A badge only given out in a three hour window?
And it looks like the mods have deleted the thread, rather than allow people to continue pointing out what a horrible idea it is.
he moved it back to a private section as per the thread here

Wow, I missed the train for that drama storm. I can see why the badge community was so P.O.ed...
Here's hoping the solution they come up with is better for those of us who don't have (and don't want) any characters on Freedom.
Main Hero: Chad Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1396 Badges
Main Villain: Evil Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1193 Badges
Mission Architect arcs: Doctor Brainstorm's An Experiment Gone Awry, Arc ID 2093

To be fair, Zwillinger did say that they might extend the badge window to 72 hours, and have the possibility to award the badge at other times.
At any rate, expect an update tomorrow.

The thread full of dissent may have been removed, but the official announcement remains up that sparked it all. That alone tells me that it feels like lip service.

Ok, before I end up getting Perma-Banned, I leave it at this:
I can't log onto Freedom or Virtue. I haven't been able to for quite a long time. My computer instantly crashes, locks up, and screams like a little ******. Making it so I have to try to spend all night rebooting my ******* machine to hope to get a split second of connection long enough to get a badge... kiss off.
Not even going to start on the timing of the event. I might as well live on Centaurian Standard Time for the whacked out chance I'm available when stuff like this happens.
It's being done on all servers (now?) but I still don't understand the Time Conversion for this one:
Wednesday, May 11th, 2011
Time: 10am - 1pm Pacific Time (6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. British Time)
Server: Union
Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Time: 10am - 1pm Pacific Time (4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. British Time)
Server: Defiant
So Union and Defiant have the same start time NA side but not EU side? I am confuzzled. Granted it's a day later but seems odd.

I'm extra confused now. Is the "special account wide badge" being awarded at all of those events also? Or just the Freedom on the 27th?
It looks like the plan was just to award it for the Freedom server event. I can get why they were going for that, since Freedom is the most populated server, in general. It's the same reason that the name collision for globals due to the server list merge favors the NA accounts. The fact that it is inconveniencing to a far greater number of people than the global collision issue, since Freedom's population is only (assuming here based on census snapshots that players have run) the largest plurality of all NA servers is a good reason why this badge, as we were originally told it would be awarded, is really a bad idea. It also breeds a feeling that they are favoring the most-popular server by giving this badge out for attending their event, which will likely be the exact same event that every other server will have already had.

I really hope they do reconsider the time frame for this badge. There is no way that I can set aside a 3-hour window specifically for a badge like that. Life is too busy.

Wait...So I can only get this unnamed badge on May 27th on the freedom server or that I can only get this badge on May 27th if I participated in at least ONE of the server events?
"Monday, May 16th, 2011

Great, I am not available...why must these events be held during school/work and not on the weekends...as one whole allied strike?
I don't have a level 50 anywhere else and I doubt people will want a level 1-10 in their league for this...FML

I was hoping for more of a Rikti invasion style event, which would be an ongoing event for the entire week. A three hour window for each server is pretty small.
My home server is Infinity, which is on Thursday May 19th. I work Thursday nights, so my options are:
1. Take a day off to play in a very time limited event.
2. Miss the event.
Can't say that either option is really appealing to me...
I find your lack of signature disturbing.
I don't mind the Devs trying to come up with some kind of incentive to get people to log on during a specific period of time to do some server stress testing. But making that "incentive" be a badge is a horrible idea for what should be incredibly obvious reasons.
It's amazing how the Devs seem to forget the history of their own game sometimes. Way back during the very first Halloween Event (in 2004) they made the arguable mistake of only running the event for about one week. This meant you only had one week to get the event badges. After enough people "pointed out" that allowing only one week for that event was not really reasonable the Devs have, to my knowledge, never had a Halloween Event that lasted that short a time since. So instead of remembering lessons like these they decide to fall back to a badge earning window of only 3 hours? It really boggles the mind.
I'm encouraged that they are already reconsidering the timing of this badge. But seriously a badge should NEVER have been considered to this kind of scenario in the first place.

I think the problem here has to do with "out with the old, in with the new." While there are still devs who have been here since the beginning, there are so many more that haven't. Certain things that an old dev would have known to focus on gets forgotten among the many problems/issues that they have to deal with. Which is one of the reasons the forums are here....the community has the ability to remind them of what's important to us.

1) The server survives the stress test; everyone participating gets the badge.
2) The server fails the stress test; many players will either get logged out, mapservered to oblivion or the server crashes. Then MANY won't get the badge regardless of them putting in the time to show up.
Well, what happens if the server fails? How are they going to award the badge now? Anyone can say that they were there, just couldn't log in because the server failed. What's the contingency plan? So you promise something and if it doesn't work too bad so sad?
That's what causing some frustration. The promotion was extremely short sighted in its planning.

There might be a specific reason for awarding an "account wide" badge to all players that take part in the Freedom event. What other account wide badge dealt with going to another server? One that all of the badgers have been begging for for years?
My bags are packed and I'm just waiting on my "Passport" to arrive

So, it can go one of two ways:
1) The server survives the stress test; everyone participating gets the badge. 2) The server fails the stress test; many players will either get logged out, mapservered to oblivion or the server crashes. Then MANY won't get the badge regardless of them putting in the time to show up. Well, what happens if the server fails? How are they going to award the badge now? |
I also added to the thread removed how having a badge works against what they want to do: The badgers all agree that as soon as they get their badge, they log out to let others on (and for their alts). Thus, making the event a no-show and the stress test less stressed.
They were incentivizing people *not* sticking around!
It seems they got the message.

Basically this new badge was simply meant to be an enticement to participate in a server stress test, and a pretty shortsighted enticement at that.

Is it just me, or does it seem a poor choice to offer an account wide badge that can only be earned in a three hour window on Freedom server:
info here
Update:link
1) The badge is account wide and will still only be available for the three hour window on Freedom.
2) However, if they manage to get 2500 players on Freedom concurrently during that time slot, they will turn the badge on for ALL (NA and EU) servers over the weekend.
3) They will make the badge available again in a couple of months for something else, but it will still be "rare" (time limited)
4) Turgenev has confirmed that the goal is to get as many people online during that time slot as possible, so if you aren't available during the time but could go AFK somewhere that won't log you out (say a base) beforehand the devs say that would be helpful.
