Obsoleted by Incarnate powers
Well ...
I'm pretty sure that I said that /FF/ is laidback -- it's FAR less clicky than kin and there's less micromanagement than there is with any other (de)buff set I can think of. FWIW, I doubt we'll see the devs ever do a set by set balance pass on the (de)buff sets (the fact they haven't done so while the have on virtually every other variety of primary / secondary speaks volumes -- my guess is that data mining shows little overall difference in performance). What is more likely, IME, is that the devs will continue to throw bones to underused powers -- IIRC, Force Bubble is useful in either Tin Mage or Apex. Not that I've seen many FF Incarnates. |
I plan to be an FF Incarnate, though. It's my favorite character to play as, and I know exactly where her limits are and how to get away with breaking them anyway.

You know... Oddly enough, I don't mind homogeneity of classes. I've actually been arguing for a game structure where all classes have "combat" as a mandatory speciality and then one or two other specialities beyond that. So, with that in mind, the Incarnate powers do seem to achieve that.
What I mean is - I hate Blasters (which was quite a revelation after seven ******* years of playing them), yet I can potentially get characters who are strong fighters by design, yet still have nukes, and maybe even some support powers. That doesn't sound too bad.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm pretty sure if I were to park my forcefielder on an exit point with Force Bubble up in the BAF trial, no minion would get withing 30 ft. of that. Get two forcefielders with Force Bubble and all minions are neutralized, leaving just the lieutenants that ignore Repel effects. That could make the job a lot easier for the hunt team(s).

Force Bubble is useful on Tin Mage during the fight with Neutron.

Again, see a rad superteam. All of them can rez, heal, debuff, buff, damage. That doesn't make either of them obsolete. The more the merrier.
It's not really possible for characters to be obsolete in this game - it is possible for players to become so, however. As the range of abilities widen, it's possible some players who, rather than playing somewhat skillfully, relied on the crutch of playing something different others disliked to play themselves but enjoyed playing with won't have that number-based specificity and will be ignored in favor of better players. If it happens, I can only see that as a good thing ; for that matter, we already see it a bit in the iTrials where understanding you have to kill the two AVs at once or using your temp powers matters more than how many hit points your heal can restore.

![]() Okay for you tl;dr people, listen up -- It's not whether your incarnate powers help your character. It's whether you are made obsolete by the powers on the rest of your team. All ATs can now buff, rez, and nuke. Is that healthy for the game? |
The idea that a team must be composed of specialists each with their own area of powers should be taken out into a field and staked through the heart.

I was just on a PUG group where my offer of Accelerated Metabolism was laughed at. Then a scrapper cast a Destiny buff that was about 10x better.
This is terrible game design. In my opinion it will be the end of this game. It's certainly diminishing it for me.

I like playing support characters. You are describing a game in which players no longer need support.

i make stuff...
Yes the Incarnate system is healthy for the game. Not everyone is going to use it to make their characters capable of a little everything. Some are going to use it to specialize further into their archetype's specialty. Take my main Crim the Cold.
Crim the Cold is a Fire/Mental Blaster. His IO sets currently make him have capped hp, 41.5% damage before assault is added in, around 75% extra accuracy, 95% recharge, and so on and so forth. His Alpha is Musculature, currently the rare core that gives 45% or 22.5% for ED capped powers. He has Inferno and it averages around 2k damage with build up and aim.
My goal with him is to make him to as much damage as often as possible. That goal has been proceeding well beyond my expectations. I'm not sure what use I will have for the Lore pets but I'm sure I'll find something. The other slots I know what I'm putting in them.
Judgement will be Ion Core Final Judgement. 40 target nuke 621.122 damage and a 20% chance for 232.9135 damage. (Musculature alpha added in) Yes Please!
Interface will be Reactive Radial Flawless Interface: 25% -RES, 75% moderate fire DoT. More damage and -res for more damage, both achieve my goal.
Destiny will be Ageless Core Epiphany: +100% end, +70% rech first 10s, 40% next 20s, 20% next 30s, 10% last 60s (120s total), +800% recov first 10s, 300% next 20s, 200% next 30s, 100% last 60s (120s total), 60ft radius. Oh My God I get to use Aim, Build up, Ion Judgement, and Inferno, wipe out a huge amount of enemies possibly even bosses, use Ageless Destiny and regain all my endurance, have a big boost to my recharge, and while I may not be able to recover for 20 seconds (it depends on if I use Drain Psyche) I wont use up my entire endurance bar in those 20 seconds and the boosted recovery afterwards will repair any damage I do my blue bar during that time.
Oh... wait a second... Ageless hits the whole team? So... all the blasters on my team can use their nukes simultaneously... and keep doing what they do best afterwards?
You may fire when ready commander.
Or to put this in a way that people who use lol speak can understand...

Why not? It would eliminate Tyrant and all his Praetors, destroy the Praetoreian Hamidon, end the terrorist faction of the resistance, and prevent a potential drain on Paragon City's economy from war refugees.
Just kidding! Don't hit me with the winkie emoticon. I promise to nuke responsibly.

Yeah, I'm bummed a bit by the enormity of the incarnate abilities too.
Having just got my Uncommon Judgement, I can happily say, I'm not ditching my Nuke for anything.
I got it last night, and decided to run a couple of tip missions, with the idea that I'd use it as often as it recharged, jumping into the middle of a fresh spawn and firing it off. Is it powerful? Yes. Am I intending to use it lots? Yes. Am I going to keep my slowly-getting-Purpled Nuke? Hell yes. It does more damage. Sure, it has a crash. But I tend to team with a friendly /Kin 'troller who's always ready to fill me up with Transference. And I tend to only use my Nuke on larger teams when the amount of damage it can dish out makes the end-crash worth it. My Judgement power is going to be used a lot more, certainly, but my beautiful, beautiful Nuke still has a place. |
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
Just an update on the blaster I was talking about above.
I've gotten every slot to tier 3 except for judgment. Yesterday I ran into a problem. My best guess is that I do too much damage. I ran several BAF tirals yesterday. The ones I ran in the morning I was taking care of the ambushes during a few master run attempts(damn lag during the prisoner phase). In the afternoon during about 4 different master run attempts I was placed on one of the AVs during the final phase. Whichever AV I was placed on would get seriously out of balance, 15-25% less than the other, with the others health in about 20-40 seconds. Normally I would say that the whole team I was on was just awesome and the team on the other AV just needed improvement. However, the last run I did the leader asked me to switch AVs in an attempt to balance the damage being done to the AVs. As soon as I switched over to the other AV the same thing happenned again. It took about 30 seconds but the other AV caught up with and then got seriously out of balance very quickly. The other progressed at an average rate, about the same speed the other team was going when I wasn't over there. The AVs ended up repowering and we tried it again. Once again whichever AV I was on would have its health drop far faster than the other. The league leader caught on and sent me over to the ambush team. From there they had no problem balancing the AV's health and finishing the trial.
Anyways after the trial we were sitting around in Pocket D and some of the other players asked what the hell was happenning with AVs. The league leader explained that I did to much damage and that when I was moved over to the ambush team the balance problems disappeared. Most of the players were poking a little fun at me or congratulating me on for building such a damaging character. Two players exploded though. I don't keep chat logs so to summarize the paragraph they wrote in their outrage they asked why in the hell I couldnt see that the AV health was getting to low and slow up my attacking. Apparently I cause them to lose some very valuable minutes of their lives and they think I should lrn2play.
So am I a bad player because my blaster does too much damage and I didn't notice that fact until it was pointed out to me. That and as a Blaster shouldn't I be shaking my head disapprovingly at the concept of too much damage.

in a game where ANY team of 8 makes all content trivial, the the implementation of leagues obsoleted everyone...... with enough of any AT, the use for other AT's is negligible. but this game has never been about the holy trinity of MMO'ing, and any full team will work, therefore the AT's exist strictly for YOUR benefit, as something you want to play, not as a needed asset for someone else. so play what you like, enjoy it, and stop stressing over game mechanics in game where mechanics always came second.
Oh yeah, that was the time that girl got her whatchamacallit stuck in that guys dooblickitz and then what his name did that thing with the lizards and it cleared right up.
screw your joke, i want "FREEM"
What IS funny though is that a standard level 50 mission is currently 5 to 10 times easier than what teams face at level 10 in Praetoria. This happens in part because once you hit 50 any incentive to fight +level enemies goes away. But it's also because the developers worked hard to increase the difficulty level in the Praet zone, while simulataneously buffing level 50s to the point that pre-existing tasks went from "very easy" to "LOL."
So now the level 50 game, outside of a few TFs and raids, is pretty much a wash for me. This is why I posted a few days ago that I wish enemies above level 50 had something they would drop to make them more attractive targets.

A good Blaster, or player, even, is to be situationally aware, understand the mission objective, work with other players to form a cohesive team, and achieve the mission goals. Mindlessly blasting away oblivious to the mission objective is not being a good Blaster nor a good player.
I'd say both parties are somewhat wrong here. Slowing down, as other players suggested, doesn't make any sense. You can just switch targets and even it out yourself as needed, even if it means switching every few seconds.
Yes, all ATs can nuke. But unless you are just standing around doing nothing for 90 seconds between nuking, you still have a role to play on the team.
Same with the buffs. They are on a pretty long timer.....are you just leeching while that recharges, or are you using the powers your characters has always had in the meantime?
The only way any character is going to be made obsolte by Incarnate powers is if we get enough Incarnate powers to where we can run entire missions or TFs using nothing BUT Incarnate powers, and I don't see that happening.
Your character still has their role, just because someone else can do something similar once in a while doesn't make you obsolete. That's like saying a luggage rack on a sedan makes trucks, SUVs, and minivans obsolete because they can be used to haul things.
