are not limited to decals on the ground, and can contain rather complex particle movement. So things like fire, smoke, frost, bugs, etc., are completely in the realm of possibility.
Also, what the
you guys dont like Hasten?
Im kidding.
Ive seen a metric ton of requests for pool/epic/ancillary powers customization. (And no, asking for it is not breaking the rules at all.) Im a long way from promises on that one, but all I can say right now is that your requests have been noted, underlined, and bolded, as have qualms with the default travel power effects.
Apologies for the short post, but today is a busy day. Ill try to address more of your stated requests and concerns in the coming days.
Is it possible for us to get Focus and Shockwave to be power customizable? For example, I'd love it if those two attacks could be colored the same as this character's weapon and right-hand aura:
Playstation 3 - XBox 360 - Wii - PSP
Remember kids, crack is whack!
Samuel_Tow: Your avatar is... I think I like it
YAY on the oil portion of the Clunker aura. That'll be so useful in so many ways!
And even more YAY on the potential for bugs and other non decal only Path aura possibilities!
I wonder, and I know this may be too much of a hit on particle effects on a character but would it be possible in the future to mismatch some Aura options? Perhaps combining some minor ones such as:
Glowing Eyes with Path Aura. That way one could have a fiery eye glow with flaming footprints.
I don't know how to limit all the combinations, especially to only the ones that may not be as big of a hit on the system. I imagine a fully glowing body with the glowing Path aura may be too much (although it certainly would look cool).
I guess it's not different than flying cogs and oil paths tho. So maybe whenever we get an elemental Path Aura or something that can fit in with a bunch of different categories, then those can be squeezed into existing sets.
The Fire Path Aura placed in Bioplasm, Fire, etc. categories.
The Ice Path Aura placed in Cyro and Snowflake categories.
Get more bang for the buck that way instead of having Path Auras on their own, if they were intended to get implemented that way.

One nice thing would be to be able to have both a regular aura and a combat aura. So, your character could have fiery eyes most of the time, but when you entered combat their whole body could burst into flame.
Always remember, we were Heroes.
With all this aura talk, please have them update the UI for (costumes in general) these auric expansions:
Divy it up into two main categories?:
Non-Combat
Combat
then have these categories divided into categories similar to what's available for the general costume creator:
Head
-Head
-Eyes
-Hair
Upper Body
-Body
-Chest Detail
-Gloves
Lower Body
-Legs
-Feet
-Path
Pretty please.

Glad to hear about the path auras in the steampunk pack, also with the pool/APP/PPP stuff, the travel powers... Nice to hear you are taking notes!
I need to know now what is already done and waiting for release!

It would be great if we had a second Combat Aura since we already have one.
Aura (normal)
Combat Aura (no aura in normal stance, aura in combat stance)
Advanced Combat Aura(?) (aura in normal stance, different aura - in the same category - in combat stance)

For a feathers aura we just need the leaves aura mechanics, with the feathers for the feathers CC from the animal pack.
Tech is already there.
I would love to have black feathers aura for my black winged succubus.
There are several powers (some of the prestige sprints, temporary invulnerability, world of confusion, I'm sure there are others) which would make nifty auras - any possibility of adding any of them?

VFX Overload
There's just too much VFX on toons, especially when in large battles. All those aura and buff and debuff and power VFX add up to one huge white-out. Even at low levels, I zoomed in to get a good look at Clamor as our 8 member team was fighting her, and she was just a blinding white cloud. Now, at Incarnate level, each new Incarnate power is being treated as a superstar getting really bright and noticeable and flashy VFX which is on top of the already-in-place white out. And even though the effects of the power diminish greatly over time, the VFX is still as bright and strobey as ever. Here's an example of VFX overload at a Mother Ship Raid: And this muddled mess: Yeah, Hasten and SuperSpeed are the worst offenders with blinding yellow VFX flames on fist and feet. But Slide is just as bad as SuperSpeed with a very bright pink cloud. We players asked about two years ago for all those continuing VFX coming from minor buffs from Mayhem/Safegaurd missions to not show and they went! We got some continuous buff auras from toggles to die down. We got alternate VFX light or VFX-less animations for some powers. We got some newly developed VFX from new powersets to be redesigned to be less flashy. Thank you for those things. We need to continue that direction of peeling off the many clashing and blinding layers. Especially for minor buffs, there does not need to be neon flashing and orbiting auras to announce their presence. Even in PvP ("Oh no! That MM's pets have 5% resistance... RUN AWAY!"). Here's VFX overkill signaling that there's a minor buff at work: |
With the actual suggestion part of this:
- Floating Decals Know how there's various chest details like Eye of Horus and Infinity? Why not have an aura variant that has these glowing and floating just slightly off the chest. Maybe even the option for a smaller version in front of the face.
- SG Costume Change emote Do a chest thrust, a huge burst of light followed by a large Floating Decal version of whatever your SG picked as their logo, and then change to the new outfit.
- Digital Stream While the digital stream for AE is pretty cool, the version that sits under the contact's feet is way too bright. A more muted version would be nice. Also, it would be nice to have one available as a player aura.
Still here, even after all this time!
this mightve been said already but i didnt read the previous posts
why do we not have an aura that makes our players look like a ghost??
from creation would be nice also, instead of having to wait till 30 to make a toon thats intended to be a ghost suddenly be one (im sure it could be RPd in at 30 but thats not the point) or have to choose a stealth power and deal with its debuffs.

I know the Epic Archetypes have been said that they may not get power customization but I would like to see perhaps a limited palette for them. I'd really love to have a bright color palette for Peacebringers and a dark color one for Warshades.
It would be great to be able to color the Psi attacks for Fortunatas as well.
