I've tried the Safe Mode tactic. No good. Normal or Safe Mode, after you hit "I Agree" on the Launcher, the screen goes black instead of going to the splash screen and never gets you to the Log-in screen. Once you hit "I Agree" it goes Black.

Cuppa,

Support suggested the same thing. I tried that and I get the same thing; all I can see is my cursor. I have to command+tab to get to the desktop. I sent support the update to the safe mode suggestion, awaiting their reply at this point.

Manga, have you tried getting the black screen on another one of your macs? I think it's something to do with the issue itself. I suspect we'll all have to wait for the next patch (and me maybe never).

say hi to triumph for me T_T

basically, if you see a miki on Triumph, it's probably cute and it's probably me.

Huge thanks to cuppamanga and all the folks in the mac help forum for prolonging my borrowed time on this game.

There was a small patch update today on CoH, but it did not resolve the Black Screen for me. Must be a fix for other issues.

Everyone: I may have found a similar older report to this current black screen issue. I'd like to see if it's the same one - so leave the black screen on and get a cup of coffee or something, give it up to about 20 minutes. See if the login screen eventually appears.

I'm using an nvidia-based Macbook Pro and I *do* see a black screen at first. It lasts maybe 2-3 minutes, but the login screen *does* appear eventually.

Cuppa,

I left the game up and running. Still have the black screen after 20 minutes. I sent support my system profile this morning. Hopefully this gets resolved soon(ish).

Just loaded the patch. Now the game will not even load.

This is so strange! i20 fixed the black screen issue for me. I was having black screen issue after the last patch, but found if i deleted certain folders from my preferences file before i ran the launcher, it would load correctly. Don't have to do that now, it just comes up right, of course the servers are down so it doesn't really help much.

Anyway, the files i was deleting were in user>library>preferences>City of Heroes Preferences, folder/filenames = wineserver-(username)-MacBook.local-user, p_drive, and ftfontcache. I tried deleting my entire CoH Preference folder but it wouldn't let me, so i put each item back until it would launch, the 3 listed above were the only ones it would launch without.

Before that, I was looking in my Activity Monitor during launch and ending some processes that started up after City of Heroes was launched, then force quitting CoH from there, then relaunching CoH. This would sometimes help. It might be interesting to watch the Activity Monitor while this issue is happening to see what processes are being activated after CoH. The ones i was seeing pop up that I noticed and quit before relaunch were cvmsComp_x86_64 and cvmsComp _i(some number I can't remember). After i20, I no longer see these processes in my activity monitor after launching CoH, even if they are there before I launch. The only extra process that pops up is wineserver. So you guys getting the black screen try watching that Activity Monitor and see if you notice anything. Might be interesting.

Update: I sent in my System Profile report this morning, as requested by technical support. I just got a response requesting that I try the Mac Public Test Server client on my system. I will start downloading that client tonight after work and then give it a go tomorrow morning.

Ya know, I remain rather impressed by the high quality of technical support NCsoft provides. Just sayin'.

I just remembered something else. The first time I had a black screen issue, it was caused by having vidiot maps installed. Once i removed the maps, no black screen. Its something else to think about. Its easy enough to remove them and try launching, can always put them back in. Control click on CoH application and pick "show package contents". Then go to contents>resources>transgaming>c_drive>coh and delete the Data folder. You can go to your trash can and put it back if there is no change.

Not for nothing but why don't they go out and pick up a Mac with ATI card and try it out themselves and see if it works. Why should we, as I am getting the same request be the guinea pigs.

IF they want me to test the game for them, they need to pay me or offer me something like a free month of time for the work. At the end of the day when it is all said and done this is a business. I don't expect to go to the car mechanic and change my own oil or rotate my own tires. That's why I went there in the first place. They put out the mac client. They charged me to buy the mac client. They need to fix this not me.

But I commend you and say thank you for doing what your doing because I know for sure they won't take the time out to say thank you. ( well they will now that I said it )

Its not that YB, because several already did a fresh install. So Vidiot map is not gonna be there.

If I could convince Paragon Studios to buy me one of the 2011 Macbook Pros I'd do lots of ATI testing. But that's not all that likely, so mostly I look for cues (certain bugs that tend to appear with nVidia and signal possible ATI problems). There were some potential ones that *seemed* to be fixed with Open Beta. This black screen bug caught me by surprise as much as it did the devs.

Much as I respec what manga does, I have to agree with this guy. The devs really need to test stuff like this out themselves. It's like that mouse bug back in the autumn. That was a nightmare!

At least one of the devs (maybe more) were given the same model Macbook Pro I have, with the nVidia graphics.

I think (I don't know for sure, but I may have heard briefly) since then they got at least one ATI-based one in QA - but remember, QA is after-the-fact, after something bad is discovered, and most of the devs who work on the Mac client pull double-duty with something else involved with the game and often don't think to toss the current Mac build to QA to be tested thoroughly on several models.

I'm not trying to make excuses for them, just stating the situation as I understand it.

Also, usually during betas I find I'm the only one testing on a Mac, and that kind of makes me, more or less, the last stop when it comes to finding really nasty issues before they go live. That doesn't make me feel powerful - it's actually a lot of pressure, and I feel a little bad when something I missed or was unable to test makes it through. I welcome any other Mac players, especially those with some troubleshooting experience, to volunteer and share both the work and the glory.

P.S. As far as the above goes, I do have a list of tests I go through after every large test patch before it goes live. Even with those, success sometimes don't translate to other models.

Well, still getting BlackScreen on live servers. Just for grins I did try the test server and got to signin. Unfortunately it appears test server is still closed to the public.

Anyone know how to "supspend" your account? I read about it ages ago but didn't see much use for it, until now anyways. Although if they have test server functioning maybe its just a matter of time til it goes live?

I did try to get on the open Beta and had the same issue I'm seeing now. I attributed it to a bad download, or a botched modification of the plist. I'm wishing I'd followed up on it now.

Alright, I launched the game, got to the black screen and then walked away. I did some errands and watched some TV. Totally forgot I had launched the game and when I went into the room, what did I see? A LOG-IN SCREEN!!!!

I was gone about 2 hours. So somewhere in that 2 hours the black screen went away. I have not logged off since I got on, but I will see a bit later if I can restart the game and how long it takes to sit in the black screen.

But I am playing right now, so it will go away....maybe in 2 hours
