Considering Making A Scrapper. Help?

So I've played my entire career on heroes as a blaster, I haven't had any other build pass level 20 without getting bored (other than the PB). The addition of Shield defense brought my attention to the scrapper, but I'm having trouble deciding what primary would pair well with this defense.

Also, this idea came up when me and my friend brainstormed the idea of two characters specifically build to duo/team with each other throughout the levels. His favorite build is the Classic "Katana/Regen" and he's a monster with it, after loosing his account a few years ago he wants to rebuild this monster.

Does anyone have a clue as to what primary would mesh well with a Katana/Regen set? I was considering Fire/ because of the AoE attacks and the DoT, but i was also leaning towards broad sword as well for the "sword and shield" theme.

Fire/Shield is an incredibly powerful build. It has good AoE and single target damage.

fire/sd is my favorite because as munki said, its got a great combination of single target and aoe dmg.

Other great combos are elec/sd which has mediocre single target but the best aoe output, and dm/sd which has the weakest aoe of the 3, but the best single target and siphon life which increases sd survivability a lot.

Broadsword is fine, but if you want top end output, I'd suggest one of the 3 I mentioned. If you do go bs, it's got great burst dmg, but mediocre single target and aoe dmg overall. Parry helps with defense, and is very useful while you're leveling, but at lvl 50, a properly io'd sd shouldn't need it any more.

Go with any of these and you'll help your kat/reg buddy out plenty.

Another cool thing about picking either electric or fire for your primary is you can easily make your friend's single target specialist feel bad when fighting standard mobs. With all the AoE goodness all he will really have time to do is hit a boss or two a couple times. And isn't it always fun to show up your friends in a video game?

Once did an all scrapper ITF that happened to have all fire/sd and elec/sd scrappers except for one that was Kat/Regen. He mentioned a few times that he couldn't really do anything because we were killing everything so quickly. Pretty amusing.

I felt that way on my DM/SD, the heavy single-target focus meant that all I did in teams was find a boss, punch 'em once or twice and by then everything was dead.

Then I got Shield Charge, and that feeling went away. Replaced by something warm and fuzzy and giggle-inducing.

So yeah, get some good AoE. It'll be fun, we promise.

I have a 45 BS/SD and never could get into it. I will comment on one thing the others have not, and that is aesthetics!

BS/SD allows you some of the most awesome item customization in the game. You can do anything from the energy tech look, to the classic sword and board look. It is nice.

MA/SD is an end hog (anything MA is imo) but it gives that really nice Cap/USAgent feel. I have seen some really good ones too.

The others listed above are great in all the ways others have mentioned. I just think the above look the best.

Or go Elec/sd and have him going, "Wait for me!" repeatedly. BS/sd is sexy as hell and works well together. Too bad I prefer the speed of Kat over BS.

To partner with a kat/regen, I would recommend an elec/elec.

He has strong single target, you have strong AOE.

For the record: Lightning Rod makes Shield Charge look like it's cute little baby sister.

Awwww, Shield Charge is so cuuuute!

Of course, the elec/sd has both....

I'd still recommend the elec/elec instead, because with reactive, any toon without a damage aura is pretty far behind the AOE damage curve.

I'm going to suggest ELM/SHI, because it'll help your Kat/Reg friend out so much, he'll cry! From boredom...or jealousy. >_>

I have both an Elec/Shield and Fire/Shield scrappers, both IO'd out and to be honest I'd go with the Fire/Shield. The AoE is more than enough to take down mobs, and if you have a decent build with recharge you'll probably be close enough to Elec's AoE output.

It's the single target attacks that you will like more with Fire Melee. Get Reactive Interface and the Destiny heal power and you're laughing.

Now that I'm almost at T4 for all my incarnate powers, I'm even thinking of gutting my Elec/Shield and IOing another 50 to do more incarnate stuff.

Fire/Shield in my opinion is hands down better than Elec/Shield.

she's so gimpy

Here's another vote for fire/sd, if you have some inf to spend it can be a monster. If you don't, it can still be amazing. Fire is cool like that!

Just as a side note, my friend decided to go with an "Earth/psy" dominator instead -_- so if i don't go with AoE he will have turned the tables of who gets the boring side of combat w/o even knowing that u guys suggested he would be the bored one...haha.

@ Mauk, This doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. I love the feel of EM, my friend has an EM/EA brute and i love chain induction, it's fun to watch...im anxious to see what its like to have lightning rod..

Do you think it would be possible to bind BOTH TP powers to the L Click button on the mouse, and just click once and then click again just like having multiple toggles binded to one key..? or might it be easier to bind lightning rod to left, and shield charge to the right. lol

I do love this suggestion, and I'll defiantly take your suggestion for Reactive interface just because the resistance debuff is hard to come by. What's swaying me away from fire/ is that I have a DP/Fire blapper, so i'm worried that playing on a fire/shield will feel the same, and even though it IS fun...i'd rather not repeat the same attacks paired with a different lover, so to speak.

Not sure how a blapper would play the same as a fire/shield? On a well built fire/Shield you basically are a team of 8. You barely get touched, but you hit so hard and frequently that nothing is alive long enough to take you down. Anything below an AV is laughable to my fire/shield.

Lightning rod is fun, but Elec/Shield is good basically for just burst AoE. You'll find the single target attacking frustrating while you wait for the big AoEs to recharge. If you want to do ungodly AoE, roll a Fire/Mental, or Arch/Mental blasters. But thats just my opinion.

My scrapper is em/sd/fire, and I find that I really lean on my fire blast as part of my single target attack chain, and when I exempt down I miss it quite a bit. But as far as AoE goes, nothing to complain about. ^_^

I have a fire melee/sd scrapper I'm working up also, I can see where I'd prefer that in some situations. With EM, I find that I'm absolutely in love with Lighting Rod but the rest of the set does not excite me overly much. Lightning Rod is the best AoE a scrapper can have though, so it makes up for a lot. ^_^

That does sound really appealing, but what i meant was it's like the same powers in a different place. Ya know? Like having two guys with fire mele attacks might get boring quick.

My friend had one of those at one point before he gave his account away, that toon was a MONSTER. I know the damage that they can cause

I was just looking over the builds and has anyone gone with a Kinetic Mele/Shield Defence scrapper?

There's at least one build in the build's thread. I just have a low level one. My only comment is Kin's animations really don't go well with /sd. One paper it should be decent with the stacking of +dmg buffs and -dmg debuffs. PS and SC don't play as well since PS needs to be built up and SC is pure burst damage. I just think Kin works better elsewhere despite the on paper synergy.
