Same issue here, brand new imac with radeon hd5750 card, black screen occurs right after hitting accept, i have left it sitting for about 30 minutes and have also done everything suggested in forums to no avail, i have sent my profile to ncsoft as well.
Alright, I launched the game, got to the black screen and then walked away. I did some errands and watched some TV. Totally forgot I had launched the game and when I went into the room, what did I see? A LOG-IN SCREEN!!!!
I was gone about 2 hours. So somewhere in that 2 hours the black screen went away. I have not logged off since I got on, but I will see a bit later if I can restart the game and how long it takes to sit in the black screen. But I am playing right now, so it will go away....maybe in 2 hours |

I also let it simmer for an hour with no results. I suppose I can just let it go all night and see what happens. We can just think of it as a queue!
Just don't stare to long into the black screen, or it might stare back...

I timed starting up CoH on my PC vs my Mac specifically because the PC has a newer ATI video:
PC (Windows 7, Core i5, 4MB, ATI Radeon HD 6800) - 22.4 sec
Mac (Macbook Pro Core i7, 10.6.7, 4MB, nVidia Geforce 330M GT) - 55.2 sec
Note that's even with the Mac having an edge because it's using a Seagate hybrid hard drive with 4 MB SSD built in.
The conclusion is though I'm not stuck with a black screen, CoH is starting up much more slowly than it used to on the Mac. The startup times used to be about even.
P.S. Those of you with the black screen - can you switch to windowed mode with Cmd-Enter while you're looking at the black screen with the cursor?

I left the game up and running. Still have the black screen after 20 minutes. I sent support my system profile this morning. Hopefully this gets resolved soon(ish). |

Both the old launcher and new launcher worked just fine. This is telling me it is an issue with the latest release and mac drivers and the ATI card.

I got the black screen on my Inspiron laptop. Had to use task manager to close the program. Reloaded and worked the second time. Strange.
They asked me to do the same thing.

I have bootcamp dual boot with Vista. I don't have City installed on Vista, although if this doesn't get resolved soon, I may bite the bullet. I'm currently downloading the Mac test server. Seems like some people have had success with that.
I will do that as soon as I can. Once I logged on, I wanted to play. After about several hours, one failed Lambda run, one failed BAF run and one successful "The Sky is Falling" TF, the client crashed. I am not waiting for the black screen to go away again on this new relaunch.

The important part though is there's nothing after the Drive F: error, which means the black screen problem possibly is caused by the game application itself, and not Cider. That means a possibly shorter wait for a fix**!
** Note: There are no guarantees with bugs like this until it's fixed.

Just for argument's sake - can you try removing Smart Crash Reports? The location of it is above in the log you posted. Toss it in the trash, reboot, then try starting CoH again.

Just so you know, I relaunched after my crash. After about 1 1/2-ish I still had a Black Screen. I went to bed, when I woke up CoH was sitting in its Log-in screen.
But I will remove the Smart Crash Reports and launch again.
Took my computer 3 hours 20 minutes to reach the Log In screen.
I suggest NOT watching "Daywalkers" whilst waiting to log in; it's not a good film.

At the suggestion of the support folks at NCSoft, I installed the test client, and modified it to connect to the live servers. Thus far it resolves the black screen issue.
Here's how to modify it. I'd be curious to see if this works for others as well.
f you are currently connecting to the test servers, please try the following to connect to the live servers:
1. Open your Hard drive.
2. Open Applications.
3. Control-Click on the City of Heroes.app and choose "Show package contents".
4. Open Contents.
Now, I would like you to modify the info.plist file that is located in the Contents folder and remove the following lines:
<key>CiderGameOptions</key> <string>-- cohupdater.exe -test</string>
Also, please open a ticket to let the devs know if this works or not. It may get us a fix much faster.

Incidentally, I stumbled across another symptom that may be of help in troubleshooting this issue. I noticed that after you select a character and click on the enter CoH button, if you switch from fullscreen to windowed mode, then back, it will result in a black screen. Here's how to replicate it: 1. launch CoH, login, select a server, select a character, then click Enter City of Heroes 2. Switch from fullscreen to windowed mode 3. Switch from windowed to fullscreen mode Here are some additional findings: 1. Prior to clicking the Enter City of Heroes button after selecting a character, if you switch between fullscreen and windowed mode, screens are rendered normally. This is true for the login, server selection and character selection screens. 2. After you select a character and click on the Enter City of Heroes button, if you logout to the character screen, server select screen, or login screen, then attempt to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode, it will result in a black screen in fullscreen mode. Additionally, screens will render properly in windowed mode, but not fullscreen. 3. It appears that the only way to have the client work properly after switching between fullscreen and windowed mode, while logged in on a character, is to restart the client. 4. In the character selection screen, you can select any number of characters (in my test, I selected each character I have on Freedom twice, and switched between fullscreen and windowed mode each time) without getting the black screen. It's only after clicking the Enter City of Heroes button that the problem starts. |

I downloaded the Mac test server last night. After hitting "I Accept", I was able to log into the test server. I updated my ticket to reflect that.
Everyone make sure to put in a support ticket about this - I'm not certain they realize how global this problem is.
From the sound of it (conjecture mode) - it seems to be an issue for people with newer ATI cards. Y'know, the ones they wanted us to get so we could run in Ultra Mode....
