If that's what they're calling pizza in the Cali, I never, EVER want to go back there.

Newsflash: Yet another California Pizza Kitchen has gone up in a ball of nuclear flame. This is the thirteenth one this evening...
Sorry, Hyper. Born and raised in California and I hate that cra... crud, and I refuse to call it pizza.

In 'n Out = okay, but not all that and a bag of chips, as it were.
Five Guys = discovered upon moving to Seattle. Yum.
Culver's = also quite good, and they were damn accommodating to John and me when we were on restricted diets.
Fatburger = generally nom. Depends on the location.

Then there's the pizza thing. I'm from New York. I KNOW New York style pizza. (I also know New York cheesecake.) I laugh long and hard and LOUDLY in places that advertise having either and fail to meet expectations. There was ONE place in ALL of Arizona that made New York style pizza, and that was NYPD Pizza. I have not yet found a Seattle equivalent.

Now I'm hungry, damn it.

We got Five Guys here in North Carolina a few years ago, and they are pretty tasty. I tried In-And-Out last time I was in LA and it was good, but not great. Did not get to try Fatburger, maybe next time.

If you are ever in the Raleigh-Durham area, try CharGrill or CookOut. Absolutely the best burgers anywhere.

I tried In and Out when I flew out to Yuba City, CA for a funeral, and color me unimpressed. Culver's doesn't beat them, but they are local for me so InO was nothing special.

Now my favorite chain burger joint is Fuddruckers. They have buffalo, turkey, ostriche, and black angus burgers, and I love their spiced fries. I've only seen 2 so far, one in Milwaukee and one in Kansas City, so maybe they are only a Midwest kind of chain.

Nope, Fudds is a national chain, just not a huge one. I live in Bay Area in Cali now and before this I was in the DC area in Maryland, I've been to Fudds at both places.

Especially since my homemade burgers are better than any I've ever bought anywhere--not to mention being quicker than waiting in that line. I mean, I knew I lived among crazy people, but it's still disconcerting to have my nose rubbed in it like that video does.

There's two types. The deep-dish which most of you bloody furriners (basically anyone not born and bred in the Chicago area) think of. Plus there's the crispy thin crust Even in the burbs it's hard to find thin crust Chicago Style that's any good.
Truth. But when you find that Chicago Thin Crust that's heavenly. WATCH OUT! It's funny but I don't know any native Chicagoans who eat the deep dish on a regular basis.

Pizza is meant to be eaten in squares darnit!

Fuddruckers is vile.

Just my opinion, of course. I'd take any of the ones we have been talking about over them any day of the week.

I am thoroughly unimpressed with both Steak and Shake and In and Out. If I had to choose one to eat at, I'd go to Steak and Shake, because they at least have options.

I understand the idea of "We do one thing but we do it well," and I'm fine with that, but I just don't feel like In and Out does it well. From what I understand about their business practices and the ingredients they use, they do the types of things I'd like to support, but I can't. I have never been anything but disappointed with a hamburger from In and Out, and they have no other options. Sure, you can order "grilled cheese" but that's just american cheese on a bun. I can't say that sounds the least bit appetizing.

I remember reading an article about 10 years ago or so (maybe longer) about some Neapolitan pizza group that'd come through Chicago. These are the guys insisting that if pizza isn't like 12 inches across and completely made from scratch and baked in a brick oven, it doesn't qualify as "pizza".

One of them go a hold of Chicago Deep Dish. He described it as "An earthquake in my mouth." And not in a good way.

Welcome to the party pal!

We can split the driving. And it's only 13 hours and 5 minutes if you do the speed limit.

Don't come to Atlanta expecting good pizza. So far I have found only a very few places that have anything close to New York style which makes me a sad panda. And when I say close, I mean; "It didn't come back up immediately."

That sounds like Great Plains Burger Company near me. Best tasting burgers I've ever had. Very fresh. They have boxes of potatoes that are cut right after you order them.

Not a fan of Fuddruckers, we have one here and if I"m in the mood for a burger on that end of town, I'll just go across the street to Red Robin.

Yeah. My parents moved down to Florida and they're bemoaning the lack of decent pizza places, though my mom's favorite beef place ships nationally.

Worst pizza I ever had was at California Pizza Kitchen. I can assure you, their pizza is not typical of pizza served in California (or anywhere, I hope)

There's a Fuddruckers in San Diego, too. I ate there once some 20 years ago and didn't much like it. However, I didn't know they have buffalo burgers. I've had buffalo burgers before and I prefer them to beef burgers. Maybe I'll have to check out Fuddruckers again.

Burgers: http://www.redmillburgers.com/

(Oh, almost forgot, I like this place too: http://www.thecounterburger.com/ They have one in Seattle, in Ballard near where a friend lives.)

Donuts: http://www.toppotdoughnuts.com/

Krispy Kreme? In-and-Out? Don't need 'em. ^_^

Fuddruckers and Five Guys aren't bad at all though. ^_^ (Not actually sure if Fuddrucker's is in the Seattle area... the one I remember I visited in Minnesota years ago.)

Pizza in Seattle... hmmm... haven't tried this place in years but they used to be good: http://northlaketavern.com/

Now as for New York... I've had New York bagels and I've never found anything like 'em for sale in Seattle.

So it's just a cake conut? I've never heard it called devil's food donut, but I've had plenty of cake donuts of various varieties.

There's a Culver's right next to the movie theater in my home town. Terrible for you, but delicious (butterburgers are calories onna stick, and they put the 'cream' back in 'ice cream').

I'll second the fast. With the exception of the video above, of course!

To add to the wave of suggestions, there's a pretty good burger place near my home, Square Burger. Named not for the shape of the food, but for the location (town square in McKinney, TX). Juicy burgers, onion strings, sweet potato fries... and some 30-odd beers on tap.

Come to Chicago. They'll deep fry anything here. Twinkies, Snickers bars, etc. Hell, they even deep fry ice cream.

I miss Jack in the Box a lot more than In-N-Out.

(Never particularly fond of Krispy Kreme. *shrug* Then again, I was missing Pollo Tropical just for the fried plantains when I was out west - and missing having a close by Baja Fresh now that I'm back in FL.)

I go to the Texas State Fair almost every year. We've got fried Coca-Cola. I think there's actually a contest to see who can make the weirdest fried dish at the fair.

Also, fried ice cream is common in Tex-Mex and even some American-Asian restaurants (tempura ice cream). Doing a little bit of research, there's a 1952 cookbook with a recipe for fried ice cream; it's nothing new. There's also the Baked Alaska from 1876, a similar dessert using meringue to insulate the ice cream (and baked, rather than fried).

Well, CPK was originally started by a pair of lawyers in Beverley Hills (artificial, fake, glam over substance) so yeah, kind of tells you everything you need to know.

Bay Area in contrast has a some pretty good pizza joints as well as cuisine of every type you can think of. That's the real Cali as far as I'm concerned.

Can't recall In-N-Out's taste quite well enough to compare, but 5 Guys has quite good hamburgers, and they're fairly consistent: had them in Minnesota and Vancouver. Their fries are quite excellent as well.

I think I would say 5 Guys has more of the perfect diner style hamburger, where In-N-Out seemed a little less greasy or something (not that 5 Guys is super greasy, they just cook on a traditional diner grill). But it may be I'm thinking that just because I never have lettuce on my 5 Guys hamburgers.

Still, I'd put them up close to the better burgers I've had in little solo places. If you're ever in the Twin Cities, check out The Convention Grill in Minneapolis... awesome burgers, fries, and malts at that place. 5 Guys gets close to those, I would say.
