Minimum requirements for Ultra Mode
I can't say for sure, as...well, nobody really knows what the Mac requirements will be yet.
It depends on a few factors, including system hardware, operating system software, and how Transgaming's Cider works/performs with Ultra mode.
If I had to guess right now, I'd say you stand the best chance for Ultra support if you're using a Mac that has discrete video - not the integrated Intel models, or the nVidia 9400M "shared" graphics.

I'm hoping that my Nvidia 9600m gt will get the job done.
Positron's i13 letter: We are trying to make PvP more accessible to new players, while giving experienced PvP'ers the advantage that comes with formulating tactics around the new systems we're putting in place. PvP from now on will be on our priority list. If something isn't working out, we'll be in there tweaking it and making it work, for the entire future of the product, not just Issue 13.
It won't.
I'm afraid I can't talk about what exactly what goes on in the Cedega 8 engine testing, but I can tell you that right now, you won't be seeing magical performance gains running atop a *nix system. If everything works right, you won't be seeing annoying performance loss either.
As it stands now, the starting for Ultra Mode on Cider is pretty going to be the same as the starting point for Windows. RadeonHD 4850, Geforce 9800 GTX / Geforce GTS 250.
I know they posted the video card requirements, but I am wondering if those are the same for a mac as for a pc?
As someone unsure of what the video card numbers actually mean, would it be possible for someone to 'dumb it down' for me? (I'm already pretty sure my ATI 256 mb x1600 is out of the running on Ultra, but am not sure I want to buy a whole new computer right now... Would running Ultra Mode melt the card? :\ ) |
"One day we all may see each other elsewhere. In Tyria, in Azeroth. We may pass each other and never know it. And that's sad. But if nothing else, we'll still have Rhode Island."
There's a little more complexity involved than simply which kind of video your Mac has. I can only say with certainty that the best *chance* you have is if your Mac has discrete video. I'm only going that far right now because I'd rather not fuel speculation when it could lead to disappointment later.
For those interested though, the complexity is due to the fact that there are so many layers involved. There's the video processor itself; the OpenGL layer of MacOS X; Transgaming's Cider; and then City of Heroes.
As of right now, there's no information of whether MacOS X will support the OpenGL instructions needed for Ultra. There's no information on whether Transgaming has already added support for those instructions, or if they plan to. And while there's information about "optimal" video hardware for Ultra, there's no info yet on whether Ultra can be used in a more limited fashion on less than optimal hardware.
And there's also the possibility, of course, that Apple will release an entirely new suite of Macs, or a new MacOS X with better OpenGL support, before Ultra even hits open beta.
Therefore, any predictions right now would be premature.
