Still crashing often - if anything, it has gotten worse since i21. I hit reload gfx like it's a morphine drip, I still will just randomly drop from the game, sometimes with an assertion failure, sometimes not.
It really annoys me that I spend so much money on this game, and it seems like they can't be bothered to fix a major problem plaguing a significant sub-section of their clientelle....

I had that problem with the previous issue. Seems to be working fine with 21, though. Only advice I ever had was "don't tab out, cause you aren't getting back in."
Someone claimed it would work OK when you where on a 2D screen. Try opening up your character's ID card, and then tabbing out and in. -
I have passed this problem along to tech support while discussing the current "i20 broke the game for newer macs" issue. It has been going on since at least i19. Send tickets to tech support, just in case. Would love to be able to window in and out without quitting the game.
-
test client seems to be working for me. Not spectacularly, and all my options are reset, but at least I can get on a bit and fiddle around.
(Noted that I'm still having the issue with switching between windowed mode and full screen, though.) -
Everyone make sure to put in a support ticket about this - I'm not certain they realize how global this problem is.
From the sound of it (conjecture mode) - it seems to be an issue for people with newer ATI cards. Y'know, the ones they wanted us to get so we could run in Ultra Mode.... -
Same issue. i20, now game just goes to black
Newish MacPro. Ati Radeon 5870
I'm on edition 4462 - I'm assuming that is the newest one.
Sending ticket now.
These repeated mac graphics issues are starting to annoy me. -
Been having that same issue - have the newest version of the game (Unless it has been changed in the last month or so.)
-
El - I put reloadgfx on a keybind to save time, and it seems to be keeping me much more stable - as long as I remember to hit it regularly. Hope it is a proper band-aid for you too!
Gavin - Thanks! I'll give that a shot next time. -
I don't think you get double hasten, but I believe refreshing it before the previous one ends prevents the endurance crash.
-
Since 19.5 came out I'm getting an occasional graphics glitch - when I zone in, All I see are the backgrounds and auras. No people, not streets, not even my own character - just the war wall and outer art.
reloadgfx does not fix it, if I manage to get out of the zone (Happened last time going out of the SG base), and I re-enter, problem is still there. I have to quit the game to fix it. -
Same memory leak issue (it appears). In activity monitor, memory kept rising - somewhere over 2 gb the game just disappears and I'm staring at my desktop. reloadgfx seems to be keeping it stable (short term at least).

I'm still crashing quite regularly.
I turned off Geometry Buffers, FSAA, and Ambient Occlusion.
I downloaded the newest version of the game, and trashed my preferences. I've made sure all of the system software is up to date.
And the game just randomly quits out on me. I don't even get an error message - I'm just no longer playing. This is getting very frustrating - I don't think I've gone longer than 40 minutes without it crashing. And it is random - I've been perfectly stable in huge team battles, yet the last time I crashed I was staring at the levelling window in a fairly inactive bit of Praetoria....
Am I missing something obvious? -
I have fixed the sound issue - took your troubleshooting advice and installed the newest version of the game.
But I am still crashing unexpectedly. Turned off Geometry buffers, FSAA, and Ambient Occlusion - still just randomly crashing out of the game with no error message or warning.
And now I can't even get into the game. Crashed, got the patch update, now it says it can't communicate with the servers. (I'm hoping this will right itself with the Tuesday morning maintenance - doesn't help the SG event I'm suppossed to be running Now, but what can you do?) -
I think you summed that up perfectly, Cuppa.
I use a mac partly because it is what I have always used at home. At work we have PC's. I prefer my mac. Your mileage may vary.
Ended up going with Option 3, btw. Learning that you can't update the processor made me decide to go big.
Just set it up last night - Ultra mode is gorgeous!
(Now I just have to tweak settings and figure out why my sound is all screwed up - hence my current trip to this forum!)
Thanks again. -
Did not know the processor wasn't upgradable. (Miss my old beige box Frankenmac now....)
Thank you! That is exactly what I was wondering about - all the new processors get me confused - no longer apples to apples comparisons.
Makes me think more about option 3 again - I like to keep my computers for a long time the more powerful the start point, the longer it takes for them to become useless. The $900 dollar price difference still hurts a bit though. I'll definately nose around a bit more for deals. -
The prices I found where the best I could muster - Apple refurbs or not. (although it never hurts to double-check
)
I'm more concerned with what the actual performance of the various types of chips. How much faster is a 2.66 Xeon vs a 2.16 2core duo vs a 3.6 i5 processor, etc? And how much will it impact my game v the graphics card choices? -
So, it is high time for me to get a new mac. I have the cash, and am chomping at the bit. Only problem being I'm not sure which way to go.
I have about 3 options in mind, but am no longer tech savy enough to know the power/performance difference between the various processors out there. So any input would be appreciated.
Things to know - limited desk space, I have my computer linked to my 46"Samsung and AV system, and the current heaviest usage I have is COH. I really want to go nuts in Ultra-mode. And I want to stay with my macs.
Option 1: Tricked out imac 21.5" 3.6ghz i5 Intel Core 8gb ram, 512 mb ATI Radeon HD 5670
Pro - cheapest option
Con - 'weakest' graphics card, and cannot be upgaded.
Option 2: Previous Generation Mac Pro 4 core. 2.66 Quad Core "Nehalem" Xeon processor, 8 gb ram, 1gb ATI Radeon HD 5870
Pro- Less expensive than option 3 (~$500 more than option 1, not counting a small lcd monitor) Best graphics card. Upgradeable in the future.
Cons: 2.66 ghz seems a bit slow (my current imac is a 2.16 ghz Intel 2 core duo). May not come with keyboard or mouse. (Minor issue at worst)
Option 3: Go nuts with a lower/mid end new Mac Pro 4 core. 3.2 ghz Quad Core "Nehalem" Xeon processor, 8 gb ram, 1gb ATI Radeon HD 5870
Pro- Upgadeble. Very powerful setup.
Cons - Really. Damned. Expensive. (About $1400 more than Option 1, not counting a small LCD monitor.)
If anyone knows the real power/performance differences between these machines and the graphics card involved to help me figure out what's going to give me the most 'bang for the buck', it would be greatly appreciated.
(current system is an old imac 2.16 ghz intel 2 duo core processor, 3 gb ram (maxed), 256mb ATI x1600. Blows up if I even think about Ultra mode, and starts to overheat as I play on level 50 steamrolling teams. )
Thanks in advance! -
It is weird. I was set up on the Test Server previously. When I tried to get on yesterday, the uploader "fixed" my files, and now I go to the live servers....
I'll see if I can try the fix above. Just wanted to share it as more info for you, Cuppa. -
I know they posted the video card requirements, but I am wondering if those are the same for a mac as for a pc?
As someone unsure of what the video card numbers actually mean, would it be possible for someone to 'dumb it down' for me?
(I'm already pretty sure my ATI 256 mb x1600 is out of the running on Ultra, but am not sure I want to buy a whole new computer right now... Would running Ultra Mode melt the card? :\ ) -
Well, I have achieved a minor victory at least.
Last night I was able to use the headset for Teamspeek, while leaving the game sound through my av system. I was able to adjust the speaker volumes and mic sensitivity so I could just leave it on voice activation without others hearing the game. (I'll be testing it on Ventrillo later on.)
I'm going to try to tweak it some more in hopes of eventually getting the game on my headset (it sounded great on it for the minute or so before it breaks the game).
Thanks to everyone for their help! -
I tried that after the sound died - no effect.
Maybe I'll switch to compatibility, then try the headphones.... thanks. -
Fry- I was wondering if that might work - it will mean I'll have to set it to push to talk (which I never like), but it beats no sound.
Cuppa - thanks, I'll have to try disconnecting everything but the wireless keyboard/mouse (kinda need that to work). -
I tried searching the forum, and don't see this addressed:
I have been trying to get a usb headset to work with COH. The first set had horrible sound quality and the mic did not work. (It was a cheap jWin.) That seemed to be universal on the mac.
I then picked up a Logitech headset (Clearcomfort Pro iirc) - sounds great, mic works well - until I get on COH. Then it works for a minute or two, then all the sound cuts out. I have to restart the game to even get the sound back through my speakers. iTunes still worked even when the sound was dead on the game.
I'm running on a late 06 imac, with Snow Leopard - everything seems to be updated/verified. 3D sound is not on in game. There are no drivers for the headset on the Logitech site.
Any ideas? I really don't want to have to buy a Third headset just to use TeamSpeex or Ventrillo....
Thanks
