Speedster powers?

I've always wanted to make a speedster theme character, but I could never find a good power set combo. I've already got a MA/SR, so maybe something with electricity would be good. Any suggestions?

I'd go with Kinetic Melee since you didn't mention you already had that. Or anything Electricity as you alluded to.

KM already sounds like a race car. Might as well attach it to a speedster!

Back in 04, the best option I found for my speedster was a MA/SR Scrapper. If I was creating it now from scratch I might throw in /Elec with MA or maybe an Elec/SR Brute.

I'd love it if we one day get a speedster-specific powerset. Like Speed Melee or something like that.

I would kill for an actual speedster power set.

I have The Accelerated Man, a Fire/Super Reflexes Scrapper. His fire attacks are supposed to be due to him using the same powers that speed up his body to accelerate the random motions of nearby air molecules until they become flame.

Synaptic Shock is the product of an attempt to duplicate Synapse's powers; an Elec/SR Stalker. Better single target damage than other Electric melee users.

Another possibility would be Dual Blades/SR; DB looks very fast to me with all the fancy slashing animations.

Go with DM/SR then take hasten, get the Sands of Mu, then flurry from super speed. At that point you could just keep stacking them on top of each other.

I guess EleA could work also.

That's been a personal challenge for a long time with me. I don't know why, but I've had this thing in mind to create something that represents the 'perfect' speedster character.

I've tried a lot of AT/power combos with mixed results.

My favorites have been:

Living Lightspeed- Illusion/Kinetic Controller: Made him a kind of Scrap'troller and tried to get the costume to match with the Phantom Army under the concept of "he's so fast you see more than one of him". Took Fighting, and of course Super Speed. Since I primarily solo with him I had fun with it and got a number of melee powers so he can fight alongside his multiple selves, the flash powers making them useful when matched with Containment.

Solarstream- Fire Melee/Super Reflexes Scrapper: Fairly straightforward. Fire has some pretty fast attacks, good AoE's, and SR because he's moving so fast he can avoid blows. Only thing that stands out that I found made this guy feel faster is I also took Teleport and keybinded it to my middle button on my mouse. That "burst of speed so fast you can't see him move" feel. Great to pop in and fire off your AoE's into another group. This is an older character; in the 'woulda', could'a, should'a category, I may have made him shield for the 'shield charge' if it had been available at the time for the same reason.

My most recent and the one that captivated me the most (and it's on my home server)

ImpulseIV- Electric Control/Kinetic Controller: Before Electric Control came out I made this guy to 50 on a Kinetic/Electric Defender. I really never was happy with him though, since the main thing I wanted to do with him was play the role of sapper. There were a lot of tools to be had, but none that could maintain the lack of endurance and while I could sap one thing really well, there was nothing like an aura to help maintain the effect for groups. That got me into more trouble than not most times (fitting his name at any rate). After Electric Control came out, I moved the original to another server and remade him. He now does everything I wanted him to do originally, with the added bonus of having semi-permanent mez protection (due to Indomitable Will- working on making that perma but man it's tough!) If you play it like I do, Cardio is a must on the Alpha slot LOL.

Anyway, I love the play of ImpulseIV, but I think for pure feel of Super Speed, Living Lightspeed probably feels the most 'fast', and Solarstream is just a fun straightforward super speeder type character. Auras and Sprint powers help make these guys feel even faster, and don't underestimate costume design/colors when you want something to feel 'faster' (wish winged boots still had the option for the full body aura it used to have).

Hope these help!

I couldn't agree more.

Can't make a Flight specific or speed specific characters.

NO, because we need more weapon sets.

Next is pole arms/stick fighting.

Then Tri-Blades, because Dual Blades, Axe, Katana and Broadsword aren't enough.
Oh, and crossbows, Single Pistol, Sock-With-A-Billiard-Ball.

The bottom line is there's still some weapons that aren't in this game that every other fantasy or sci-fi MMO already does, so that means we HAVE to cram them in here.

Screw super powers. What do they have to do with super heroes anyways? Besides, it's not like the speedster is a cornerstone archetype in the genre or anything.

Uh...weren't the last few added powersets Electric Control, Kinetic Melee, Demon Summoning, and Dual Pistols, only one of which was a weapon set, and that weapon set a modern one at that? So huh?

Just ignore Johnny; he'll be dissatisfied with the state of the game even when they give him GM privileges and affix the title "King of CoX" to his characters.

My superspeed character is an elec/SR stalker (for the "so fast you can't see me" effect). Worked fairly well.

Me, too. Super Speed Melee FTW!

I'm not going to lie, I would roll Quarterstaff/SR in a heartbeat, but IMHO there's more than enough weapon sets in the game already. It's getting a bit too EverQuest in here, but there's room for polearms and Super Speed Melee in this game. CoH is just awesome like that.

Just a few ideas for an actual speed melee set:

---

Tier 1: Rapid Jabs
In the blink of an eye, you unleash several punches and pummel your enemy. Your movement is so fast it may disorient the enemy.
Damage: Minor, Recharge: Very Fast (DoT, Smash, Chance for Stun)
6 ticks of X smashing damage over 1 second

Tier 6: Natural Speed
You can accelerate your body for brief periods of time, allowing your attacks to recharge faster.
30% Recharge bonus for 60 seconds, recharge 180 seconds

Tier 7: After Images
You can piston your arm so fast it will create temporal after images. This punch is so fast it can actually occur multiple times in one plane of reality.
Damage: Superior (DoT), Recharge: Long, (Smash/Stun)
3 ticks of XX smashing damage over 2 seconds

Tier 9: Momentum Transfer
The Earth is rotating at over one thousand miles per hour. By using your abilities to transfer all of your foe's momentum into the earth, you remove them from Earth's own rotation, causing them to be crushed by speed and thrown into turmoil.
Damage: Extreme, Recharge: Long, (Smash, Lethal, 100% chance for mag 14 knockback)

Sound interesting?

The Speed power pool isn't fast enough?

The Speed power pool consists of a travel power that has little use in combat (other than as a poor man's stealth) and two powers that are generally agreed to be the most useless in the game. Plus Hasten. If you're trying to create a speedster, that's pretty thin beer.

It's arguable that making those powers not suck would be a good middle ground for us to get Speedster powers. I certainly wouldn't mind dipping into Flurry and Whirlwind or whatever it's called with my Kinetic Melee speedster themed character to round him off.

Not sure what would be good to fix them. Make Whirlwind knockup instead of back and make Flurry more like Sands of Mu with a stronger disorient chance and a -to hit debuff since the victim is dazed from the fast as hell hands smacking them in the face? :P That debuff could apply to Whirlwind as well.

Bah. I was coming to this thread to post about my Ill/Kin Controller who works through the concept of afterimages. I am really surprised that someone else came up with that.

Hence his ironic tirade.

I'd like a Speedster melee set. What would be cool is we could also get a regular-speed melee set based on the same powers and finally get our Street Fighter/Bar Brawler AT.

I can actually hear the jackhammer fist blows of a speedster in my head with mutliple superfast hits followed by a finisher: brrumbrrumbrrumbrrumbrrumbrrum-Kapow!

My speedster is katana/regen, with the speed power pool. He runs quickly, swings a sword quickly (well, faster than a broadsword anyhow) and he heals quickly.

/shrug. Works for me.
